I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this afternoon for our game against Saddleworth Rangers in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two. A VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE We welcome the players, supporters and committee of Saddleworth to Woolston and hope that they have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality today. Due to the weather putting paid to our game against Dewsbury Moor Maroons and no fixture last weekend it has been three weeks since our last outing and that was a disappointing defeat at Myton Warriors, that made it three reverses on the bounce so we are in need of bouncing back to winning ways as soon as possible and hopefully from a Woolston point of view that can happen this afternoon. We know that it won’t be easy as games between ourselves and Saddleworth over many years have always been tight affairs, none more so than in our game at Saddleworth in April that saw us claim a narrow 18-12 victory. Our NWML side have also not been in action over the past couple of weeks; their scheduled game at Rochdale Mayfield ‘A’ was awarded to them as Mayfield couldn’t raise a side. Today they are at Newton Storm, and they will be looking to claim a win that will see them move up the table. Our very first Beer Festival opened last night and continues this afternoon. We have 15 different beers available, all sponsored by local companies which is fantastic. We also have Millstone Durbax as the event sponsor and we thank them for their support of the Festival along with our principal Open Age sponsor LNH Transport. Massive thanks to committee members Liam Horrigan and Mark Brookhouse for their tireless work in turning this idea into reality along with John Wilkinson and Jordan Millington at 4Ts brewery, who have set up the room superbly with all of the required equipment. There is also a Past Players Re-union today, as well as the marking of the 20th Anniversary of Warrington Woolston Rovers winning the inaugural National League Three Grand Final with a 42-6 victory over Teesside Steelers at Winnington Park Rugby Union Club. The match report from that game is in today’s programme. We welcome all of our past players, coaches, committee members and supporters and hope you are having a great afternoon. Also, in the programme you can find the fixtures for our Junior teams who play tomorrow. We have plenty of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks so if you have a spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show them your support. Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!! Dave Whalley Public Relations Officer

WOOLSTON ROVERS 22 WIGAN ST JUDES 34 IMPACT PERFORMANCE NCL DIVISION TWO - 03/06/2023 Woolston Rovers turned in their worst display of the season as they suffered a disappointing home defeat to a very enthusiastic Wigan St Judes side in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two at The Limestone Construction Field, Monk Sports Club. St Judes opened the scoring in the second minute when a kick from Rovers went out on the full and that gave them great field position that saw full back Connor Parkinson link into the line and create an overlap for centre Reece Matthews to score wide out on the right and then four minutes later a penalty for a late tackle on the kicker paid off for St Judes as Matthews got his hands free to slip the ball to C Parkinson who scored under the posts. Scrum half Dec Parkinson added the conversion. Rovers got off the mark on twelve minutes when a pinpoint kick into the in-goal area by scrum half Dec Leonard saw centre Ben Dixon react quickest to collect and score under the posts. Dixon converted his own try but then midway through the half another Rovers error close to their own line proved costly as D Parkinson forced his way over on the left. Almost immediately Rovers responded when substitute Sam Wood was held just short and hooker Adam Files went from dummy half and powered over at the side of the posts. Dixon converted and then thirteen minutes before the break a kick into the in-goal area on the second tackle caught St Judes off guard and Dixon pounced to collect and score on the left and give Rovers a slender 16-14 half time advantage. Four minutes into the second half St Judes winger Lewis Melling intercepted a Rovers pass and raced eighty five metres to score under the posts. D Parkinson converted and four minutes later second row Dave Fagan stepped round the Rovers defence and raced clear to score a superb solo try on the left. The visitors were now playing with extreme confidence and a superb ball from D Parkinson found brother C Parkinson at speed and he shot through a gap and raced forty metres to score on the right and then they made the game safe when Fagan broke through down the middle and scored under the posts. Hooker Danny Fallon added the conversion. Rovers claimed a consolation try five minutes from time when full back Theo Holt kept the ball alive on the last tackle and found prop forward Ryan Hickman who used his strength to score wide out on the right. Leonard converted but it was too little too late as St Judes claimed a deserved 34-22 win. Best for Rovers, on a day to forget, were loose forward Harry Files, prop forward Ryan Palin and centre Kieran Moore. ROVERS Theo Holt, Tom Byrne, Kieran Moore, Ben Dixon, Alex Pendlebury, Ryan Brown, Dec Leonard, Ryan Palin, Adam Files, Ryan Hickman, Sam Vernon, Scott Whiteley, Harry Files. Subs: Craig Lawton, Sam Wood, Joe Craven, Blake Turner. Tries Dixon (12 mins, 27), A Files (24), Hickman (75). Goals Dixon 2 Leonard 1

Woolston Rovers suffered their third defeat on the bounce as a poor display saw them well beaten at Myton Warriors in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two on Saturday afternoon. Myton opened the scoring after five minutes with a try from stand off Nathan Slater. Scrum half Kris Walker converted but the rovers response was immediate as second row Dan Fearnley crossed for a try. Scrum half Dec Leonard added the conversion. The home side were back in front when winger Lee James scored in the corner but then a minute before the break Rovers full back Joe Roper went over for a debut try following his transfer from Crosfields. Leonard added the conversion to give his side a narrow 12-10 interval advantage. Two minutes into the second half James put Myton back in front and that was soon followed by another try for Slater; K Walker converted on both occasions and then just after the hour mark centre Ryan Walker crossed for a try to put the game out of Rovers reach. K Walker added the conversion. Rovers were temporarily reduced to twelve men with the sin binning of Fearnley for dissent with eleven minutes remaining and Myton took full advantage of the extra man immediately as James went over for his hat trick try. K Walker converted and then further tries in the last five minutes from winger Tyler Fisher and K Walker, both goaled by K Walker gave the Humbersiders a 46-12 win. Best for Rovers were centre Ben Dixon, second row Sam Vernon and prop forward Harry Files. ROVERS Joe Roper, Alex Pendlebury, Tom Byrne, Ben Dixon, Karlton Bates, Theo Holt, Dec Leonard, Harry Files, Adam Files, Ryan Hickman, Sam Vernon, Dan Fearnley, Scott Whiteley. Woolston Rovers ‘A’ put in a very spirited display before going down to a defeat at league leaders Burtonwood Bridge in the NWML Division Two at Fir Tree Lane on Saturday afternoon. This was a late ‘reverse’ of the fixture due to Rovers ground being unfit due to the recent scorching weather. Rovers started brightly and deservedly opened the scoring after eleven minutes with a try from prop forward Ryan Palin. Stand off Craig Lawton converted and that is the way the scoreline stayed until just before the half hour mark when Bridge centre Andrew Nisbet crossed for a try wide out on the right. Eight minutes before the break Burtonwood went in front with a try from second row Steve Newton. Scrum half Jos Blackburn-Woods converted to give the home side a narrow 10-6 half time advantage. Six minutes into the second half Bridge full back Ross Young scored under the posts. Blackburn-Woods converted and then four minutes later second row Craig Stanton went over under the posts. Blackburn-Woods added the conversion. Burtonwood moved further clear on the hour with a try at the side of the posts from substitute Tom Robinson. Blackburn-Woods goaled but then seven minutes later Rovers were rewarded for their continual probing when a great long ball from full back Ben Roberts sent centre Craig Woolvine racing through a gap to score wide out on the right. Scrum half Jay-Jay Catterall added the conversion. Burtonwood had the last say four minutes from time when winger Kelvin Duffy squeezed over in the right corner to make the final score 32-12 to the Bridge. Best for Rovers were prop forward Ryan Palin, centre Craig Woolvine and loose forward Sam Wood. ROVERS Ben Roberts, Louis Griffiths, Craig Woolvine, Kyle Cherrett, Joe Oakes, Craig Lawton, Jay-Jay Catterall, Ryan Palin, Jack Hancock, Andy Addison, Tom Fagan, Cameron Davies, Sam Wood. Warrington Woolston Rovers were crowned the inaugural National League Three Champions when they recorded a magnificent victory over Teesside Steelers in the Grand Final in front of a large crowd at Winnington Park Rugby Union Club. Warrington Woolston Rovers were in control of proceedings from start to finish and a combination of superb attacking play and awesome defence ensured that there was only ever going to be one winner. The victory capped a unique double for Rovers as they were also the first National Conference League Premier Division winners 10 years previous (93/94 season). Rovers took the lead on two minutes when Karl Taylor touched down following strong runs by prop forwards Dave Powlesland and Matt Patterson. Full back Mark Wallington darted over out wide for Rovers five minutes later and further tries were added from centre Jon Cole and loose forward Dave Kelly. Second row Chris Mellor added three conversions to give Rovers a commanding 22-0 half time advantage. Rovers stretched their lead when Cole crossed for his second try, goaled by Mellor but then Teesside were rewarded for never giving up when Dave Norman scored a try that Phil Gowing converted. Any hopes of an unlikely Steelers comeback were quickly dispelled as two quick tries from scrum half Liam McCarthy, one converted by Mellor, put Rovers out of sight before Taylor added a second of his own late on to crown an excellent 42-6 victory. The David Oxley Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Rovers scrum half Liam McCarthy and he was ably supported by winger Karl Taylor, full back Mark Wallington and substitute Lee Rushton. ROVERS Mark Wallington; Paul Berry, Iain Fowler, Jon Cole, Karl Taylor; Liam Horrigan, Liam McCarthy; Dave Powlesland, Craig Harris, Matt Patterson, Dave Patterson, Chris Mellor, Dave Kelly. Woolston Rovers are extremely delighted and proud to see four of their Under 14s Greens side sign Scholarship contracts at Warrington Wolves. Oliver Caddick, Reece Dobbs, Freddie Hartill and Patrick Shephard were all introduced to the crowd at the Warrington Wolves v Leeds Rhinos Betfred Super League game at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday evening. Rovers Junior Chair Mark Robinson, who has also been their coach throughout their Rovers career said, “We as a club are extremely proud of Fred, Reece, Oliver and Patrick for achieving their goals and gaining a scholarship with Warrington Wolves. We know they have worked really hard to get on to the first step of the ladder and it is down to them now to keep working hard to climb through the ranks and work their way to the top.” Robinson added, “Being their coach has been, and still is, a pleasure. These four players and the rest of the lads are humble, hardworking and respectful and that goes along way into making them good rugby players. We are also very proud that Oliver and Reece have been part of the team from day one as Under 7s, with Fred joining at the age of 8 and Patrick when he was 9. I am excited to see how their future goes in the game. They must remember to work hard and play the game with real intensity and integrity; I have every confidence that they will be a great success.” ROVERS AWESOME FOURSOME SIGN WIRE SCHOLARSHIP CONTRACTS

R.I.P. FREDDIE WALLINGTON Woolston Rovers Rugby League Club were saddened to hear of the sad passing of former player Freddie Wallington at the weekend following a short illness. Freddie was a top class player for Rovers in the 1970s having joined from local rivals Crosfields; he quickly settled in and would become a very influential player for several years, equally at home in the centre or at stand off. Current Rovers Club President and Interim Chairman Warren Whalley, who played alongside Freddie during his time at the club, said, “Freddie was a real character and a very popular member of the side. His skill out on the field helped us to win numerous games. Off the field he had a brilliant sense of humour, but above all else he was a great bloke and he will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of calling him a friend. His son Mark used to come along to training with him when he was a youngster, and he then went on to follow in his dad’s footsteps and have a successful Rovers career.” The thoughts and prayers from all at the club are with Freddie’s son Mark, daughter Louise and the rest of his family. R.I.P. Freddie
