January 2026~ Page 2From Your [email protected]’s [email protected] Everyone,As we close out another year here in Auburn Lake Trails, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to every resident who helped make 2025 such a memorable chapter in our foothill community. Auburn Lake Trails is special not just because of where we live, but because of how we live together, with neighborliness, resilience and a shared love for this place we call home. This year, we also said goodbye to several cherished members and dear friends. Their presence, kindness, and contributions left a lasting imprint on our community, and they will be deeply missed. As we move into the new year, may we honor their memory by continuing the spirit of connection, generosity, and care that they helped cultivate here in Auburn Lake Trails.A huge thank‑you goes out to our incredible clubs and volunteer groups. From holiday celebrations to community yard sales, from golf tournaments to craft fairs, from pancake breakfasts to festive gatherings, your energy and creativity brought joy to our members all year long. You’re the heartbeat of ALT, and your efforts make our community vibrant, welcoming and fun. This past year reminded us how strong we are when we show up for one another, whether it’s waving at the gate, lending a hand, or joiningtogether for events that make ALT feel like a true village. Every contribution, big or small, helped strengthen the fabric of our community.Looking ahead to 2026, I’m filled with optimism. We have exciting opportunities to enhance our amenities, support our clubs, and continue preserving the natural beauty that makes Auburn Lake Trails such a unique and cherished place to live. My hope is that we carry forward the same spirit of cooperation, stewardship, and community pride that defined this past year.Thank you for your trust, your participation, and your commitment to keeping ALT a place we’re proud to call home. ALT Fire Safe CouncilMike Connelly—[email protected] WE DID IT!For the 21st consecutive year, Auburn Lake Trails has been recognized as a Firewise USA® Community by the National Fire Protection Association. For residents on the FAIR Plan, this recognition can lower your insurance payment 10%. Most insurance companies also offer a discount for living in a recognized Firewise USA® community. Check with your Broker.Zone 0 Implementation DelayedFollowing the wildfires in the Los Angeles Area last winter, Governor Newsom requested that CAL FIRE complete its recommendations and implement Zone 0 (within five feet of structures) by January 1, 2026. Significant comments on the regulations have impelled CAL FIRE to postpone implementation.Even though the legal requirement has been delayed, homeowners should consider working to implement an ember-free zone around their houses. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety surveyed 252 homes in the LA wildfire areas and found that when homes had >75% of their Zone 0 areas in compliance, only 9% of the homes were destroyed. Approximately half of the homes in the ‘Altadena’ fire zone were destroyed.January 2026 ~ Page 8Download These Apps

January 2026 ~ Page 11Long-Time Silver Spurs Board Member, Mary Kay Hession, RetiresWritten by Anne Edwards After years of loyal service and countless hours spent in the arena and behind the scenes, one of Silver Spurs’ most dedicated board members is officially hanging up her board credentials (but not her spurs).MaryKay's journey with Silver Spurs began when she and her husband Jack moved to ALT in 2010 from Alaska where she had ridden and showed horses for years. She immediately began participating in the club’s traditions of potlucks, ALT 4th of July parade, dental and shot clinics, obstacle play days, schooling shows, and trips to the Horse Expo. Being involved helped her find community in our group of horse-loving ALT neighbors. In summer 2012, Mary Kaye joined the Silver Spurs board, where she helped then president, Rita Mason, introduce Second Sunday dressage. In turn, Rita talked Mary Kaye into beginning monthly jump clinics for the club. By spring 2014, Mary Kaye had become Silver Spurs president following Martha Williams’ resignation due to illness. Throughout her term, and until December 2022, she championed learning and horsemanship, such as saddle fitting, microchipping, taking a horse’s vital signs, and trailer loading practice. She helped run schooling shows, the club’s booth at WIFFS yard sales, Kentucky Derby parties, and kids’ clinics, ensuring horses and riders of all ages felt welcome. From drill team practice to gaited horse clinics, she supported riders no matter what tack they preferred. She helped make the bandana maps of ALT trails that are still available today. Now, after many years of leadership and service, she is stepping down from the board. But don’t worry, this “retirement” won’t mean disappearing. You’ll still see her around the barn, cheering on new riders, and contributing that same welcoming energy that has shaped Silver Spurs into the club it is today. Mary Kaye will also continue to serve on ALT’s Equestrian Committee, to which she was appointed in 2013.Please join us in thanking her for her remarkable dedication and in wishing her many joyful rides ahead on her two grey horses, Arcturus and Izar, who she keeps at home. Dece, ber 2026 ~ Page 14Silver Spurs Holiday Potluck & Pirate Gift Exchange! The Silver Spurs wrapped up the season with a cheerful and laughter‑filled Holiday Potluck and Pirate Gift Exchange. The room was full of holiday spirit, warm conversations, and plenty of catching up as everyone settled in to celebrate together. The Pirate Gift Exchange brought its usual mix of strategy, suspense, and good‑natured mischief. Gifts were opened, “stolen,” and swapped with plenty of playful groans and laughter. January 2026 ~ Page 16Loving wife to Edward Charles Grout, married on July 1, 1960. Devoted mother to three children: Kimberly Rene Smoggie (Rescue, CA), Scott Christopher Grout (Portland , OR) and Mitchel Edward Grout (Newark, OH). Grandmother of 6: Athena Spahn, Chelsea Aaron, Nicholas Grout, Megan Grout, Zachary Grout and Madison Grout. Great Grandmother of 7. She is preceded in death by herbrothers Roland Reid, Terry Reid and Jack Reid.Born in Ashland Wisconsin to the late Robert and Marion Reid, raised in Mahtomedi Minnesota, Roberta, or Bobbie to her friends, was a strong woman who gave her strength to her family and her marriage for 65 years. Having been born in the Midwest and spending over 45 years there, she was a pragmatic, almost stoic figure of resolve and sensibility. Her common sense guided her in everything that she did. She put her entire self into making sure her family was safe, well, cared for and loved. She was a grounded woman who understood her place and her purpose in the world and applied herself to that purpose in her place. She loved music, playing the keyboard and performing with a liturgical choir. She loved gardening, yearly carving out a small plot in suburbia to raise tomatoes (as any good Minnesotan should), peas and peppers. She enjoyed drawing and writing and loved her dogs.In her later years she dedicated herself to her adopted community in Cool, California. She spent 25 years writing and publishing the local community newsletter, The Trail Views. She volunteered in the community and was a cherished member; well-loved by all who were fortunate enough to work with her and truly appreciated by those who enjoyed the fruits of her work. The house that she and Ed shared in Auburn Lake Trails was her dream; the end product of 60 years' steady, competent and devoted effort in support of her husband and her family. This is not to say that she was merely a wife and mother. This is to say that she was proudly a wife and mother; a title she wore with purpose and affection. But she was also so much more. An artist, a writer, a volunteer, a friend. Someone who believed in the goodness of others and who selflessly pushed herself to improve the lives of those around her. She loved and appreciated all those who called her a friend, Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Sister or \"Dear\".A memorial will be scheduled at a future date. Please make a donation to your favorite charity or to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in her name in lieu of flowers or donations to the family. In Deepest SympathiesIt is with a heavy heart that we share the obituary of our dear friend, Roberta Grout. Roberta was someone truly special, not only to her family, but to so many within our community. She recently retired fromthe Communications Committee after serving as a member since its creation. For more than 25 years, she gave so much to Auburn Lake Trails through her work on the anniversary books, gate board posters, and as Editor of the ALT Trail Views. Her loss is deeply felt by the committee and by our entire community.I had the privilege of working with Roberta on the Communications Committee and will always remember the knowledge she passed along, the history of Auburn Lake Trails, the background of Trail Views, and her steady guidance and thoughtful advice. She was an active member of many clubs and I know countless wonderful memories of her will be shared. Please keep Ed and her family in your prayers during this difficult time. Cards and letters may be sent to their home at: 2743 Brown Bear Trail, Cool, CA 95614Her obituary can be found at:https://www.legacy.com/legacy/roberta-groutYou are invited to sign the guestbook and share your memories with her family and friends.Rest in peace Miss Roberta.~ MargieRoberta Grace Grout1942 - 2025
