A VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this afternoon for our game against Dewsbury Moor Maroons in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two. We welcome the players, supporters and committee of the Maroons to Woolston and hope that they have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality today. Today’s game was originally scheduled for June but due to the extremely warm weather we experienced then the pitch was unplayable and so had to be rearranged, hence the game being played this afternoon. Dewsbury Moor are having an excellent season and currently lie in second place in the league table, three points ahead of their near rivals Shaw Cross Sharks, although the Sharks do have two games in hand. It promises to be a real fight between those two sides for the second automatic promotion place along with Waterhead Warriors who only require one win from their remaining four games to be crowned Champions. Rovers were right in the mix for automatic promotion but unfortunately defeats in our last two fixtures have put paid to that hope, but we will be going all out to finish the regular season on a high and if we can remain in our current fourth place position it will give us a home tie in the Play Off Semi Final and then we will have a good as chance as any of claiming that third promotion place. We have had to take the very difficult decision to withdraw our NWML side from their league due to a catastrophic injury list across our Open Age that has resulted in many of the regular NWML lads stepping up into the NCL and certainly not looking out of place; it is a decision that we did not take lightly and was very much a last resort. Hopefully we will be able to arrange a couple of Merit League games before the end of the season and then regroup over the winter and hopefully return next season. Our Junior Section are currently on a summer break and they will return to action next weekend. If you can come down on a Sunday morning to see our future stars play then it would be a massive boost for them. Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!! Dave Whalley Public Relations Officer

WOOLSTON ROVERS 12 NORMANTON KNIGHTS 13 IMPACT PERFORMANCE NCL – DIVISION TWO – 05/08/2023 Woolston Rovers suffered late heartbreak as they narrowly fell to defeat at home to Normanton Knights in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two at The Limestone Construction Field, Monk Sports Club. In a very nip and tuck first half both sides defences were on top meaning that chances were at a premium but then five minutes before the break Rovers centre Cameron Davies was sin binned for a swinging arm whilst Knights full back Connor Wilson was also yellow carded for reacting; the penalty was awarded to Rovers and from that stand off Craig Lawton found second row Dan Fearnley who managed to twist in the tackle and force his way over on the right from close range. Lawton converted to give his side a 6-0 half time lead. Eleven minutes into the second half Normanton prop forward Stuart Biscomb powered over from close range. Stand off Jacob Crossland converted and then just after the hour he landed a drop gaol to put the visitors ahead but almost immediately Rovers moved down field and the ball reached centre Sam Vernon who broke through to score on the right. Lawton added the conversion. With three minutes remaining of normal time Normanton scrum half Keiran Hinchliffe caught the Rovers defence in two minds and shot through a gap to score at the left of the posts. Crossland converted but then eight minutes into injury time Rovers were awarded a penalty wide out on the left; several Knights players took issue with the decision and it resulted in prop forward Adam Biscomb, Wilson and winger Charlie Barber being dismissed by the referee. Woolston Rovers produced a below par display as they went down to defeat at Wigan St Judes in the Impact Performance National Conference League Division Two on Saturday afternoon. After a tight opening, with both sides defences on top, St Judes were first on the scoreboard just before the midway point of the first half with a try from full back Connor Parkinson and then eight minutes later they increased their lead when second row Joey Brady scored. Scrum half Danny Cassidy added the conversion to give his side a 10-0 advantage which is the way it remained at half time. Three minutes into the second half St Judes substitute Aaron Smith scored a try; Cassidy converted and then ten minutes later Brady went over for his second try of the game. Cassidy added the conversion. Just before the hour mark Rovers had scrum half Joe Roper sin binned for dissent but almost immediately Rovers got their first try when second row Dan Fearnley scored and they belied the numerical disadvantage four minutes later with a try from winger Karlton Bates. Stand off Craig Lawton added the conversion. Rovers then had loose forward Ryan Brown sent off for an allegedly kicking out whilst St Judes loose forward was also dismissed for throwing a punch and then in the very last minute of the game Cassidy scored for St Judes. He added the conversion himself to round off a deserved 28-10 win for the home side. Best for Rovers were centre Kieran Moore, prop forward Ryan Hickman, second row Dan Fearnley and prop forward Harry Files. Woolston Rovers were crowned Carlsberg Warrington Cup Winners following an impres- sive victory over Culcheth Eagles in an excellent final that took place at Rylands’ Gorsey Lane ground. Both sides contributed superbly to a great spectacle but it was the extra class that the Rovers had in their armoury that saw them record a comfortable win against a gallant Eagles side. Rovers opened the scoring in the fourth minute when a kick by centre Mike Stout was fumbled by Culcheth and winger Tom Keevil pounced on the loose ball and went over in the left corner for an unconverted try and four minutes later Rovers ran the ball on the last tackle and it reached hooker Scott Whiteley who scored at the side of the posts. Scrum half Daniel O’Brien added the conversion. On thirteen minutes Rovers stretched their advantage when some lovely handling saw the ball reach full back Will Chadwick and he managed to find centre Ryan Jones who scored in the right hand corner but then just before the half hour mark pressure on the Rovers line by Culcheth was rewarded when loose forward Ross Pendlebury forced his way over wide out on the left. The Rovers regained control three minutes before the break when good work by second row Sean Conway stretched the Eagles defence and he fed Chadwick who sent out a beautiful long pass to winger Christian Taylor who scored in the right corner and then right on the stroke of half time quick hands out wide by Rovers paved the way for loose forward Chris Mellor to score in the right corner and give his side a deserved 22-4 interval advantage. Thirteen minutes into the second half a handling error by Culcheth gave Rovers a ‘free play’ and that enabled them to move close to the Eagles line and a quick play the ball enabled second row Paul Alcock to score wide out on the left. O’Brien landed the conver- sion and then ten minutes later Rovers stand off Billy Maunder found Alcock who dum- mied his way back inside and found Whiteley who scored on the right. O’Brien tagged on the extras. Ten minutes from time Culcheth grabbed a consolation try when hooker Adam Rainford scored in the left corner. Winger Chris Pleavin added a fine conversion from the touchline but it was too little too late as Rovers celebrated a fine 34-10 success. The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers full back Will Chadwick. He was very well supported by prop forward Wez Lawton, hooker Scott Whiteley and loose forward Chris Mellor. After the game Rovers Head Coach Mike Grady said, “We are absolutely delighted to have won the trophy. We knew that we would have to perform well to get the win and we certainly did that. I thought our composure in both attack and defence was really good and that set the platform for what turned out to be a comfortable victory. All seventeen players deserve great credit for the way they played; they all stuck to the gameplan and got their just rewards in the end. Culcheth certainly played their part in what was a good game played in a very sporting manner.” Coach Chris Ball added, “It was really pleasing to be involved in such a good all-round team effort. We started off at a very high intensity and that enabled us to build a healthy lead early on and the way we then controlled the rest of the game meant that Culcheth were restricted to very few chances. I am so happy for everybody involved at the club. Hopefully both of our teams can now look forward to a successful end to the season and then we can kick on even further next year.” ROVERS Will Chadwick, Tom Keevil, Mike Stout, Ryan Jones, Christian Taylor, Billy Maunder, Daniel O’Brien, Andy Addison, Scott Whiteley, Wez Lawton, Paul Alcock, Sean Conway, Chris Mellor. Subs: Martin Ball, Ryan Cosgrove, James Dudley, Johnny Wilson.
