Life Support Policy Update

To streamline educational practices and provide consistent life support education at Orlando Health, policy
5916-2504 “Life Support Courses” is being revised. A few updated revisions to note:
Orlando Health continues to provide required life support education to team members. Effective the soon to
be announced policy go-live date in PowerDMS, team members who elect to complete life support courses
(BLS, ACLS, PALS or NRP) from an external source other at an approved Orlando Health training center
will no longer be reimbursed for the course cost. Life support courses that occur at any Orlando Health
hospital, Health Central University and Southlake Hospital are approved for reimbursement.

 Vendor life support education that does take place at an approved onsite Orlando Health training
center is not eligible for reimbursement. The following courses do not occur at an Orlando Health
hospital site and will not be reimbursed by Orlando Health:
 ABC Certification
 All about CPR

 American Heart Association (AHA) E-cards are now accepted as a legitimate replacement for hard
copy AHA Life Support course completion cards. Cards contain a QR code to easily verify
legitimacy online at www.heart.org/cpr/mycard.

 Team members attending onsite Orlando Health life support courses required for their job
description must clock in and out through Kronos.

 As a reminder, team members who miss a registered course will be charged for the cost of the
course as a “no show” fee unless the team member either withdraws from the course in their LMS
transcript (while at work) or notifies the Human Resources Solution Center cancellation line (from
home) at least 24 hours prior to course start time.

 Nursing and allied health team members are expected to complete ECG coursework prior to
attending initial advanced life support courses.

Blood Culture Volumes

An audit was recently conducted by the ORMC Microbiology Laboratory. Corporately the adult blood
culture bottles were filled below the FDA and manufacturer’s approved minimum volume 47.0% of the time.
Only 16.0% were filled with the manufacturer’s recommended volume (best practice). Under filling blood
culture bottles may cause false negative results, or delay in patient results and treatment. Please look at
this Lab Ed Brief to review proper volumes for filling each blood culture bottle and the consequences to
patient care when blood cultures bottles are not filled to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
