INTRODUCTION
The Weight of Our Sky is a fictional story, but based on actual historical events that took place here in
Malaysia. The story is about Melati, a teenage girl who is unknowingly battling Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder (OCD), which she believes to be a Djinn living inside her mind in the 1960s when she is caught
in the middle of the 13th May racial riots in Kuala Lumpur (an actual event that happened in Malaysian
history).
To provide a little backstory, 13th May was a historic and notorious incident in Malaysian history that was
sparked by racial tensions between the Malays and the Chinese after the 1969 Malaysian General Election.
The ruling coalition, the Alliance, had lost the majority of parliamentary seats to the Chinese-majority
opposition party. With racial tensions at a high, the Chinese and Malay communities took matters into their
own hands and sparked clashing in the streets, causing days of death and destruction in the town of Kuala
Lumpur, which ended with an official total death toll of 196. It was extreme to the point that a National
Emergency had to be declared by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and a twenty-four hour curfew imposed on
the citizens.
Back to the story shortly, everything happened when a trip to the movies after school turns into a
nightmare when the city erupts into violent race riots between the Chinese and the Malay. When
gangsters come into the theatre and hold movie-goers hostage, Mel, a Malay, is saved by a Chinese
woman, but has to leave her best friend behind to die.
On their journey through town, Mel sees for herself the devastation caused by the riots. In her village,
a neighbour tells her that her mother, a nurse, was called in to help with the many bodies piling up at
the hospital. Mel must survive on her own, with the help of a few kind strangers, until she finds her
mother. But the djinn in her mind threatens her ability to cope. Helpless and surrounded by violence,
Melati has to overcome the merciless Djinn and find her way back to her mother in the midst of the
dangers of the riots.
THE ADVANTAGES OF THE BOOK.
The writer had mention clear information of cultural, mental health and religious belief. All of the cultural
references in this book will make Asian readers’ heart burst of happiness. Non-Asian readers mightnot
notice these references since they’re tiny and seems like just a random explanation. Details such as going
to market with your best friend after school and buying local snacks and ice-cold drinks because we’re
living in a tropical country and it’s burning hot during the day, visiting small shops just for the heck out of it
and not buying anything, Melati’s favourite food and drink, the mention of a woman devil who sucks blood,
and many more. All of these are something that most Asian readers familiar with.
As for the mental health representation, this book summaries it all together. Anxiety and OCD is a big part
of Melati. The inner conversation between Melati and the so-called Djinn and the description of Melati’s
tapping as a way to cope with her anxiety/OCD was well written by the author.
And lastly, the Muslim representation in this book was spot on. The mentioned of Djinn, going to Ustaz for
seeking medication, and Melati’s confused thought about the using of ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attacks
instead during the prayers. We do believe that Djinn existed, and even some Muslims still believe that when
you’re not being faithful and close enough to God, that’s the cause of your anxiety, depression, and
stress. Being a Muslim herself, Alkaf delivered all of these intricate perspectives from Muslims and made
the best sense out of it in this book.
THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE BOOK
The book doesn’t have much spoiler except it is a tough reading for those who like a light and simple story.
As for a teenager like me, I have to blend all the information that mention in the book including the
history which is the real fact, the mental health description of OCD person which is really new for me
and the supernatural or the djinn that related with the religious belief. But all the aspects made this
book remarkable and won’t be very easy to forget.
CLOSURE
I would recommend this read to all Malaysians and Non-Malaysians alike. If you’ve studied your history,
you would know that many policies were put into place following the events of 13th May to avoid anything
like it from ever happening again. But policies or not, the decision ultimately lies in the hands of the people.
Fighting is incited by the people, but so is peace. It all comes down to whether or not we want to see each
other as Malaysians, as people, and whether or not we are willing to hold up our sky together, no matter
the forces that try to drive us apart. This is our country, our Malaysia, our home.
Note: a Djinn is believed in Malay culture and Islamic folklore to be a genie-like spiritual entity
