Common Causes of UPS Power Failure

1. Batteries
Batteries are considered the UPS system’s heart. To ensure their pristine condition, they
require regular check-ups. That’s why batteries should be inspected every six months.
2. Capacitors
UPS units consist of more than a dozen of capacitors. They’re responsible for ltering power

uctuations and degrade over time. They range in size and type and should be replaced every
ve to seven years. To extend their life span, it’s ideal to inspect them annually.
3. Overheating
Components like fans, lters and power supplies may suffer from overheating due to wear and
tear. These parts need regular inspection to avoid problems.
4. Parts Susceptible to Dust and Dirt
Other UPS components such as contactors, lters and fans gather dirt and dust over time. This
requires regular cleaning to keep them properly functioning.

How to Troubleshoot Common UPS Power Issues?

If you have purchased a premium quality UPS power unit, you’ll be less likely to experience
problems. However, it does not guarantee a fail-proof performance when other factors are
taken into consideration. So, in case you experience any issues, here are some troubleshooting
tips and preliminary solutions that you can follow:

1. If your UPS won’t turn on, make sure it is properly plugged in and all connections are secured.
If still unresponsive, try to reduce the load to the unit and disconnect any non-essential
equipment and reset.
2. If the unit operates on battery while connected to utility power, try to unplug other
unnecessary equipment. You can also move the UPS to another circuit if it’s because of

uctuating voltage.
3. UPS units should work instantaneously. If it fails, make sure that the battery is charged and
no excessive devices are connected.

When the unit remains unresponsive, unplug the UPS and take it to the nearest service centre.
