FLUSH-MOUNT HELM ASSEMBLY
IMPORTANT: This document guides our dealers, boatbuilders, and company service personnel in the proper installation or
service of our products. If you have not been trained in the recommended servicing or installation procedures for these or
similar Mercury Marine products, have the work performed by an authorized Mercury Marine dealer technician. Improper
installation or servicing of the Mercury product could result in damage to the product or personal injury to those installing or
operating the product. Always refer to the appropriate Mercury Marine service manual for component removal and installation
instructions.
NOTE: After completing installation, place these instructions with the product for the owner's future use.
Installing the Optional Flush‑Mount Helm
Use the template included with the flush‑mount helm kit to drill the necessary mounting and clearance hole in the dash.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that adequate clearance exists for the helm sensor assembly behind the dash in the chosen location.
NOTE: The following diagram is an example only. Use the template that came with the kit.

1. Install the helm assembly into the dash cutout and secure with the provided washers and nylon locking nuts. Ensure that
the seal remains in place over the mounting studs. Tighten the nylon locking nuts to the specified torque.
NOTE: It is preferred to mount the helm sensor assembly with the wires facing downward. This will occur when the
access holes are also facing downward.

2. Install the helm sensor assembly to the back of the helm with the three long screws. Rotate the steering shaft to align the
shaft on the helm sensor with the coupler on the steering wheel shaft. Using a hex bit that is minimum 5.1 cm (2.0 in.) in
length, tighten the screws to the specified torque.

3. Tighten the coupling bolt to the specified torque. This will secure the steering wheel shaft to the helm sensor shaft.

4. Slide the chrome bezel over the steering shaft and align the two countersunk holes with the threaded holes in the helm
assembly. Install the two countersunk socket head screws and tighten to the specified torque.

5. Slide the steering shaft seal over the steering shaft and secure it to the chrome bezel with the three Phillips head screws.
Tighten the screws gently.
IMPORTANT: Do not overtighten the screws.
NOTE: The key, washer, and nylon locking nut must be removed prior to installing the chrome bezel and seal.

6. Insert the key into the slot on the steering shaft. Slide the steering wheel onto the shaft with the keyway aligned properly.

7. Install the washer and nylon locking nut over the steering shaft. Tighten the nylon locking nut to the specified torque to
secure the steering wheel.
