A VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this afternoon for our game against Normanton Knights in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two. We welcome the players, supporters and committee of the Knights to Woolston and hope that they have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality today. We have been in decent form over the past five weeks, winning four out of five games to put us into third place; albeit Shaw Cross have two games in hand, but if we can continue in the same vein over the next month or so then we have a great chance of being in the promotion mix. It won’t be easy as we have some tough games but if we play as we have been doing then anything is possible. One of those difficult fixtures will be today against Normanton Knights; we have had some hard fought games with them over the past few years and I am sure that today will be no different. They come into this game on a fine run of form themselves; they are unbeaten in their last four games, winning three and drawing last weekend at home to Barrow Island. They are closing in on a play off place so it sets the game up to be a very exciting encounter. Our NWML side have been decimated of late with injuries, holidays and call ups to the NCL side but have rallied together to get out on the field over the past couple of weeks. The results haven’t gone our way but the effort and enthusiasm cannot be faulted. They have played the top two teams in the division and had long spells where they were in the games but were unable to sustain this for long enough periods to claim the points. It was great to see a few ex-players of yesteryear dusting the dust off their boots and answering the call to help us out; it really is greatly appreciated. Tomorrow (Sunday) our Junior Section are holding a SUPER SUNDAY with plenty of matches taking place as well as stalls. It will be a great day so please come along and give them your support; there is a poster in today’s programme. Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!! Dave Whalley Public Relations Officer

WOOLSTON ROVERS 13 DEWSBURY CELTIC 12 IMPACT PERFORMANCE NCL – DIVISION TWO – 15/07/2023 Woolston Rovers snatched victory over Dewsbury Celtic with a late drop goal in an absorbing Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two game at The Limestone Construction Field, Monk Sports Club to make it three wins in succession and keep the pressure on the top three. A nip and tuck opening to the game saw both sides defences cancelling each other out but just before the midway point of the half Rovers broke the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty deep in the Celtic half and after loose forward Harry Files was held just short hooker Adam Files forced his way over under the posts from dummy half. Scrum half Dec Leonard converted but then just after the half hour Rovers had Matt Taylor sin binned for throwing the ball away and from the resulting penalty Celtic stand off Harry Copley found full back Oliver Thornton and he ducked under an attempted tackle to score wide out on the left. Copley added the conversion to level matters. A minute before the break Celtic made the extra man count once again when Copley chipped the ball behind the Rovers defensive line and centre Jack Kelly managed to get to the ball first and flip it back to second row Tom Bottomley who scored at the left of the posts. Copley converted to give his side a 12-6 half time lead. Five minutes into the second half, and with Rovers back to a fully complement of players, H Files kept the ball alive and slipped it to substitute Sean Boyle and his pass found prop forward Ryan Palin at speed to score at the side of the posts. Leonard converted to tie the scores once again. As the game entered the closing moments Rovers managed to take a bit of control territorially and with two minutes remaining Leonard coolly slotted over a drop goal that gave the home side a very hard fought 13-12 victory in a game that was a credit to the NCL. Woolston Rovers ‘A’ put in a very spirited display before going down to a defeat against high flying Burtonwood Bridge in the NWML Division Two at The Limestone Construction Field, Monk Sports Club. A much-changed Rovers side, due to injuries and NCL team call ups, saw several players put their hand up to come out of long-time retirement and they certainly put in a brave performance against a very good Burtonwood side who showed why they are having such a strong season so far. Burtonwood opened the scoring in the eleventh minute when a high kick to the corner from scrum half Jos Blackburn-Woods was brilliantly caught and grounded in one movement by winger Tom Robinson to score in the left corner and then ten minutes later slick handling the width of the field saw the ball reach Robinson who scored wide out on the left. Scrum half Jos Blackburn-Woods added the conversion. Shortly afterwards back-to-back ‘six agains’ got Bridge deep into the rovers half and second row Steve Newton sliced through to score wide out on the right and then just after the half hour Blackburn-Woods made a break down the middle that split the Rovers defence and he found substitute Craig Stanton in support to score at the side of the posts. Blackburn-Woods added the conversion. Four minutes before the break a kick from Blackburn-Woods was collected by centre Kelvin Duffy and he scored on the left. Blackburn-Woods converted to give his side a commanding 26-0 half time lead. Burtonwood increased their lead twelve minutes into the second half when second row Tom Unsworth found substitute Ryan Peters and he put centre Olly Parr over for a try wide out on the right against his former club and then just before the hour Bridge created space on the left for Duffy to go over. Blackburn-Woods added the conversion. Rovers were rewarded for refusing to lie down when loose forward Alan Reddecliff stepped round three defenders and then managed to ground the ball on the left with four men in at- tendance and then Reddecliff made a fine forty metre break down the middle of the field and rounded the full back with ease to score under the posts. Substitute Graham Smith added the conversion. Three minutes before the end Burtonwood scored their final try when from a scrum the ball reached Duffy who raced over in the left corner to complete his hat trick in the left corner to give the visitors a 40-10 win. Woolston Rovers bounced back from two successive defeats to return to winning ways with a very comfortable victory over Heworth in the Hatton’s Solicitors National Conference League Division Three on Saturday afternoon at Monks Sports Club. The home side opened the scoring after eighteen minutes when they decided to run the ball on the last tackle and scrum half Daniel O’Brien found loose forward Chris Mellor and he managed to return the ball to O’Brien who scored at the left of the posts. O’Brien converted himself and then three minutes later hooker Ben Moores broke from dummy half and found second row Scott Davidson running strong to break through the line and find full back Eddie Vaughan in support to score under the posts. O’Brien landed the conversion. Rovers next try soon followed when they were awarded a penalty on the Heworth line and centre Graham Healey, returning to the side after a five month absence, took a quick tap and went on his own to score wide out on the right. O’Brien tagged on the goal points and then just after the half hour mark a superb forty metre break down the middle by Moores split the Heworth defence and he put Vaughan over under the posts. O’Brien added the simple conversion. Two minutes before the break Rovers swung the ball along the line straight from a scrum on the Heworth twenty metre line and Vaughan put winger James Rosson over in the left corner; O’Brien landed a superb conversion and then right on the stroke of half time Moores picked up a loose ball on the halfway line and broke clear before finding Vaughan who went over at the side of the posts to complete his hat trick. O’Brien converted to make the half time score 36-0. The heavens opened at the start of the second half and this made handling very difficult which kept scoring chances down to a minimum but just after the hour mark Moores kicked down field straight from a scrum on the halfway line and Vaughan won the chase to collect and go over for his fourth try. O’Brien added the conversion and then nine minutes from time a chip ahead from O’Brien saw Rosson outpace his opposite number to collect the ball and offload to second row James Dudley who scored wide out on the left to complete a very pleasing 46-0 victory for the Rovers. The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers full back Eddie Vaughan. He was very well supported by prop forward Wez Lawton, hooker Ben Moores and debutant stand off Ian Marshall. After the game Rovers Head Coach Mike Grady said, “I thought that we were outstanding as a team today in very difficult conditions. It is a fantastic achievement to keep any team scoreless and I was proud of all my players today. We again had to make a few changes due to injuries and player unavailability so it’s pleasing to get such a convincing win. We brought in three players to make their debuts for the club and they didn’t look out of place and we also had Johnny Wilson making his first appearance in the first team this season and he added strength and a physical presence to our pack when he was on the field.” ROVERS Eddie Vaughan, James Rosson, Tom Keevil, Graham Healey, Christian Taylor, Ian Marshall, Daniel O’Brien, Andy Addison, Ben Moores, Wez Lawton, James Dudley, Scott Davidson, Chris Mellor. Subs: Josh Ward, Anthony Tilley, Johnny Wilson, Mike Leicester.
