THE GINGERBREAD GIRL
The reader-response theory is when conducting an analysis of a literary text, you are able to
incorporate both your individual thoughts and feelings as well as your own unique point of view thanks to
this theory. Reader-response theorists believe that it is significant if a particular character reminds you of
your father or if a particular passage reminds you of something from your childhood. The reader-response
theory isn't just about having a deeper comprehension of a piece of writing; it's also about having a deeper
comprehension of who you are. Therefore in this write up, I will analyze the play The Gingerbread Girl.
This play picks up where the story of the Gingerbread Man left off but adds some fresh and hilarious new
turns along the way. The tale develops into more of a Frankenstein story than a traditional fairy tale, but it
still holds out hope for a happy conclusion. Hence, the analysis will consist of how the characters in the
story was portrayed, how the plot deployed by the author and also overall overview of the story and
comparison with the original story.
Firstly, to begin with the character aspect, th
e character that will be analyzed is
the protagonist which is the Gingerbread Girl. Her name was Ginger and the plot revolves
a lot around the main character. Ginger is a dynamic character where she actually
undergoes quite a significant change in her own character throughout the course of the
play. Ginger was originally a weak and easily scared girl. This is proven when the
assistant of the Baker, Igor The Hunchback, did a silly dance and Ginger tried to copy his
moves but ended up looking faint and tired. Another event that proves how she was an
easily scared girl was the event where she got scared when the ‘Man’ disturbed her rest.
However, aside from those characteristics of her, her character developed in a way that
showed how she was actually a very smart character. She quickly learned speech from
the baker and this quality of her flourished by the end of the play where she managed to
save the Gingerbread Man from dying. Aside from the main protagonist Ginger, there
were also several characters that I noticed were added from other characters of different
stories like Mary and the little lamb and also Igor, the Hunchback of Notre Dame. These
characters intrigued me as much as how Ginger did when I noticed how the writer
managed to insert these interesting characters into the story.
Next, moving on to the plot of the play, at the beginning of the story, readers were
introduced to the situation where the baker went to the local village store to buy some ingredients to
bake. The villagers and the shopkeeper were against her baking another gingerbread man for the
disaster that happened before with the Gingerbread Man. The conflict started when the cops started
questioning the Baker and Igor, whether it was true or not that the baker was trying to bake another
gingerbread man. The baker said no and she was definitely not lying because she was trying to
bake a gingerbread girl instead! Soon after that, the gingerbread girl actually came alive and was
named Ginger. She was a pretty but weak gingerbread. Then, something happened to stir the peace
which made Ginger feel very scared and soon flew away from the baker’s house. The climax was
when Ginger eventually came across a fox who was crying due to something she was unsure of.
She helped the fox and listened to what happened with the Gingerbread man. Finally, she was able
to help the fox and save the almost-dying gingerbread man. At the end, they ended up becoming
friends or maybe something more than that. The whole plot was almost similar to the real version of
the Gingerbread Girl, but in this version, Ginger was a little bit feeble but she managed to save the
gingerbread Man. I enjoyed reading this story because of how interesting the way each scene
unfolds, especially with the appearance of the three cops which definitely was very humorous.
The story of the Gingerbread Girl was definitely an enjoyable read. The story was written as a
spin off of the Gingerbread Man and was probably a funnier version of the spin off of the story. Throughout
the process of reading it, I feel very entertained considering the elements of jokes that were inserted into
the story. For example, the part where the cops pulled out their guns, the guns were actually just a
banana, big squash and a long roll of French bread. Something else that I felt was very interesting was the
scene where an element from Frankenstein was inserted into the story. In the original version of
gingerbread man, the bakers only baked him using the normal baking method, but in this story, it was
mentioned that ‘Igor covered the table in aluminum foil and Baker brought out a lightning rod of some sort.
Ginger then rose off the table after the lightning flash. This is the scene that was referred from the story
Frankenstein, the scene when he was awoken from the slumber too, was through lighting. However, there
is something that I wished the script writer had written which is the continuance of what happened next
after the gingerbread man agreed to stay. He no longer longed for freedom so I really wonder what made
him decide to stay instead of running away like he used to do. I really wished the author had put this in a
clearer picture.
In conclus
ion, the play ‘The Gingerbread Girl’ for me was a very
amusing journey considering how the author of the spin-off managed to
cultivate the story with the insertion of various references from various
different stories likewise the usage of characters mentioned in the
previous. I had so much fun reading the story. The plot too, intrigued me
for its uniqueness yet how it still was based on the original version of the
story. Aside from that, the variety of elements inserted into the story also
managed to keep my interest going and I kept on looking forward to what
happened next in the play. I too was able to relate to Ginger as she was
trying her best to save the gingerbread man for he was the same kind of
creature as her. Overall, my experience reading the story The Gingerbread
Girl was full of laughter and anticipation.
