One of the biggest concerns parents had in the previous decades was if their children were
being bullied in school. However, after a huge paradigm shift with the appearance of the internet
and social media platforms a new form of bullying has made itself known, namely cyberbullying.
As the name suggests cyberbullying is a form of abuse either through words or images which
are posted online in attempts to intimidate or threaten a victim. Normally, cyberbullying victims
range from young kids to older adults. The tipping point would be how cyberbullying victims are 3
to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide. With the sudden influx of cyberbullying cases,
solutions are needed to curb this issue. Fortunately, there are possible solutions in so many ways,
such as parental guidance and supervision, choosing the right group of friends and reporting the
abuse and violation for any sign of cyberbullying on social media.
First and foremost, one of the possible solutions to stop cyberbullying is parental supervision.
The internet should be used for specified reasons like education. For instance, parents need to take
extra care when their kids are doing homework and assignments to make sure they are not
cyberbullying or being bullied. Parents should be more vigilant and even talk to their kids about the
consequences of anything bad their kids plan on doing. By being attentive to their child’s behaviour,
parents can also detect the signs of being cyberbullied and help them overcome it. In conclusion,
parents supervision really helps kids knowing they’re always safe from the outside world's harm.
Besides, another solution to cope with this problem is that every teenager should choose their
friend wisely. This is because peers will have plenty of influence over your decisions and who you
become. For example, if we unintentionally post comments in our social media that other people
might think are hate comments, our friends will personally message us to delete the hate comments.
By this, we can avoid a controversy that will develop from the comments. On the other side of the
fence, if we hang out with friends with bad influence, we eventually get affected by it and they just
join in by throwing hate comments. It is proven that you should be aware of who your friends are and
make sure you have the same interests and goals. The right friends will bring many positive impacts
in your life. To conclude, to prevent the issue of cyber bullying, teenagers must choose their friends
wisely.
Last but not least, we as the users of social media must report the abuse or violation if there is
any sign of cyberbullying. This is due to the fact that the cyberbullies are anonymous, thus making
them feel superior to others which results in them assuming that no one can take action on their
wrongdoings. We can look at the situation where famous people such as Goo Hara who was a
korean celebrity committed suicide due to severe cyberbullying that she faced when she was alive.
This is a strong example of the wicked mindset of some people when they think they are safe
regardless how they treat other people. We can report the abuse to the social media system. After
doing so, their account will be suspended or even banned from the social media platform. If the
cyberbullying does not stop there then we as the netizens should take account to report it to the
police as well as Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). In conclusion,
we should stop cyberbullying by reporting it so that no one will experience this kind of harassment
ever again.
To sum it up, guidance and monitoring from parents, picking a good group of friends and
reporting the abuse and violation for any sign of cyberbullying on social media prove to be effective
ways to curb cyberbullying before it gets out of hand. Everyone plays an important role in solving this
issue because as the saying goes united we stand, divided we fall. Therefore, let us all take this as a
good lesson and nip this issue right in the bud.
