US SHRIMP IMPORTS CRASH; INDIAN OUTPUT TO FALL

upend the global seafood

trade, reducing

foodservice demand and

complicating supply

chains....

The US imported 37,961 metric tons of shrimp worth $319 million in May,
29% less volume and 28% less value than imported in May 2019. That’s
also well below the 51,733t worth $439.4m imported just one month
before, in April 2020. In fact, the volume...

In fact, the volume was so low that it set a seven-year record, plummeting
almost to the 33,940t of shrimp worth $321.6m imported by the US in
June 2013. ...

Meanwhile, observers of the Indian shrimp industry said that although
shrimp stocking has resumed over the past month, the country can
expect a drop in production volume by 20-30% in 2020 amid the COVID-
19 pandemic....

ECUADOR, CHINA SIGN AGREEMENT ON BIOSECURITY IN

SHRIMP FARMING... By Undercurrent News July 1, 2020...

On June 18, the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (YSFRI) and
the National Chamber of Aquaculture of Ecuador (CNA) signed a
cooperation agreement to improve shrimp farming through the
implementation of new biosecurity measures...

The YSFRI is the World Organization for Animal Health's reference
laboratory for white spot syndrome virus and infectious hypodermic and
hematopoietic necrosis virus....

The company announced that it has made progress in areas of
animal welfare, environmental footprint reduction, and packaging
management, the company has also worked at new packaging for
aquaculture products to reduce its environmental impact.
Those improvements include reducing
single-use plastic bag consumption by
switching to different transfer methods.
For shrimp larvae, instead of plastic bags,
the company is using a “Q-Pass Tank” as
transport.
“It is expected that this initiative will help
reduce 5 million pieces of plastic waste a
year.
The company made pledge to reduce
packaging in 2018 to reduce the amount
of plastic in its packaging, aiming for 100
percent reusable, recyclable, or
compostable packaging by 2025.
