CHAPTER V
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations
of the study. Findings serve as a basis in designing a development plan that could improve
the environmental awareness of students through the different environmental programs of
the schools.
Summary of Findings

The purpose of the study was to measure the level of awareness of the students as
stewards of the environment to propose a development plan that may solve the different
environmental problems the society is facing today.

The following are the summary of findings of the study based on the questions:
1. How may the students’ level of awareness regarding the environment be

described in terms of:
The level of students’ awareness regarding the environment is described in

terms of:
1.1 Waste Management

The students’ level of awareness of waste management was described as
“aware” and this means that the students have a fair knowledge of the different
ways to achieve waste minimization goals.

113

1.2 Clean and Green Drive
The students’ level of awareness on the clean and green drive was described as
“aware”. As reflected on the result, the students have a fair knowledge about
the ways of practicing clean and green drive.

1.3 Water Pollution
The students’ level of awareness of water pollution was described as “aware”.
As reflected in the result, the students still have an information gap about the
ways of mitigating water pollution.

1.4 Air Pollution
The students’ level of awareness of air pollution was described as “extremely
aware”. From the descriptive interpretation, it can be concluded that the
students have a high level of awareness about air pollution and they are aware
that it is one of the widespread environmental issues the earth is facing now and
that its effects greatly affect the everyday welfare of the society.

1.5 Soil Pollution
The students’ level of awareness on soil pollution was described as “aware”.
This means that further educating the students about the aftermath of soil
pollution will give them an enhanced understanding of the particular
environmental issue.

114

2. How do students as stewards of the environment help the school in taking care
of their surroundings?
Qualitative findings based on the interview conducted with the informants
unveiled three themes about the students’ practices as stewards of the environment.
These are the zero waste program, CLAYGO, and Green, and save energy.

3. How does the school uplift the students’ consciousness of protecting the
environment?

The face-to-face interview with the informants revealed three themes
regarding the school’s ways of uplifting the students’ environmental awareness.
These are sustainability and environmental practices, environmental education, and
subject integration which are usually conducted inside and outside the classroom.
4. What challenges have been encountered by the school regarding the caring for
the school environment?

The challenges encountered by the school regarding the caring for the
school environment revealed four themes. These are lack of facilities, lack of
students’ discipline, overconsumption of plastics, and poor implementation of
environmental programs.

Conclusions

Raising the students’ consciousness in taking care of the environment would help
them to become good stewards of nature and create a brighter future for the next generation.
However, some challenges are inevitable which need to be addressed immediately by the
teachers and the whole institution for the success of the implementation of environmental
programs and to achieve sustainability.

115

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are
being offered:

1. Curriculum planners may use the findings of this study to enhance quality
education and assist schools with portfolio development and waste minimization
projects. The curriculum developers can come up with environmental programs
that would address proper taking care of the environment. This study may serve as
the basis for policy reforms to strengthen policies about the involvement of the
students in protecting the environment.

2. The government may utilize the recommendation of this study to help different
government agencies specifically DENR and DepEd to realize the value of waste
management in one community and design environmental programs that would
lessen waste production in the society through the support of the citizenry.

3. The school administration may use the findings of this study to properly address
environmental issues on campuses and their surroundings. Furthermore, this may
serve as a tool to raise awareness among other administrators to improve their
functions in carrying out environmental programs of the school. The findings may
also serve as a guide in the supervision of their duties to religiously practice the
mission and vision of their school.

4. Students’ awareness of the proper care of the environment may be raised through
the help of the findings of this study as it may enable them to perform their role in
nation-building and become more responsible stewards of nature in the long run.

116

5. Teachers may be encouraged to take part in the implementation of different
programs that would result in the sustainability of the environment. Out of the
findings of this study, the teachers may come up with strategies and classroom
activities that could contribute to the promotion of a healthy environment.

6. Parents may use the findings of the study to train their children how to be good
stewards of nature inside the school, at home, and in every place they go.

7. Academic researchers may conduct similar studies to enhance the environmental
programs of institutions and to address the different challenges faced by the
stakeholders during the implementation process. Besides, the theoretical insights
that may be derived from this study may serve as a springboard for further research
and investigation in crucial areas of addressing environmental issues.

Please rate each statement by checking the box that corresponds to your answer.

5 – Extremely Aware 3 – Moderately Aware 1 – Not Aware

4 –Aware 2 – Slightly Aware

1.1 Waste Management

1. Landfill, a waste disposal method of treatment for certain biodegradable 5 4 3 2 1
industrial wastes, is recommended by most environmentalists.

2. Recycling of waste is important for the protection of the environment
and conservation of natural resources

3. Waste segregation is important for a sustainable environment
4. Dumping sites become the breeding ground of insects and rats that can

cause diseases.

136

5. Dumping of garbage is considered to be one of the major environmental
problems in school even in the community.

6. Used papers in schools contribute much to solid waste.
7. Composting is a biochemical process in which organic materials such as

lawn clippings, kitchen scraps are decomposed to a rich-soil like
material.
8. The volume of waste could be reduced if the recycling method would be
adopted.
9. Plastics, straws, candy wrappers and others that contain organic chlorine
compound are considered to be potentially hazardous wastes which
contribute to pollution.
10. Republic Act 9003 also known as Ecological Solid Waste Management
Act pertains to garbage disposal, which prohibits littering in public
areas, hold institution to clean their surroundings and provide penalties
for the improper disposal of garbage and other forms of uncleanliness.

1.2 Clean and Green Drive

Collecting grass clippings and leaves and starting a compost pile as 54321

1. compost is an excellent conditioner for flower and vegetable gardens

and a beneficial way to dispose of yard waste.

2. The consequence of deforestation is global warming which causes

climate change.

3. Tree planting is one adaptive measure to prevent global warming.

4. Deforestation has adverse effects on the environment.

5. Deforestation occurs due to needing for land, trees, and other human

requirement.

6. Trees support the water cycle by returning water vapor into the

atmosphere.

7. Trees also play a critical role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that fuel

global warming.

8. Deforestation increases soil erosion.

9. Deforestation without sufficient reforestation has resulted in damage to

habitat, biodiversity loss, and aridity.

10. A green lifestyle is a solution for all environmental crises.

1.3.1 Water Pollution

1. Water scarcity is an abstract concept to some and a stark reality for 5 4 32 1

others.

2. Fresh water is an important natural resource necessary for the survival

of all ecosystems.

3. The present challenge is how to effectively conserve, manage, and

distribute the water we have.
4. The water resource is essential for livelihood and the environment’s

health

5. Collecting rainwater and saving it for cleaning toilets and watering

plants can help prevent water shortage

6. Pollution through human activities presents a problem for fresh water

resources.

7. Human and animal waste are considered the most serious health-related

water pollutants.

8. The bad taste of water indicates the presence of pollutants.

137

9. The underground water gets polluted through agricultural wastes like
pesticides and fertilizers.

10. The availability of fresh water is very less at the global level.

1.3.2 Air Pollution 5 4 32 1

1. Air pollution is a widespread problem now.
2. Self-discipline is the most effective way to reduce pollution problems.
3. The ozone layer is a concentration of ozone (O3) molecules in the

stratosphere.
4. Considering the problems of pollution and crowding, we need to

decrease the use of cars.
5. It is safer to stay indoors because of the many pollutants in the outside

air.
6. The ozone layer is a belt above Earth, serves as a shield from the

harmful ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun.
7. The burning of fossil fuels is one of the causes of air pollution.
8. Controlling air pollution depends upon the type of government and

individuals to make changes.
9. The problem of air pollution is directly related to the number of people

living in an area and the kinds of activities they engage in.
10. Smog leads to lung-related diseases.

1.3.3 Soil Pollution

1. Soil pollution occurs due to soil erosion, pesticides, and fertilizers. 5 4 32 1

2. Human activities are the primary cause of soil pollution and land

degradation.

3. Soil pollution poses a worrisome threat to agricultural productivity, food

safety, and human health.

4. Soil pollution can have several harmful effects on ecosystems, plants,

and animal health.

5. The main causes of soil pollution are industrial, agricultural activities,

waste disposal, and accidental oil spills.

6. Crops and plants are grown on polluted soil absorb much of the

pollution and then pass these to people.

7. The ecological balance of any system gets affected due to the

widespread contamination of the soil.

8. The toxic chemicals present in the soil can decrease soil fertility and

therefore decrease the soil yield.

9. Organic methods of farming should be supported and the use of

chemical pesticides and fertilizers should be banned.

10. The waste produced from nature itself such as dead plants, carcasses of

animals, and rotten fruits and vegetables only adds to the fertility of the

soil.
