ST. PATRICK’S SPC Review
COLLEGE
MAGHERA Easter 2020
Message from the Principal
Dear Pupils, Parents and Guardians,
This has been the most unusual term in the history of the College. In fact, we are living
in a real-life History lesson. Who could have imagined the crisis that we find ourselves
in? It is surreal and like something out of a movie. Look at all the people and things that
we took for granted. We now realise that we really appreciate and miss them, including
school.
Before our closure on the 20th March, we were having a busy and very successful term,
not least becoming Ulster Senior Camogie Champions, reaching the Paul McGirr All
Ireland Semi-Final and the Final of the MacRory Cup. Disappointingly, despite our
preparations, the final did not proceed due to the restrictions imposed on ‘large
gatherings’. We were all gutted by this, especially the boys and their managers.
Hopefully, this final will go ahead in the future and we will meet our arch-rivals, St
Colman’s, once more. We also had a large proportion of our Year 12 achieve success
in their GCSE Maths, achieving their first GCSE. Little did we know what was on the
horizon and how the whole summer exam season would not happen. I hope our exam
bulletins have allayed the worries that you have around this. You will see the rest of our
achievements for this term in the content of this bulletin.
If you watch The Voice you will have seen our very talented past pupil Brooke Scullion
who has made it through to the semi-finals. We are so proud of her. When the
competition resumes in the Autumn, I hope that you will all support her.
School as we know it has been very different. We all miss the human contact and the
interactions with each other. However, I know that staff are trying very hard to maintain
this in a virtual environment. I am really impressed with the samples of work that I have
seen posted on our social media. I am also really pleased that we are able to maintain
our ‘hot chocolate’ rewards, again virtually. Thank you to all pupils who have
contributed, completed tasks and worked hard. Please keep up this effort. Continue
with a daily routine in relation to your schoolwork. Structure, routine, self-discipline and
focus will be very important in the days, weeks and possibly months ahead. Keeping
healthy will also be important for your mental and physical well-being. Refer to the
guidance that has been shared with you over the last few weeks. We will continue to
update this. Support your family – we are all finding this difficult and challenging.

Message from the Principal (cont’d)
It is important that we all take some time away from our studies to focus on our families
and wellbeing. There are some tips for this later in the bulletin. The spike in COVID 19
in N. Ireland is expected over the Easter break. Please remember to follow the advice
that has been given.
Remember the power of prayer. Pray for all of our key workers and all of the victims of
COVID 19. Pray that we come out of this closer, stronger and more appreciative of what
we have.
Continue to stay safe and a massive thank you to the St Patrick’s College family for the
support and patience shown to one another. St Patrick, Pray for Us.
Stay safe,
Mrs B Mussen Mrs J. Young Mr J. McGale

An open letter to our College family….
This wasn’t the way it was meant to be. 2019-20 was our
year. 7 years of growing up and learning together wasn’t
supposed to end this way. So many things not complete
and so many dreams not fulfilled. Over the past few days
we have chatted and cried about things that we will miss
and worried and surmised about what our future might
hold. Then, as we witness on the news from all over the
world stories of death and suffering as a result of this
terrible virus, a truth has finally hit home. We are the lucky
ones. We are the ones that have had forewarning. We are
the ones who have a great chance at a bright future.
Éireoidh an ghrian arís. Feicfimid a chéile arís agus
déanfaimid ceiliúradh ceart ar an turas iontach seo a bhí
againn – ach go dtí an lá sin, fanaigí sa bhaile, fanaigí slán
agus beidh lá eile ag Clann Phádraig.
We will have better days. We will see each other again and
we will finish our school journey in style – but until that day,
stay at home, stay safe and Clann Phádraig will rise again.

Obituary
The new calendar year brought the tragic news of the untimely passing of past
pupil Michael Og McKenna (R.I.P.). Michael Og was a pleasant and well-liked
pupil, who will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Our thoughts and
prayers are with Michael’s family and friends. Thankfully our 2 injured Year 12
pupils are well on the road to recovery.
St Patrick, pray for him.
Staff Successes
The College, and two of our teachers, were honoured to
have been nominated in the Families First NI Education
Awards. Mrs Francine Walls and Mr Colum Lavery, who
were both nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award,
attended a lavish award ceremony in the Titanic Centre in
February, which was hosted by Pete Snodden.
Unfortunatley no awards were won, but it was still a proud
night where the amazing work of our teachers was
recognised. Thank you to everyone in the College
community who took the time to leave such lovely
comments. It is nice to know we are appreciated for the
work we do.
Despite the scramble to get work ready for pupils to do during lockdown, our staff still took the time
to remember the needy. A collection was organised, and a sizeable donation was made to
Maghera foodbank. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Pupil Successes
Unfortunately, our excellent run in the Concern Debate competition came to an end. We beat 136
other schools out of a possible 160 in the league table and were only knocked out after a second
set of criteria was introduced to differentiate between groups – so close!!!
This was our first year debating at this level and pupils met every expectation placed on them; the
hours they dedicated to this outside of their studies reflects the calibre of pupil we have in the
College.
e.
The College is proud to announce that 4 of our Year 13 pupils have been accepted on to the
Pathway Opportunity Programme at Queen’s University, Belfast. Eimear Mullan and Madison
O’Neill have been accepted to Biological Sciences, Cianan McGrellis to Medicine, Dentistry, and
Biomedical Sciences and Filip Betlejewski to Computer Sciences. Well done and good luck to all.
Page | 5
Year 12 pupil Tiarnan McErlean has been nominated as OCN School Learner of the Year. We
wish him good luck at the Awards Ceremony in the Stormont Hotel, Belfast, which has
unfortunately been postponed due to COVID 19 restrictions.
Congratulations to our 55 Year 14 students who received their John Paul II Awards at a ceremony
in the Millennium Forum, in Derry. We are so proud of you!

MacRory Cup captain, Ethan Doherty, was awarded an Ulster Schools All-Star award in football.
Two senior camogs were also honoured – joint captain Céat McEldowney and Bronagh
McCullagh. Congratulations to all 3 All-Stars
Although the MacRory Cup final was postponed, we would like to acknowledge and thank the
generous sponsorship given by local businesses – Mallon McCormick Solicitors, Premier Electric,
Klubfunder Sports and P&A Contracts (UK) Ltd.
Past pupil, Brooke Scullion, who starred in many of the
College’s recent musical productions, has performed
amazingly well on ITV’s The Voice. She wowed all 4
coaches but eventually decided to join Team Meghan
Trainor. Brooke has successfully battled her way to
the live semi-final. She now needs everyone to VOTE
when she hits the big stage in the Autumn. Best of
luck Brooke.

We are proud of Eimear Murray 9Cr. Eimear has raised the fantastic amount of £900 and donated
11 inches of hair to The Little Princess Trust. They provide free real hair wigs to children and
young people with hair loss, and fund vital research into childhood cancers. Eimear you are an
absolute star. Well done.
Ger McFlynn, a pupil in Year 8, recently turned 13 years
old. Ger and his family are self-isolating in their home
because of the coronavirus. They made the BBC News
headlines when Ger’s local club, Watty Graham GAC,
Glen, organised a 68 car ‘drive by’ of well-wishers. Ger
described the experience as “his best birthday ever”.
Happy Birthday Ger – your classmates will celebrate
with you when this is all over.
With lockdown in operation, the College has had to make its ‘Hot Chocolate Friday’ virtual. An
amazing 186 individuals have been nominated, some as many as five times.

Congratulations to Kate Byson who won our Christmas Bake-off. The quality of the baking was
exceptional. Mrs Young had to taste everything 4 times before she could pick the winner! The
baking has continued during lockdown. Our Year 9 pupils have been busy baking Easter cookies.
Pupils and staff have been working very hard to ensure meaningful learning is happening during
this difficult period. Some of the many examples of amazing work by our pupils are highlighted
below.

Our Year 11 footballers were defeated by the narrowest of margins in their Oisin McGrath
(formerly Brock Cup) semi-final. Best wishes to local rivals St. Mary’s GS in the final.
Congratulations to Luke O'Doherty and Lucy McKaigue who competed in the Ulster Cross Country
Finals. Luke placed a magnificent 5th as a result of a very strong run around the 1600m course at
Mallusk Playing Fields. Lucy also had an impressive run to place 55th in the Mini Girl's race. Each
race involved approximately 150 athletes who had qualified from the 5 District Championships
held earlier in the year. Thanks to coach Miss Mary Devlin for all the work she does promoting
athletics in the College.
The College hosted its annual Indoor Athletics Shield for our local Primary Schools. The talent
and sportsmanship on display was superb! The team competition was extremely close throughout

College House System
The much-anticipated launch of the College House System was postponed due to the coronavirus
pandemic. The main aims of the College House System are to:
• provide each pupil with a sense of belonging within the College community.
• be FUN and EXCITING through competition.
• be a POSITIVE experience.
• be fundamental to pastoral care and melted into the fabric of the College.
After a public vote it was decided to name our 4 houses after local rivers. The fantastic House
badges were designed by the talented Mr P. O’Connor from our Art Department.
The College hosted a very successful series of Open Events for pupils hoping to transfer in
September. The 3 events were very well attended by enthusiastic P6 and P7 pupils from many
local Primary Schools.
Page | 22
Trips
50 students and 5 members of staff had an early departure from the school when they attended
the Manchester City v Leicester City Premiership game. They also visited the RED half of
Manchester.
A group of 19 students and teachers and two volunteers from the community made the annual trip
to Romania with the College to deliver aid and assistance to a number of orphanages and
hospitals in the Brasov area. Our students worked extremely hard beforehand to fundraise for the
trip and raised in excess of £25,000.
The Music and Performing Arts Departments, along with members of the Choir, made a trip to
London in February. A visit to the Harry Potter Studios was one of many highlights.
Page | 23
The College also had a very successful ski trip to Northern Italy (thankfully before coronavirus took
a firm hold of the region). Thanks to Mr J. McGale, Miss A. Gormley and especially Mr M. Quinn
(who filled in at the last minute) for accompanying the pupils.

Communication from Parents
Now, more than ever, we welcome open communications with our staff. You can contact us by

Text help
All pupils in the College can access free software provided by the Education
Authority. This is designed to support research, revision, modern language
learning and to provide support to pupils’ literacy development. A help sheet
will be available on SIMS Parent App after Halloween and we would encourage
as many pupils as possible to download it on to a home computer to support
with a wide range of work from KS3 to A-level research.
Issues with Pupil Passwords
The following statement for has been issued for parents and pupils:
We understand that at this time, it may not always be possible for a pupil to contact
someone in their school. For this reason, a service has been put in place which allows a
parent or guardian to email [email protected] and provide the following
information:
• Student First Name and Surname
• Student Date of Birth
• Student Username
• Name of School
• School Address
A help video for students re OneNote - Class note has been posted to the opening page of login -
the noticeboard. Remember that Office 365 and Google apps have loads of help tutorials online
for both students and teachers.

These wee heroes have stayed indoors more than
they’ve ever known in their lives.
Their whole wee worlds have literally been turned
upside down.
All these rules they’ve never known.
A life they couldn’t have imagined.
Adults talking about others becoming unwell,
news reporting death after death.
Our poor kids’ minds must be racing.
Every day they get up and carry on despite all that’s
going on and continue trying their best with
schoolwork and the uncertainty off their future
education.
So, here’s to our wee heroes, today, tomorrow,
forever.
