From the Board Chair

Dear Friends of the MNjcc,

Now more than ever, we at the MNjcc understand that people at
all ages and stages thrive when they are connected to a welcoming
community that assists in meeting the daily needs of its members.
These communities are not created or nurtured without civic-minded
people like you.

We encourage you to read our 2019/20 Impact Report so you
may see some of the ways we have adapted our programming to
connect with all of our members and program participants. From our
groundbreaking ‘No Silence on Race’ initiative to our new virtual
fitness and learning platform, MNjcc On Demand, our team continues
to innovate, engage and respond to feedback in order that we can
meet the evolving needs in our community.

Through our hybrid offering of over 2,000 in-person and virtual
programs, the J facilitated over 90,000 visits to a program or service
over this past year. This would be an impressive achievement in a
normal year, and that it occurred during 2019/20 speaks volumes to
the quality and dedication of the MNjcc staff and volunteer groups.

4 Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

Our Board of Directors is very proud of the impact the J has had
on those we serve and of our ability to pivot during this pandemic
to serve the community beyond our physical walls. We could not
do what we do without the support of our donors, volunteers, staff,
community leaders, and partners – all of whom share a common
belief that what we do makes a meaningful difference in the lives of
people who live amongst us. Thank you for your continued support.

From the Executive Director

Dear MNjcc Community,
This has been a challenging year for our community in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I
couldn’t be prouder of our team at the J for facing this challenge head-on. We innovated, we rose to the
occasion, and we became a hybrid J of in-person and virtual opportunities to engage. When our facilities
were forced to close, we broadened our approach to community engagement. Programs once limited
to our physical building are now being viewed all over the world through Zoom and our new online
platform, MNjcc On Demand.
Our work this year allowed us to lean into our most important ability – community connection. We have
always been more than a building. The J nurtures mind, body and spirit of everyone in our community,
lifts up and enriches the lives of the vulnerable among us, and connects people to each other and to our
community. The J is where everyone belongs.

6 Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

I am excited to share an overview of our work this past year through the
Impact Report. In the following pages you will find highlights that affirm
the breadth and depth of our J’s impact on the Greater Downtown Toronto
community. This document reflects the growth of generosity, commitment,
and involvement from our Staff, Members, Board, Community Partners,
Volunteers and Donors. We couldn’t do it without your support. On behalf
of the MNjcc, thank you.

Aquatics

Thanks to the generous support of Freddie Shore, the MNjcc was able
to offer free group swim lessons to children in financial need through
the Freddie Shore Learn to Swim Program, and to keep our beloved
saltwater pool open when possible. With careful protocols for COVID-
19 safety, we welcomed swimmers of all ages, to enhance their water
skill and safety, keep up their fitness routine, and pursue therapeutic
goals in the water.

Thank you for helping our Kudos to everyone

Music

The Music Department, including Adult Choirs, Theory classes, Ensembles,
and the Suzuki Music Program, tailored programs for virtual learning,
maintaining our vibrant communities, ages 2.5 to 90+ years. 253
participants of all levels were united online through the universal power of
music, and over 250 guests from around the world attended the year-end solo
Suzuki recitals hosted on Zoom.

Early Childhood Education

We were able to reopen both the Libbie Cowan Childcare Centre and
Thomas & Marjorie Schwartz Preschool in late summer/early fall to provide
parents with some respite and children with stimulating programming.
Adapting our program to include social distancing and other Ministry of
Education and Toronto Public Health safety guidelines was no easy feat,
but our early childhood education team was up to the challenge – creating
programming to ensure that children were engaged, happy, and healthy.
Staff, children, and parents also adapted to Zoom alternatives when
necessary. Our Chanukah concert on Zoom welcomed many guests, including
family members from as far away as Australia.

Program highlight: Seniors

This year, the Miles Nadal JCC and Centennial College were
awarded an NSERC College and Community Innovation
Program grant to explore the spectrum of emerging issues
our seniors are experiencing as a result of the pandemic.
This research study, which included a survey of almost 300
older adults and in-depth interviews, revealed increased
social isolation, the barriers of unequal digital literacy
and the need for more community/peer-led programs.
This important partnership has helped us innovate our
programming, outreach and communications to improve
the lives of our seniors, explore ways of increasing their
participation in our virtual community programs and
services, and develop a best practices toolkit to disseminate
to community partners and organizations who support older
adults and seniors.

Program Highlight: Access and Inclusion

COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact on the vulnerable populations in our community,
including seniors and young adults with disabilities. With programs cancelled and routines
disrupted, social isolation, loneliness, anxiety and depression can set in.

The MNjcc team worked tirelessly to respond to the unique challenges that the pandemic
has posed, expanding our program reach to provide more opportunities for our community
to connect, be active, learn new skills and knowledge, and have fun. Our response centred
around a robust hybrid of virtual activities, ranging from calling our seniors to touch base, to
creating our online video platform – MNjcc On Demand – giving our community new ways to
stay connected and engaged.

Summer Fun Intensive

Thanks to the support of the Wagner Green Family Trust and The Azrieli Foundation, we
provided 164 hours of live virtual programming for youth between the ages of 18-35 with
developmental disabilities. This past summer, the program catered to 500 young adults. From
yoga classes to drama classes to civic engagement, the Intensive program covered it all! As
a result of this successful pilot, we have been able to continue to provide the Fun Intensive to
young adults with disabilities throughout the year, providing an important space for them to
connect and socialize with their community.

17www.mnjcc.org

Program Highlight: The Israeli Connection

JCCs were founded originally as settlement agencies 100 years ago. In today’s context, when Israelis first arrive
in Canada, they often do so without any extended family, support systems or friendship circles. Cue The Israeli
Connection (TIC) – connecting participants to a community of friends, support networks, and the Jewish community
at large, providing opportunities for lay leadership and community involvement through an array of arts and
cultural programming. TIC is an inclusive and welcoming hub for the Israeli-Canadian community in downtown
Toronto, emphasizing strengthening Israeli and Jewish identities and building the next generation of active
participants and leaders in the community.

More than 5,000 individuals have engaged in TIC programs this year, through an array of deeply meaningful fun
and educational activities; staff is supported by a team of more than 20 volunteers. Over 80% of participants come
from downtown and midtown Toronto, demonstrating the need for a downtown hub for Israeli life programming.

Kabbalat Shabbat
TIC’s Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday evening) program, which hosts 100 people, has always been a sold-out event.
For 10-20% of participants, these dinners are their first time attending one of our events. Through food, music,
children’s activities, and a true home feel, Kabbalat Shabbat dinners are that important first step in welcoming
newcomer Israeli families to the community, and encourage all attendees to engage further in other TIC events and
with the broader Toronto Jewish community.

18 Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

Program Highlight: Jewish&

Emerging from the desire to explicitly acknowledge, support and celebrate Jewish diversity within the downtown
Toronto community, Jewish& launched in August 2019, gathering multi-faith and multi-cultural individuals, couples
and families for Jewish exploration, education and celebration. The name, Jewish&, aims to move the conversation
away from qualifying and quantifying our Jewish identities, making space for the possibility of holding multitudes –
our identities are informed by many factors that coexist, and we are richer for it.

In 2019/20, more than 350 individuals engaged in Jewish& programs, including Holiday Crafternoons, Jewish&
Shabbat, Challah Hangs, Chrismukkah, a Jewish Foundations Class, a Jewish Mixtape Class, and an A – Z of
Intermarriage Book Launch.

Jewish Foundations, Intro to Judaism class

Jewish Foundations launched in Spring 2020 in response to an identified need in the Jewish& community for a
welcoming space to learn about Judaism. Like a Jewish 101, this class is for anyone looking to begin, refresh, or
deepen their Jewish knowledge. The course covers Jewish history, Shabbat, The Synagogue and Jewish prayer,
Jewish life cycle events, Kashrut, Holidays and the Jewish year cycle, and Spirituality. Our first course welcomed 16
participants, most of whom experienced the class as an entry point for more Jewish connection.

Jewish& Online

Jewish& has built an active online community to share resources, support one another, and amplify the voices of
the Jewish& community in Toronto and abroad. Since launching one year ago, our Facebook group has more than
350 members, with nearly 1,200 followers engaged on our Instagram page.

No Silence on Race

The MNjcc regards the diversity of our community as a source of strength and
richness. We strive to be a Centre which embraces diversity, and where we
work actively against all forms of discrimination and hate.

In 2020, the MNjcc was proud to be a signatory of No Silence on Race
– an open letter challenging Jewish organizations in Canada to commit to
anti-racism, written and endorsed by a broad coalition of Jewish people of
colour. This letter is intended to galvanize the Canadian Jewish community to
act on principals of allyship, education, consultancy and partnership when
dealing with systemic racism. We launched a staff committee and our Board
has struck a task force, ensuring opportunities for everyone to participate and
guide this work, centering the lived experience of staff and communities of
colour.

We provided MNjcc programs with an anti-racist lens, such as Art and Artists
on Being Black and Jewish, a conversation on art and identity which explored
the intersection of Jewishness and Blackness through film, photography, music,
and performance, attracting more than 300 attendees via livestream.

Lay Leader – Virtual Seniors’ Support Groups

“ Realizing the significant psychological impact COVID was having

specifically for isolated seniors, we started a Virtual Seniors’ Support
Group. This free, bi-weekly program quickly grew a regular group –
a safe place to talk about their struggles, learn from each other, and
feel connected emotionally. It has helped to remind them that they
are not alone. It has been beautiful for me to see members share
their thoughts and ideas with one another and to see them develop
competence in their ability to continue to lead as meaningful a life

as possible during this difficult time. ”

Community Partners

The MNjcc brings together diverse partners to support programs that connect people with their community. This strong
fabric of partnerships became even more valuable in meeting the needs of our communities during the COVID-19
closure. Many of our partners work closely with us to create communities of practice, serve as advisors, and give and
receive training, in order to deliver the diversity of programming available at the MNjcc and in the community.

Donors

This past year has been challenging for us as a non-profit organization, as it has been for so many in our community,
and we truly couldn’t do what we do without our generous donors. In a year unlike any other, our donors made it
possible for us to adapt our engagement and programming, allowing our community to come together even while we
were physically apart.

We sincerely thank our donors for their ongoing support and for working alongside us to build a stronger community
and enable us to envision recovery.
