Extended Conceptual Model: Community of Inquiry
Social presence is “the ability of par.cipants to iden.fy with the community (e.g., course of study), communicate purposefully in a trus.ng environment, and develop inter-personal rela.onships by way of projec.ng their individual personali.es.” (Garrison, 2009)
Teaching Presence is the design, facilita.on, and direc.on of cogni.ve and social processes for the purpose of realizing personally meaningful and educa.onally worthwhile learning outcomes (Anderson, Rourke, Garrison, & Archer, 2001).
Cogni/ve Presence is the extent to which learners are able to construct and confirm meaning through sustained reflec.on and discourse (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2001).
Environmental (campus, ins.tu.onal, organiza.onal) presence is defined as the vision, space, design, and facilita.on that supports learners through high touch points and an integrated experience from point of first contact through enrollment, persistence, comple.on, and beyond.
(Be,s, Holt, Dvorak & Dodd, currently under development)
