A VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this afternoon for our game Wigan St Judes in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two Play Off Semi Final. We welcome the players, supporters and committee of St Judes to Woolston and hope that they have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality today. Today’s game pits fourth v fifth in sudden death knock out rugby; with so much at stake it is bound to be a tense match with both sides desperate to keep their promotion dream alive. St Judes have had a strong finish to the season that has seen them climb several places over the past few weeks to claim a play off place and they will come here with plenty of confidence having already completed a league ‘double’ over us, but I know that our lads are ready to put in a big performance this afternoon and hopefully make it through to another Play Off Final. The other Semi Final will not take place until next weekend due to Saddleworth facing Myton Warriors in a league game that was postponed early in the season. When this fixture was rearranged Saddleworth did not look as though they would be in the top six but a fine run of form has got them into seventh place, level on points with Dews- bury Celtic, but with an inferior points difference. However, if they were to avoid defeat against Myton then they would leapfrog Celtic and then travel to Shaw Cross next weekend. This means that the Play Off Final will take place in two weeks time. If Shaw Cross win then they will be at home, but if either Dewsbury Celtic or Saddleworth are victorious then the winners of today’s game will host the Final. Today we also welcome our Past Players, Coaches, Committee Members and Supporters down to the club and we hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon. We are always grateful to see them and have a catch up over a beer or two. Our Open Age Presentation Evening takes place on Saturday 7th October at Monks’ commencing at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend what promises to be an enjoyable evening. Also, in the programme you can find the fixtures for our Junior teams who play tomorrow. We have plenty of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks so if you have a spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show them your support. Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!! Dave Whalley Public Relations Officer

Woolston Rovers ended their regular league season with a home defeat to Shaw Cross Sharks in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two at The Limestone Construction Field, Monk Sports Club on Saturday afternoon. Rovers opened the scoring after thirteen minutes when second row Ryan Hickman crossed for an excellent try. Stand off Craig Lawton converted but then twelve minutes later Shaw Cross opened their account when quick hands the width of the field created an overlap for winger Jamaine Akaidere to score in the left corner. Right on the stroke of half time more fine handling by the Sharks close to the line saw Akaidere score in the left corner to give his side a slender 8-6 half time lead. A minute into the second half Rovers lost the ball on their own thirty metre line and Shaw Cross scrum half Tommy Milburn pounced on the loose ball to race away and score on the right. Substitute Dec Tomlinson converted but then a spiral kick from the restart by Rovers scrum half Dec Leonard was collected superbly by winger Alex Pendlebury and that paved the way for prop forward Ryan Palin to twist in the tackle and score wide out on the left. Just before the hour a high kick from the Sharks was fumbled by Rovers and second row Jack Toulson and he put loose forward Matthew West over on the left. Tomlinson converted and then thirteen minutes later Tomlinson bounced off an attempted tackle to score at the right of the posts. Rovers gave themselves a glimmer of hope when an offload from prop forward Harry Files found hooker and brother Adam Files who burrowed over on the left. Lawton converted but then a minute from time the Sharks scored their sixth try of the afternoon when substitute Tenneson Neagle found stand off Evan Stephenson who scored on the left. Tomlinson converted to round off a 30-16 win for Shaw Cross. Best for Rovers were winger Alex Pendlebury, centre Cameron Davies and second row Dan Fearnley. ROVERS James Tarpey, Alex Pendlebury, Sam Vernon, Cameron Davies, Simon Bishop, Craig Lawton, Dec Leonard, Ryan Palin, Adam Files, Harry Files, Dan Fearnley, Ryan Hickman, Ryan Brown. Subs: Kyle Cherrett, Wez Lawton, Ben Crewe, Billy Sheen. Tries Hickman (13 mins). Palin (43), A Files (70). Woolston Rovers produced a stunning display to claim a thrilling one point victory over Hunslet Club Parkside in the Kingstone Press National Conference League Division Three at The Sadore Construction Field, Monks Sports Club to end the 100% record of the runaway league leaders. Rovers opened the scoring on sixteen minutes with a penalty goal from winger Chris Twigg but Hunslet replied almost immediately when second row Mark Stubley crossed for a try to put his side ahead for the first time before Rovers once again hit the front with a try from scrum half Billy Maunder that was converted by Twigg. Hunslet had Stubley sin binned on the half hour for holding down and Rovers made the extra man pay as centre Justin Becker scored to give his side a 12-4 interval advantage. Three minutes into the second half rovers moved further ahead with a try from full back Wil Maudsley but Hunslet came back strongly with tries from full back Luke O’Malley and winger Craig McShane that were both converted by prop forward Jamie Fields to level matters at 16-16. The visitors nudged a point ahead with a Fields drop goal but Rovers refused to lie down and hit back with a try from second row Sean Conway. Twigg converted to give Rovers a five point cushion but then with two minutes remaining Parkside winger Luke Medley scored wide out. Crucially the conversion attempt by Fields was off target and Rovers were left to celebrate a magnificent 22-21 win. The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers seconds row Sean Conway. He was well supported by prop forward Harry Files, hooker Ryan Brown and second row Anthony Clayton.
