FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends of the MNjcc,
We are thrilled to share with you our 2020/21 Impact Report. During a year that challenged
us all, our MNjcc community has come together in ways we had never imagined, and we
are so proud to celebrate our achievements together. This year has reminded us that
change is not necessarily something to fear; it can also be something to embrace.
Throughout this time of upheaval, we have found new ways to embrace change, adapting
our work to meet the evolving needs of our community. Most importantly, we have come
together to support those in our community who are disproportionately impacted.
The importance of mental health and wellness has become a crucial topic as we all
navigate the impacts of the pandemic, and the MNjcc is at the centre of that discussion.
With accessibility and inclusivity at the forefront, this year we continued to holistically
incorporate wellness into our mission-driven programs, with a focus on supporting improved
mental health, stress management, mindfulness, and recovery for all abilities and stages of
life.
In many ways, our work at the MNjcc has never been so critical. More than ever, we
understand that people at all ages and stages thrive when they are connected to a
welcoming and supportive community – and community connection is what we do best! This
past year, our building was often closed, but our community is more vibrant and open than
ever.
Our Impact Report is a testament to the resiliency we are building together towards a
brighter future. And the future of our MNjcc is bright! We will continue to stand strong,
proudly acting as the downtown hub of inclusive Jewish community. We will build on our
success as a centre for youth enrichment and recreation; as a flourishing aquatic centre
that trains the next generation of swimmers, instructors, and lifeguards; and as a safe
space for our marginalized communities to come together, share, learn and connect.
We are proud of all that we have accomplished this year, and we could not have done it
without the support and dedication of our donors, volunteers, staff, community leaders, and
partners. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all of those who have continued to support us
along this journey – your generosity is inspiring, and we look forward to continuing our work
together to make a meaningful difference in our community. We hope you feel as inspired
as we do as we celebrate our accomplishments from the past year.
On behalf of the MNjcc, thank you. We couldn’t be more proud and grateful.
Sincerely,
BRIAN PUKIER HARRIET WICHIN

STORIES OF IMPACT
Throughout this past year’s upheaval, the MNjcc has seen resilience everywhere: in our staff who
worked to make our physical environment safe and to bring our programs online, in our members
who shifted their routines to accommodate for online programming, and in our Board of Directors
who helped us weather the storm with forward-thinking and leadership. Here are some highlights
of the ways we made an impact over the 2020/21 year.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION z”l
Libbie Cowan Childcare Centre, Thomas & Marjorie Schwartz Preschool Centre
Made possible by the generous support of Thomas and Marjorie Schwartz, and
Harold and Shelley Wolkin, our Childcare, Preschool Centre & Junior Kindergarten
were able to operate at 90% capacity this year, adapting programs to keep
children engaged, happy, and healthy while following Ministry and Toronto Public
Health guidelines. Upon returning to the classroom in September 2020 after six-
month closure, children and educators alike had to adjust to a new environment,
new routines, and new peers. In the fall of 2021 we introduced two new
programs: Yoga with Maggie, and a weekly Suzuki music class. Through these
offerings, students developed their skills in coordination, memory, and listening,
playing in our gym and rooftop playground, and creating their own instruments!
In June 2021 we celebrated the retirement and career of Cathy Indig after 16
years of remarkable leadership and dedication to the children and families at the
MNjcc. Taking the torch as our new Director of Early Childhood Education, we
welcomed Cheri Szereszewski to the J family. Cheri’s strengths in leadership,
curriculum and communication will ensure we continue to
build an inclusive, creative, and nurturing space for our
children – the future generation of our JCC community.
JCamp
After a one-year hiatus, JCamp came back stronger than ever in summer 2021!
With an eager staff team of fifteen, new camper units, and exciting new theme
days, our JCamp welcomed over 90 campers each week, ages 2½ to 9 – our largest
summer ever! There was never a dull day as campers participated in yoga,
swimming, rooftop sprinkler parties, off-site excursions to local playgrounds,
dress-up days, Maccabi games, and magic shows!
ARTS & CULTURE
Movement & Dance with Shoshana
This joyful, free-style, choreographed and virtual dance program
was a unique series that we offered as a gentle and accessible morning workout
for seniors, creating a new micro-community of older adults. Led by volunteer,
Shoshana Fainsilber, each month offered a different theme and playlist, and
participants were encouraged to get into the fun by changing their Zoom
backgrounds and adding props and costumes!
Choir
In spite of the physical limitations of gathering together to sing,
the MNjcc choir program made the most of their virtual practices and
performances. Choir leaders spent time learning and sharing new virtual
teaching techniques to support each other as a community of music
educators at the J. In the Community Choir, six audio/visual presentations
were released online, including a collaboration between adult choir
members and our younger Suzuki music students.
ARTS & CULTURE
Technical Support for Seniors
Delivered in partnership with Centennial College and TechServeTO, we identified 10 seniors in our community
who were unable to access our virtual programs due to technology barriers. We provided them with tablets
and safe in-person technology interventions in their homes. Five Peer Mentor volunteers were recruited and
provided with training workshops, tools and resources. The goal of the project was to study the effects of
COVID-19 and social distancing on older adults in our community. This year-long project was designed to
shed light on the demographic that has been most isolated from us this past year and in many ways, the
most affected by our building closure.
Suzuki Music Program Seniors ' Support Group
On average, 145 music students per This past year, our virtual
week participated in some type of music
programming at the J – including our Seniors' Support
Suzuki music education programming. Group continued
This past year, our Suzuki program to provide a safe and
focused on enrichment classes, from compassionate space for
enhanced composition courses to isolated older adults 65+
a dedicated Klezmer ensemble. Aside to connect with
from enhancing student experience community. During the bi-
overall, these courses also served to weekly meetings, topics
improve accessibility for music students ranging from fears and
with disabilities. The icing on the cake challenges, coping
for our Suzuki program this year was strategies, and ways
the series of virtual recitals that to feel more empowered
featured a total of over 300 were addressed. As many
participants and audience members of the participants
from all over the globe! commented, for them,
this program was and still
is a lifeline throughout
the pandemic.
It allowed them to not only learn and grow
emotionally over the course of the year but also to
connect with others experiencing similar issues of
social isolation – giving them the opportunity to make
lasting bonds and connections. This program
ran completely free of charge, and was led by lay
leader, Zoe Levitt, M.S.W.
FITNESS & AQUATICS
This past year was challenging for the MNjcc’s Fitness and Aquatics department, as it was for many of our
members and our community. With enhanced cleaning protocols and social distancing measures in place, we
confidently reopened the fitness centre and pool to welcome members back to the J. At the same time, we
acknowledged that everyone's comfort levels differed as the pandemic played out, and with that in mind we
found opportunities to adapt and evolve. Swim lessons, lane swimming and aquafit classes remained our
most popular onsite offerings and we were able to strengthen our portfolio of inclusive fitness by creating a
digital platform to include live-streamed and On Demand virtual fitness and wellness programming.
Welcoming Members Back
FITNESS & AQUATICS
MNjcc On Demand
Launching in 2020 and extending into
2021 and beyond, our Group Fitness and
Wellness teams successfully
offered 4,000+ hours of virtual content
and 1,600 unique fitness and wellness
videos from which to choose. On Demand
allows our members to maintain their
fitness routine from home, without losing
the diversity of programming they've come
to expect from the J. This change was
impactful not only from a physical health
perspective but offered members a way to
manage stress while maintaining their
social connections from home. When in-
person classes were able to resume at a
limited capacity, the On Demand
programming was maintained to give
members the flexibility of choice to either
continue exercising from home or to come
to the building (based on their personal
comfort level), without compromising on
quality or variety.
Lost Tribe E-Sports
With the generous support of Barry Alper, Sara Heller and Emma
Cass during our gym closure last year the MNjcc teamed up
with Lost Tribe E-Sports to create an NHL Fantasy Hockey
League. Specifically designed for our floor hockey members, it
was a fun and exciting venture that kept our 'regulars' connected
to our organization and to each other. Our winner, Joel Lessem,
was able to pick the jersey of his choice (Connor McDavid of the
Oilers) as his prize. The responses we received were amazing; the
league participants were thrilled to be a part of this new
program and expressed that it made watching NHL hockey
games even more fun. It was so successful that we've continued
our partnership with Lost Tribe E-Sports and already have a
league running for the 2021/22 season!
Swim Lessons & Aquatics
Early in the fall of 2020,
the MNjcc was given the green light to open
our pool and provide swim lessons
again. With proactive policies and
procedures put in place to limit the risk of
transmission of COVID-19, we were able
to safely and effectively run small group
and private lessons, Aquafit classes, and
lane swimming for a number of months
before being forced to shut down due to
new lockdown restrictions. During the
closure, thanks to the generosity of Freddie
Shore and his Learn to Swim Program, we
were able to offer free aquatic leadership
classes to people of all ages. After the
mandated closure, our accessible
saltwater pool was able to reopen again in
July 2021 so that our members and our
summer JCampers could enjoy the pool!
JEWISH LIFE & COMMUNITY “I FEEL SO ENERGIZED
AND FOCUSED AND
Jewish& ENGAGED AFTER
In the fall of 2019, The Miles Nadal JCC launched Jewish&, a programmatic
umbrella created with the intention of providing explicit space for our JEWISH& WORKSHOPS,
community members navigating multiple identities, to find support, ALMOST LIKE I JUST
connection and a Jewish home where they were not just accepted but
celebrated. These programs were geared to folks who were in (or WASHED MY GLASSES
importantly, of) interfaith, intercultural and mixed-heritage families, who AND AM VIEWING THINGS
were curious about Judaism or had chosen (or were in the process of
converting) to Judaism, and/or who were just discovering hidden or CLEARER, LIKE I FEEL
unexplored Jewish ancestry. HEARD, CONNECTED,
SUPPORTED”
Year Two we knew would be largely guided by pandemic restrictions so we planned for a year of robust
online programming. We began to gain a reputation both locally and nationally so we focused on bringing
in strategic partners to help us extend our reach. We met with our community monthly to stay in contact,
holding Rosh Chodesh circles for reflection, Jewish learning and community building. We also held monthly
cooking workshops led by lay-leaders with lived experience, empowering them to share their stories and
cultural expressions with the wider Jewish community. We continued to run sold-out Jewish Foundations
classes and we partnered with 18Doors, a national organization focused on empowering interfaith families
and couples, on several holiday-focused programs. Locally, we partnered on a monthly Jewish learning
gathering for interfaith families with Makom: Creative Downtown Judaism. Our in-person events, including
a field trip to Bela Farm in partnership with Shoresh and UJA’s young family connectors, and a Rosh
Hashanah hike and tashlich gathering in a ravine, sold out immediately and were highlights of the
programmatic year. We continued to consistently build our online community space and presence, with a
bustling community of over 2,000 from Toronto and beyond.
LGBTQ+ at the J
This past year, we have continued to be the heart and soul of
Toronto’s LGBTQ+Jewish community, providing queer Jews
with opportunities to gather, celebrate and thrive. Focused on
social events, advocacy and education, this program at the J
has become a resource, safer space, and home for all
LGBTQ+Jews across the spectrum of identities and
affiliations. 2020/21 saw us partnering with Jewish
community organizations including synagogues, schools and
summer camps to make their spaces and services more
inclusive for LGBTQ+ Jews. As the pandemic has so deeply
influenced how we gather, a core activity this year was
conducting community-based research into current and
future needs. This data will feed into a new programmatic
approach that we look forward to launching in 2022.
Lishma – Under 40 Adult Jewish Education
Thanks to the support of the J.B. and Dora Salsberg Fund, Lishma, the Jewish Learning Project entered its
third programming year in 2020-2021, continuing to stretch its vision of offering an empowering and deep
Jewish learning space for young adults in Toronto. Our anti-racism efforts were a particular point of pride
this year. In response to community interest in learning about racism, we offered our first ever summer
course ‘Learning and Unlearning Racism’ with Sara Yacobi-Harris. We had unprecedented interest,
accommodating over 40 learners. We then spent the year working with an anti-racism consultant and set
out benchmarks for our efforts, including engaging teachers and offering content focused on Sephardi,
Mizrahi and Jewish people of colour. We are proud to say we achieved this benchmark, engaging close to
200 students throughout the year, our largest cohort yet.
JEWISH LIFE & COMMUNITY
The Israeli Connection
JCCs were founded originally as settlement agencies more
than 100 years ago, but today, when Israelis first arrive in
Canada, they often do so without any extended family or
community knowledge. Cue The Israeli Connection - we
provide our participants with a community of Toronto
friends and support networks, creating opportunities
for lay leadership and community involvement through an
array of arts and cultural programming. TIC is an inclusive
and welcoming hub for the Israeli-Canadian community in
downtown Toronto, emphasizing strengthening Israeli and
Jewish identities and building the next generation of active
participants and leaders in the community. This past year,
the Israeli Connection programming calendar was packed
with exciting cultural events, Jewish holiday celebrations,
educational workshops, and clubs to connect Israelis with
the greater Toronto Jewish community. Our Support Israeli
Newcomers program blossomed as we paired our #JLife
teens with 25 children ages 4-10 that had recently moved
to Toronto from Israel with their families. In the fall of
2020, our teens helped the children learn English through
games and more formal conversations.
Additionally, 40 prospective Israeli families who were thinking about moving to Toronto were able to join
webinars to discuss the very real cultural challenges they may face as a result of being ex-pats and to
learn more about (Jewish) life and resources in Toronto. The participants of these webinars often
commented that resources like these were invaluable to them, helping them make arguably one of the
biggest decisions of their lives. More than 5,000 individuals have engaged in TIC programs this year,
supported by a team of more than twenty volunteers. Over 80% of participants come from downtown
and midtown Toronto, demonstrating the need for a downtown hub for Israeli life programming.

Tikkun Leil Shavuot
Our 14th year of offering this landmark downtown Jewish community event was a roaring success. In keeping
with the theme of the Jewish holiday, Shavuot where the idea is to learn all night, we offered 18 sessions
throughout the evening, with our most inclusive programming yet. Our presenters included representation
from Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrachi, Jewish&, Jews of Colour, Jews by Choice, Queer and Trans Jews, Jews of
all ages and abilities, and a variety of religious, spiritual and cultural Jewish identities, observances, and
approaches. We offered a Self-Guided Study Supplement, created in partnership with Aaron Rotenberg, that
featured text studies and art by community members. We offered blintzes through a partnership with
Lox+Shmear and shared a first-ever Spotify playlist. 1,000+ households signed up for sessions, and over 95
blintzes were eaten. We also initiated our first-ever crowd-funding effort to build deeper support by the
community, raising over $10,000 for the event. With the help of our programmers helmed by Lauren
Schreiber Sasaki and Cara Gold, and with the unwavering and eager contribution of people from every
supporting department, including many volunteers, our J showed that we can continue to be inclusive,
contemporary, relevant, and committed to programs that open up Jewish identity and themes to a broad
spectrum of people from all backgrounds and affinities.
ACCESS & INCLUSION
Fun Intensives
Thanks to the support of the Wagner Green Family Trust, The Azrieli Foundation, and a grant from the
Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility, we provided 45 weeks of daily, live, virtual programming for youth
between the ages of 18-30 with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The Fun Intensive model
offered opportunities for connection, reduced social isolation, and allowed these young adults to be
independent, to contribute, and to learn with their peers in a barrier-free environment. Having now run this
program successfully for three seasons each with groups of 15-20 participants, we have received
overwhelmingly positive feedback and requests from participants and their families to expand the program.
With more funding, our objective is to amplify our outreach, increase the program capacity, expand our
roster of instructors, and produce a webinar to instruct other organizations on how to bring the Fun
Intensive model to their communities across the province.
The Citizenship Project
As in previous years, the Citizenship Project at the MNjcc aimed to empower civic leadership amongst a
group of young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
The project culminated in a virtual
session with Toronto City Councilor,
Kristyn Wong-Tam, to discuss the City’s
response to COVID-19 and how it has
affected people with
disabilities. Participants also had the
chance to engage in meaningful
conversations around housing and
employment issues, and overall, the
program was regarded by participants
as a great way to keep engaged and
learn about issues that affect both them
and their communities.
ReelAbilities Film Festival & ReelEducation
Our ReelAbilities Film Festival is the largest film festival in North America dedicated to promoting
awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories, and art of people with disabilities. Celebrating its sixth
year, the festival expanded its reach, showcasing 15 shorts, documentaries, and feature films to more than
2,100 viewers across North America. The festival also hosted 24 virtual events, including an industry
workshop on creating accessible social media content, and a comedy night where 14 Deaf and/or disabled
comedians showcased their talents. All of our festival films were screened with open captions and
audio description, and all live virtual events were offered with ASL Interpretation and CART transcription.
Throughout the year, our ReelAbilities team worked beyond the festival to raise awareness and promote
inclusion by bringing ReelEducation films and conversations to schools, community centres, and corporate
offices – free of charge. This past year, we had 16 panellists, facilitators and artists, as well as 10
youth with lived experience of disability, lead virtual workshops that engaged 23,992 students across seven
provinces and 34 different school boards. In a survey conducted about the lasting impacts
of ReelAbilities and ReelEducation resources, 95% of respondents agreed that our films and workshops
sparked conversations about disability and/or deafness – hopefully setting the tone for a more inclusive
and barrier-free future.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY
& INCLUSION
The MNjcc has created a community guided by the Jewish values of embracing
diversity and welcoming all. We regard the diversity of our community as a source of
strength and richness. We strive to be a Centre that embraces diversity and equity,
and where we work actively against all forms of discrimination and hate.
This year, six MNjcc lay leaders and staff members joined the
Circles for Reconciliation program. Meeting weekly, the group
learned from members of the Indigenous community with direct
experience, participating in discussions about dispelling harmful
myths, intergenerational trauma, the '60s scoop, the Indian Act
and our justice system.
The Circles for Reconciliation group continues to advise the MNjcc
on matters of allyship with the Indigenous community, with the
goal of creating more inclusive, equitable and barrier-free access
to our building, our programming, and our community.
