SECTION ONE INTRODUCTION TO HANSZEN O-WEEK 1

You’ll be hearing the word Hanszenites a lot over your next four years here at Hanszen College, your new home! We are your 2023 O-Week Coordinators: Vy Luu, Anushka Agrawal, and Lily Remington, often referred to as Team moVing cAstLe. Our warmest welcome and the most fullhearted congratulations on your acceptance to Rice University and placement into Hanszen College! We have been excitedly planning your first exhilarating week at Rice for the past seven months, and we can’t wait to meet you all on campus. Our goal is to help guide you through your transition to Rice, and aid you in building connections both within Hanszen and beyond the hedges. During your Orientation Week, or O-Week for short, we will be introducing you to a preview into your next four years while immersing you in the best Residential College at Rice. This week will be all about making new lifelong friends, preparing yourself with a balanced focus on academics and social life at Rice, officially becoming a Hanszenite, and so much more! We have put together this book as a guide for you to feel prepared coming into OWeek. Here you’ll find packing lists, dorm layouts, a sneak peak of your Advisors’ personalities, Hanszen trivia, and all the nifty little details about your favorite Residential College! HELLO HANSZENITES future 2

We are beyond excited to welcome you into the enchanting world of Hanszen. The Hanszen Family Heart (HFH) sprouts wider every year as more kind and ambitious spirits venture into the whimsical walls of Hanszen. This year’s O-Week theme is Studio Ghibli Presents: TotorO-Week! We chose this theme as the various themes and characters that make up the Studio Ghibli Universe embody the values of inclusivity, diversity, friendship, and embarking on challenges to make the world a better place— all of which we hope you will experience during your time at Rice. We can’t wait for you to join our community and make your mark on all of us. We hope to give you the support and resources you need this O-Week to thrive at Rice and Hanszen, making your mark however, whenever, and wherever you’d like. Your journey through college will be a bit like a breathtaking flight on a broomstick, where every moment is an opportunity to spread your wings and soar. So take a deep breath, summon your inner Jiji, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure at Hanszen College, a place where dreams take flight and where the magic of Studio Ghibli — and our marvelous O-Week team — will be your guiding light. We can’t wait to welcome you home in August, but in the meantime flip through this book, checkout our website (hanszen.rice.edu), shoot us a follow on Instagram (@totoroweek), and email us if you have any questions at all ([email protected])! Till we converge, stay strong guys, gals, and non-binary pals. With a big Hanszen heart, Team moVing cAstLe Vy Luu, Anushka Agrawal, Lily Remington 3

MISSION STATEMENT mission statement TotorO-Week 2023 seeks to provide New Students with a warm and welcoming community that they can call home, both at Hanszen and in the larger Rice community. With films like “Princess Mononoke", “Spirited Away", and “My Neighbor Totoro", Studio Ghibli brings a dreamlike world of poetic stories to life. Hanszen’s plot is characterized by the diversity of brilliant minds and unique identities amongst our community, akin to the myriad of mythical creatures within the Studio Ghibli universe that frame a bright and colorful world. We aim to foster an environment of care that supports all backgrounds and experiences and helps New Students find their role amidst their fellow Hanszenites. We will support New Students as they fly to their dreams like Kiki in Kiki’s Delivery Service, devote themselves to their passions like Shizuku in Whisper of the Heart, and make new friends like Mei and Totoro in My Neighbor Totoro. From our Advising Team and H-Team, we hope that students can find a safe, supporting, and open environment to show off their true character and nurture their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. To our newest Hanszenites, we aspire that the spirit of the Hanszen Family Heart can help guide you in your journey. 4

Rice’s Orientation Week is so much more than experiences you’ll find at other schools. Beyond a basic introduction to Hanszen and to Rice, O-Week will provide you with the best transition to your new life and home here. We encourage exploration in every way, from academics to extracurriculars to social life, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. We’ve handpicked our Advisors so they can be the biggest aid to you as possible as they help you adjust and familiarize yourself with Rice. They’ve undergone hours of training and given up weeks of their summers to prepare to welcome you to our Hanszen family. In addition, our H-Team, which consists of the Magisters, Residential Faculty Associates (RFAs), Residential Associates (RAs), and the College Coordinator, will serve as adult resources that you can rely on throughout your time at Hanszen. Also waiting for your arrival are our Rice Health Advisors, Diversity Facilitators, Peer Academic Advisors, and your O-Week Coordinators, who have spent the last nine months planning O-Week. We are all incredibly excited to meet you all and to help you in any way that we can! O-Week will cover everything you need to know about student life at Rice, including extracurriculars, wellbeing, safety, diversity and inclusion, our Honor Code, and of course, academics. You might be nervous about your academic transition to Rice. Please do not stress about classes! We have a ton of resources for you, including peers, professors, and the Office of Academic Advising, to help you create schedules and plans that best suit your interests and passions during your time here at Rice. Most importantly, we begin to cultivate our unique culture during O-Week, and the most important part of Hanszen culture is our community. Community manifests itself in the plethora of activities you’ll participate in along with your O-Week group, which consists of a small family unit of New Students and Advisors that will form relationships that last far beyond O-Week itself. WHAT ISO-Week? 5

This is to ensure items don’t get lost in transport. Advisors will be helping with transportation and need to know where to take items! This is not a comprehensive list or by any means a requirement. This list is just a guide to help you! 9

FLOOR PLANS All rooms at Hanszen come furnished with a twin XL bed frame and mattress, a desk with drawers, a chair, a trashcan, a dresser, and a wardrobe or closet for each person. You’ll have extra room for a futon, mini fridge, microwave, tables, rugs, etc., but be mindful — space is limited, so don’t overpack! We recommend that you contact your roommates so you’re not bringing double of anything you don’t need. The dorm facilities at Hanszen are split between two buildings: Old Section and New Section. Old Section is one of Rice’s original dorm buildings that features either doubles or quads. As the names suggest, a double is shared by two people and a quad is shared by four, split by two rooms of two people each. Students in Old Section also have shared hall bathrooms. The quads in old section could be arranged to have all 4 beds in one room and make the front room a common space. New Section is Hanszen’s newest addition and features doubles or singles. The rooms in New Section have an in-suite bathroom and shower. Most New Students will be living in a double. 10

GETTING SETTLED We couldn't be more excited for your arrival on the first day of your Rice and Hanszen journey! We've got a great week planned for you, so here are some helpful bits of information to know before you arrive on Move-In Day. Move-In Day is August 13th. If you have trouble finding Hanszen once you arrive on campus, don't hesitate to ask for help! You'll know once you make it to Hanszen because you'll be greeted by a bunch of people smiling and shouting your name. These people are your Advisors, Co-Advisors, and Affiliates! Your Advisors will take care of getting all of your belongings to your room for you, as long as you tag all your belongings with your name and room number. After you drop off your things, you'll get the chance to meet our O-Week Coordinators, Magisters, Resident Faculty Associates, Residential Associates, College Coordinator, and the Hanszen President and Chief Justice. Once you have gotten the chance to meet everyone and you have been handed your room keys, you'll get your first piece of Hanszen merch (the O-Week shirt!) and strike a pose for your first picture as a Hanszenite! Then, we'll take you up to your room where you can start unpacking your things and getting to know your roommate. Take some time to settle in— and don't worry if you suddenly realize you've left something behind! The Advisors and Gophers on our team are ready to help you get anything you may need. After beginning to settle in, we'll have lunch at South Servery, the meal hall designated for Hanszen and Weiss. Don't be afraid to sit with strangers because you'll be meeting new people all week! After lunch, you'll say goodbye to your parents. We recommend saying your real goodbyes before you get to campus — it might be a bit overwhelming once you get here. However, take all the time you need! Remember that your loved ones are only a phone call away (and don't forget to call them from time to time!). You're about to have a busy, fun-filled week, and we promise that it'll be well worth it! 11

SECTION TWO O-WEEK PERSONNEL 13

What is an O-Week group? You may have noticed in your rooming packet that you were assigned to an “O-Week group.” O- Week groups are generally composed of three Advisors, a Co-Advisor, and a small group of New Students. In other words, your O-Week group is the first new group of people you will meet at Rice! The transition to college is scary, but your O-Week family will be a constant support group for you. Its members will become your first friends at Rice — a small sample of the diverse student body you will encounter during your time here. During O-Week, they'll be the first people you see in the morning and the last people you will see at night. You'll bond and create inside jokes, come up with terrible nicknames for each other, and develop a sincere and close relationship that signifies the establishment of a true family. And that isn't even the end of it. Throughout the year, many O-Week groups will meet up for lunch, go out for late-night food, or celebrate a group member's birthday. Oftentimes, members will support each other at sporting events, performances, and presentations. Never hesitate to fall back on your O-Week family. They are here for you through life’s ups and downs! As the Family College, Hanszen values building genuine, lasting relationships with others, and that starts with O-Week. We can't wait for you to join our family! What is an Advisor/Co-Advisor? An O-Week Advisor at Rice is a current student who will be there for you throughout your experience during O-Week and beyond. The goal of an Advisor is to integrate you into the Rice community and residential college system as smoothly as possible. The transition to life as a college student is not always easy, but your Advisors are here to help you with whatever you may need. Whether you're looking for academic advice, a devoted and kind listener, or just have general questions about what resources to take advantage of while at Rice, you're sure to find what you need with the help of an Advisor. Your O-Week group Advising Team will consist of two current student Advisors from Hanszen, one Affiliate, and one Co-Advisor. An Affiliate is a Hanszenite who is an Advisor but also has a unique role, and a Co-Advisor is an Advisor who comes from one of the other residential colleges outside of Hanszen, and they also give you a chance to expand your social network. This great group of people will support you throughout your first year, and in many cases, through your entire time at Rice. Advisors come from many different backgrounds and have a great deal of experience they'd love to share, so make sure to ask about what they've learned during their time as a proud Rice Owl. Advisors are truly great mentors, confidants, and friends who will be huge sources of encouragement and support as you transition to college life at Rice. O-WEEK Lingo 14

TYPE OF AFFILIATES WHAT'S AN AFFILIATE? You may notice that you have an Affiliate attached to your group. An Affiliate is essentially another Advisor who also serves a special role during O-Week, sometimes having additional responsibilities. The various types of Affiliates you will encounter at Hanszen are listed below! Peer Academic Advisor (PAA) The Office of Academic Advising has chosen a special group of students to be your guides to academics at Rice. They have been broadly trained in various areas of academics like general graduation requirements, specific classes, research opportunities, studying abroad, guidance for students on any Pre-Professional track, and any other topic that refers to academics. There is a team of four O-Week PAAs who are specifically trained to assist you, though Hanszen also has YearLong PAAs that can further guide you after O-Week is over. They will coordinate advising sessions and personal meetings to provide you with academic advice throughout the week. They know a lot about academics at Rice, and if they can't answer your question off the top of their head, they will be sure to find you the answer! Diversity Facilitator (DF) The Office of Multicultural Affairs introduces new Rice students to addressing issues regarding diversity, racism, sexism, homophobia, and intolerance through diversity workshops that occur during O-Week. The workshops are designed to engage New Students with a code of civility and give them the tools to have a dialogue across differences. These Affiliates have been extensively trained to facilitate diversity workshops and will be present throughout the week and year to answer any questions about Rice’s diverse culture and social groups. Rice Health Advisor (RHA) The Rice Wellbeing and Counseling Center has trained a group of students on a variety of health and wellbeing topics, from nutrition to sexuality to various other physical, mental, psychological, and spiritual issues. RHAs are students’ link to these facilities at Rice. They also have various medical supplies, like bandages, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, earplugs, gauze, hydrocortisone, tampons, condoms, and more handy at any time for your needs. Hanszen also has a special RHA locker, which is always stocked with additional supplies! There are five RHAs on the O-Week team, but many more at Hanszen that you will meet throughout the year. Athletic Liaison (AL) Athletes at Rice have very busy schedules, balancing their classes, practices, extracurriculars, and social activities. The Athletic Liaison is a student athlete who has committed themselves to helping New Student athletes effectively transition into their life at Rice. Whether it’s success on the field, in the classroom, or within their college, the Athletic Liaison understands what needs to be done to ensure that student athletes achieve their goals. Gopher The Gophers serve as the trusted helpers for the O-Week Coordinators to ensure the week is as successful as possible. Whenever they need supplies, or whenever New Students need additional supplies, the Gophers will rush to Target, Kroger, or to the ends of the Earth to get them. STRIVE Liaison The SAFE Office works with our STRIVE Liaisons to raise awareness to Hanszenites about issues pertaining to sexual assault and health. STRIVE, or Students Transforming Rice Into a Violence-Free Environment, has an overarching goal of being able to provide resources to students as their interpersonal networks grow to ensure a comfortable and supportive campus for all. They undergo extensive training to provide confidential aid and will connect Hanszenites to resources inside and outside of Rice, if needed. Undergraduate International Orientation Advisor (UIOA) The Office of International Students and Scholars hosts the Undergraduate International Orientation (UIO) for international New Students on F-1 and J-1 visas to understand these visa regulations, the role of the OISS, and how to be supported during their time at Rice. UIO Advisors are international students who will act as a guide during your first few days at Rice prior to O-Week, and will help make sure you have a smooth UIO experience. Student Maintenance Representative (SMR) Hanszen's SMR is our liaison to Rice Housing & Dining. In this capacity, they provide support to both students and staff in order to ensure work orders are filed and fulfilled, adjust beds based on students' requests, and deal with any various maintenance issues that may arise. The SMR is also available to answer questions regarding H&D policies, to help connect students with various H&D staff, and be generally responsive towards students' needs. Rice Emergency Medical Services Technician (REMS) The Rice University Emergency Medical Services trains students across campus as EMTs to provide quality emergency medical care for people on campus. REMS has rapid responses to calls, provides standby coverage at special events on Rice University’s campus, and hosts courses on emergency medical care for the Rice community to become officially EMT trained and certified. Being just a call away, if you are ever in need of help no matter how big or small, reaching out to REMS will provide you with quality and compassionate care to get through any situation you may run into! 15

Growing up around Houston’s Asiatown in Bellaire, Vy Luu knows the best eats in the city. Always proud of her Vietnamese heritage, you can see her great ideas in action at all of the Vietnamese Student Association’s amazing events! When she isn’t dealing with organizing the multitudes of VSA’s activities, you can find her whipping up some tasty drinks as our favorite bobarista at Rice’s very own East West! From feeding you food, to giving the best advice, everyone knows Vy as a “Mom Friend.” But to many of us, she’s more than that. An attentive listener full of wisdom, you can come to her with anything, and leave the conversation with her feeling much better. If you ever feel down, expect a warm, loved-filled baked good from Vy. Tastes so good, you might even start calling her Granny Vy. While she’s not baking her stress away, she’s building it up by pursuing ten bajillion majors: Health Sciences and Sociology majors on the Pre-Law track, along with a Medical Humanities minor. Don’t forget, she’s doing this, all while being y’all’s Coord, so say thank you Granny Vy! Even though we call her Granny, don’t think she won’t teach y’all whippersnappers a thing or two! Catch her at the volleyball courts, where she’ll teach you how to play volleyball or improve your skills. Whatever it may be, don’t feel intimidated by Vy; just like Totoro, she may be tall in stature, but she’s a playful and kind soul who will always lend a helping hand. Richard Gao, Baker ‘25; Irene Wang, Baker ‘25 VY LUU COORDINATOR HEAL & SOCI HANSZEN ‘25 she/her Born in India, grew up in France, and now hailing from Champaign, Illinois (downgrade), Anushka Agrawal is somehow both a wannabe biker mom (check out her ever-growing tattoo sleeve!) and one of the most caring and supportive people you will meet at Rice. Majoring in Bioengineering, this senior is grinding out her final year at Rice by spending copious amounts of time at the Biosciences Research Center beefing with little mice who like biting her. What’s the BRC? Don’t worry, Anushka will make sure to tell you, along with every single drop of tea she’s heard in the past 24 hours. Most of that will be her spilling all the drama from her own life, though. From going out of her way to set you up on dates (which she will then stalk you on) to her obsession with Twilight (she’s only seen it twice but swears she’s team Edward), Anushka never fails to keep you on her toes. As Anushka best puts it herself, “I confuse myself too.” Though she might live off campus, Anushka can be easily spotted working as a docent at Skyspace, Rice’s premier public art installation, or at her fav study spot, second floor of the business school (major red flag but we’ll let it slide), wearing her signature outfit of cargo pants, an oversized hoodie, and massive white headphones. Even though she might not hear anything when her headphones are on (she can be oblivious), Anushka will always take them off to listen to anyone who needs help. She’s so good at it, in fact, that she’s even a Rice Health Advisor! This stress-baker (her brownies and key lime pies are delicious!) also loves spending time at Hanszen, where she runs both the Off-Campus Committee and HEATS (Hanszen Eats). Anushka is so excited to be an O-Week Coordinator and to welcome you to your new home, Hanszen (the best college!) Heart pounding in her ears, eyes looking straight, she is counting down the seconds for her teammates to launch her to secure Hanszen’s third victory in a row in Beer Bike. Lily Remington will also secure you having the greatest O-Week ever at Hanszen! While she’s off the track, you can catch her editing articles for the Rice Asian Studies Review Journal, studying antibiotic resistance in the Shamoo lab, and designing merch for all you new Hanszenites to wear. This rising junior is double majoring in Biosciences (with a concentration in Cell Biology and Genetics) and Transnational Asian Studies on the Pre-Med track. She frequents Kraft Hall as her go-to study spot, but studying hard for her exams isn't the only activity you'll find her doing there, as you can catch her playing Mario Kart or Wii Sports at 5AM with just as much diligence. HOWEVER, beware of challenging her in a round of Mario Party because she will destroy you with no mercy. But fear not, as she will treat you to her BEST taco spots in Houston to make up for your devastating loss. Despite navigating the roads of campus as a Tour Guide, Lily is unable to navigate the streets of her hometown, Las Vegas, Nevada, via an automobile (she doesn’t even have her permit yet, but ask her if she got it during O-Week). Taking from her namesake Remy the Rat (she thinks Ratatouille is a cinematic masterpiece), you can’t let this Zipcar passenger princess loose in an H-Mart. She WILL come back with a literal trunkload of groceries to “chef it up” for her friends (ask her, she has pics). With the help of Starbucks iced shaken espressos and the Taylor Swift Eras Tour setlist, she has worked so hard these past few months in ensuring you have the most welcoming O-Week experience offered at Rice! #HFH #peach #makeherguessmariosoundtrackssheknowsthemall Scott Koh, Sid Rich ‘25; Mirely Nieto, Sid Rich ‘25; Krish Kumar, Sid Rich ‘26; Christine Wu, Hanszen ‘26; Maggie Xia, Hanszen ‘26 LILY REMINGTON COORDINATOR H ASIA & BIOS HANSZEN ‘25 she/her 17

Presi d ent & Chief Justice Alan Tapper From the ruins of Old New Section to the presidency of Hanszen College, Alan has been consistent enough for us to basically reuse this bio. This is a good thing, because the man in the Cheez-It sweatshirt is one of the nicest Hanszenites around. If you ever need to find him, this senior from Atlanta, Georgia is easy to spot: he’s always wearing one of two Beer Bike shirts and probably defending his record at the pingpong table. A Math/Computer Science major and LaTeX enthusiast, Alan types about 5 times faster than he speaks, which is lucky because he sends at least 5 emails a day to the Hanszen listserv. When you have questions about advanced mathematics like algebraic topology, juggling, speedcubing, and all things Hanszen, you can always rely on Alan to answer them. Kian Robinson, Hanszen ‘24; Arnav Burudgunte, Hanszen ‘24 he/him PRESIDENT | COMP & MATH | HANSZEN ‘24 Connor Taylor He shoots, he scores, he doesn’t play basketball! Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Connor Taylor is an avid Grizzlies fan. Connor is an incoming junior at Hanszen College majoring in Business with a concentration in Finance. When he isn’t catching a sports game in Upper Commons, you can find him shouting rhymes on stage in Herring 100 performing as a member of Rice’s premiere improv team, Spontaneous Combustion (come to Spoco shows to see him drop some fire bars). Connor also serves as Chief Justice at Hanszen where he leads Hanszen's Justice League, oversees the general wellbeing and safety of the college, and organizes elections, room draw, and parking draw. As an ex-child model/actor, Connor actually models as the dictionary photo of “southern gentleman”; if you find the correct edition and show him, you get 20 gold stars! Whether you want to watch a sports game, Hamilton, or Survivor together or just need someone to listen, Connor is so excited to welcome Hanszen’s incoming class. My L ittle Pony o : A New Z ENer a ti on Krish Kumar (DF) Driving at breakneck speed on the Houston freeway, belting out Cold Heart (hitting those high notes–sometimes), he is on his way to discover a new food spot. Which he will be obsessed with and not stop talking about it for the next 3-5 business days (guaranteed ✅). Krish Kumar is from Sid Richardson College currently majoring in Statistics and Computer Science. When he is not exploring the greater Houston area, you will never struggle finding him within the hedges. He will either be attending meetings SERVING as Senator at Sid or for the Student Association’s Blanket Tax Committee, but when he isn’t, you will likely hear his voice bouncing off the buildings in the Academic Quad while giving a Campus Tour. This rising sophomore from Denver, Colorado (ask him about the myColorado app) will be one of the most entertaining people you will ever meet at Rice. With his endless amount of stories, expressive reactions, and contagious cackle, you will never have a dull day with Krish as your Co-Advisor! You go to Sharetea for boba and what do you see? A ghost dressed in all black and a bucket hat, surrounded by five empty cups and fishing out the leftover lychee of her sixth. Hmm, maybe you’re just seeing things? You go on with your day and wander around campus to find a study spot. Before you know it, you end up in front of a looming Kraft Hall. You open the heavy doors and, wait, there the ghost is again! She’s still in all black– though it appears she’s replaced her bucket hat with a beanie–and she’s working on the Thresher crossword puzzle (little do you know, this is her third crossword of the day). Okay, new study spot it is then; maybe you’ll have some luck at Fondy. You head to the second floor to look for empty desks and what do you know, there she is again, sitting at the CAPC tables! The ghost is… editing someone’s paper? A ghost but also an intellectual, it seems. You’re out of study places by now, though, so you decide to confront this ghost once and for all… Only to realize it was no ghost after all! It is Hannah Kim, a junior Psychology major and Medical Humanities minor hailing from Kirkland, Washington. When she’s not doubling as a could-be ghost, you can find her napping, scavenging for snacks in her friends’ rooms, playing the loveliest pieces on her violin, or watching a horror movie. She is ever the conversationalist, what with all of her inquisitive questions, so whether you want to talk to her about music (alt rock, Seventeen, and the like), her ex-Word Hunt days, or mental health and wellbeing, she's all ears. Even if you mistake her as a ghost when you first meet her, you will soon realize Hannah is a most fuzzy-hearted human and it is wonderful you’ll get to call her your O-Week Advisor :) Grace Kwon, Sid Rich, '25 she/her ADVISOR | PSYC | HANSZEN ‘25 20

Andrew Bare This photo of Andrew appears in most encyclopedias, but you have to look under “mechanical engineer.” He is the former Chief Engineer of Rice Eclipse, a power user of the OEDK Makerspace, and a constant victim of heat transfer homework. It’s in his blood - most of the Bares of his hometown Spencer, Iowa share his passion for toiling away at complex calculations and heavy machinery. To find Andrew, look for the “enjineer” shirt, the Iowa State hat, good pants, and cup of coffee; he’s either in Upper Commons or at a rocket launch site. If you need engineering wisdom, niche music recommendations, or a helpful friend with a pickup truck, join him on a midnight skateboard ride. We promise it won’t disappoint. Well then you’re just in luck because Maggie Xia is all that and more! Maggie is a sophomore majoring in Anthropology, but don’t let that fool you; she is also a *woman in STEM* who is pursuing Pre-Med and is passionate about the Medical Humanities. On her way to becoming America’s sweetest & friendliest doctor, Maggie never stops sending out love and good vibes to everyone around her: from late-night talks, to being the biggest mental health advocate on campus (the best Rice Health Advisor!), to always saying yes to spontaneous adventures, she’s a friend that will ride or die for you. As if she couldn’t get any better, Maggie is a selfproclaimed foodie who loves to try new cuisines (best food date partner!!). On weekdays, you can find her working at Rice’s on-campus boba shop, East-West Tea, when she’s not constantly taking polaroid pictures of her friends. With an immaculate music taste of Taylor Swift and K-Pop, she is ready to show you her terrible dance moves. What’s not to love at this point? With her 3XL iPad, circle glasses, and huge heart, Maggie Xia is the bestest friend and Advisor you could ever ask for. Congrats! You just hit the jackpot in the Advisor draw ;)! B ig Chihi r o 6 Hannah Zhang You hear from the depths of Lovett…”MY STOMACH HURTSSS!” If you hear this, then you know Hannah Zhang is around. This spunky little snack machine hails from Palo Alto, California, and is a sophomore from Lovett majoring in CS (and minoring in the art of chocolate consumption). Also, you WILL hear her complain about CS. However, you may not beat her in a game of ping pong, or much less volleyball (she plays club!). To celebrate her constant wins, she also has constant needs. Namely, if she doesn’t have a yummy treat every couple of hours, her condition will deteriorate. To improve her condition, feed her chocolate or online shop with her! Don’t be afraid to come to her for life advice, good vibes, food recommendations, or help with COMP 140/COMP 182. Our Hannah is super chill, wholesome, fun and is one of the few people at Rice who has a great work-life balance. So, if you're looking to destress over Target runs or ping pong rounds in Commons or literally anything, you know who to invite. If you're not looking for advice from her and are just interested in a free drink, go find her at Audrey's—she’s becoming an expert barista :) This 5’3 and ¾ (she’ll have you know) goblin will be the sweetest and most caring Advisor evaaa! As a transfer student originally from Pleasant Grove, Alabama, AZ has quickly found her own community at Rice and is super excited to help each of you find your niche as well. Double majoring in Biosciences and Linguistics, AZ is always willing to talk about anything related to language learning (she is SO good at Japanese, Korean, and even knows some Spanish and French!), sociolinguistics, immunology, and third gen kpop/kr&b/khiphop lore. As y’all’s Diversity Facilitator, AZ is deeply involved in promoting diversity– even within her majors. As a strong supporter of all women in STEM and also enjoys connecting to her own multi-cultural background and others through how various aspects of identity affect language. AZ is also the Head of the Diversity and Inclusion Sub-Committee for Rice SA and is a part of the Equity Council, so she will love to help you facilitate any difficulties you may come across as you adjust to college life (PLEASE reach out, that’s what she’s here for!!). In her spare time, you may find AZ with her blanket asleep on the floor of any building on campus, watching Tiny Meat Gang, or practicing to have the fastest women’s chug time at Hanszen! AZ is the funniest person you will ever meet and will never fail to make you laugh. She’s always down to take a walk no matter how far, go to the Hoot, or go off campus to get boba or food (specifically anything with ranch or barbeque sauce). Ethan Nava Maldonado Are you looking for the biggest Taylor Swift & Lana Del Ray stan, ultimate karaoke show performer, roast battle master, and peak OWeek dad? If so, local Hanszen Houstonian Ethan Nava Maldonado is your person! Even though he has some character flaws like putting avocado spread on pizza, he’s the kind of friend that is down to talk to you about anything one moment and get down on the dance floor the next. You can definitely depend on Ethan to show you around, as long as it doesn’t involve driving (he’s yet to get his license). Since he likely holds the record for switching majors the most times in his time at Rice, he can talk to you about 1) being Pre-Med, CS, AND Business, and 2) how to find what major makes you the happiest. Did we mention he’s only a sophomore?? This NOW Operations Research major is ready to advise you in any situation you need. The best way to understand Ethan truly is to experience him in person, so definitely prepare yourself for the most chaotic, funny, and infectiously loveable Advisor you could have! Pro tip for if you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to talk, don’t mention to Peter the following things: biking, any Scandinavian country, ranking West Wing episodes, urban planning, Formula One, curling and of course anything and everything Hanszen. Do talk to Peter if you are looking for late night advice, a spike ball partner, someone to speed run a NYT crossword with, a critical analysis of any award winning movie, or honestly just someone to talk about anything with. Anti -Chihi r o b y T a yl o r S p i r it Aidan Silva Only four awards away from EGOT status, Aidan is pretty much a cultural luminary. This absolute gem hails from yours truly– Houston, TX (baby). A lover of the arts, Aidan is a connoisseur of “fine” music, if you’d count Charli XCX. He continues to give back to the art community as a creative at the Moody Center for the Arts. This bachelor’s order at Chaus is a Bachelorette which speaks to the sweet nature of this amazing sophomore. You’ll never meet a Duncaroo with more Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent. He can quote both A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara AND Adore Delano on command– and he's an orgo god, what can’t he do? (drive). Or that one time in the Dora costume. As a Mechanical Engineering and Art History double major, Marc hails from Corpus Christi, but really prides himself for having a volcano in the backyard of his childhood home in the Philippines (his go-to fun fact). You can catch him at the Skyspace or the Moody, waxing poetic about the arts, strolling around campus with a tote bag with an unread book, a Nalgene bottle, a phone on 7%, and plant clippings from around town. At Hanszen, find him nestled deep in Upper Commons, working on a problem set or watching ethereal, industrial, and funky music videos on the big screen, waiting for the next Houston concert. With the most contagious smile on campus, Marc will warm your heart and make you feel at home. If you ever need someone to make you laugh or someone to lend a hand (he singlehandedly cleaned Hanszen’s storage), Marc is your guy. Somya Mittal (STRIVE) From the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, introducing Somya “Sommers” Mittal! She’s a Hanszen junior double majoring in Cognitive Sciences and Psychology with a minor in Biochemistry on the Pre-Grad track. Somya is ready to help you with any and all questions you may have about the Center for Civic Leadership, research in the Texas Medical Center, and STRIVE. At Rice, you can find her speed walking to her labs, wasting her Tetra on chocolate croissants at Brochstein, or falling asleep in the Hanszen game room. She’s always down for downforacross.com, random song recommendations, clever word games, or showing you pictures of her cute (crusty) little white dog. If you’re in need of some amazing chai, comforting words, or even just a quality hug, look no further than Somya! In turn you can teach her how to ride a bike or open plastic water bottles for her (she has no grip strength – it's a problem, we are concerned for her). As the current Secretary of Hanszen, Isabella is the embodiment of the Hanszen Family Heart, yassifying all the emails in your inbox. She may have the TV taste of an old woman (she LOVES Downton Abbey), but she’s definitely not boring! Isabella is a current member of Rice’s best and only comedy improv group, Spontaneous Combustion, so you can always rely on her quick wit and hilarious facial expressions to send any room of people into instant giggles. Be sure to ask for her CompSci Major Harry Styles or Chronic Smoker Donald Duck impressions, previously big hits with the Spoco crowds! When she’s not working in the theatre or writing her heart out, she’s always down to thrift, game, crochet, or have late-night talks (her room is the prime hangout spot). Ha r ry Po tter and the De a thly Howl - l ows Shreyan Das Oh, how I wish I could be a freshman, just for the slight chance that I would have Shreyan Das as my O-Week father. Wow. What doesn’t Slay-an do? I don’t know. I once witnessed Shreyan Das code an entire website to raise money for homeless Zebras (in under an hour). He’s a renowned trumpet player who played for Duke Ellington, a nationally ranked Football Manager currently being recruited by Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barca, Pub employee, ex-TA, egg connoisseur, the best animal noise imitator, and last but not least, a former spelling bee champion. Be sure to ask him about the “Drain Gang,” I hear they make some fine melodies! He’s also a huuuuuuuuuge fractal guy! Fractals! I mean, wow. It’s hard to put into words just how much Shreybae brings to the table. He is truly so selfless and will always be willing to help you with anything. He is wise beyond his years and a great resource if you ever have any questions about anything from COMP homework, to where to get the best food, to how to deal with a tough situation you’re facing. There is no doubt that Shreyan will be the perfect companion as you enter your journey at Rice. Aside from being an academic beast, she’ll be the first to tell you how much she loves ~vintage~ music like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones - her favorite song is Beast of Burden! Speaking of vintage, Valerie might also take you to shop for goodies at the Archi Market, which she helped start! That’s not all though…. she’s also a well-seasoned traveler, so be sure to ask about her travel experiences. Sophia Wilson (AL) Hey everyone, as Sophia comes from across the pond, do yourself a favor and read the rest of her bio with the coolest English accent possible (literally how she talks). Sophia is a sophomore Mechanical Engineering student and a crosscountry/track & field student athlete. Unfortunately, the athlete part of the student-athlete title is currently hibernating due to her incredible somersault bed stunt (I’m practically Livvy Dunne), which unfortunately resulted in her crashing to the floor. If you can’t tell, she is an adventurous, impulsive person, that’s a blast to be around: so get ready for some crazy fun times during O-Week. Sophia loves to work out (surprise right?), play tennis, cook, find new restaurants in Houston, go to art galleries, fall off skateboards, play with my seven dogs, and mess around with my friends. She also love biking (literally always on the bike track), and would love to take anyone out on a ride. Beer Bike (the best day of the year) is sooner than you know, and we’re always recruiting for our powerhouse bike team. As a student representative at Hanszen for the Sophomore class, and can’t wait to get to know everyone! As a Philosophy and Computational and Applied Mathematics major, he’s ready to talk about anything from Socrates to quantum computing. He’s the best (worst) person to go to if you want a philosophical convo lol. You can find him studying around Brochstein or hitting up Piada for lunch ($8 dollar student discounts ). If you’re lucky enough to have him as your O-Week father, get ready to have an amazing introduction to Rice and maybe practice up your jianzi skills, which he will surely introduce to you. K iki Do You L o ve Me Beck Edwards Meet Beck, the epitome of blonde ambition – studious, fit, and always rocking a pair of colorful socks that would even make Elton John jealous. This Chicago native is a Co-Advisor from Duncan, and you’re in for a treat. When he’s not stressing over deciding on a major (he’s currently Electrical Engineering but who knows how long that’ll last), Beck somehow manages to be the most friendly, easy going guy on campus. His lighthearted demeanor makes one thing certain: Beck knows how to have fun. He is quite literally the human equivalent of a unicorn with abs. Between hitting the books and crushing it in the gym (I once saw him bench press a textbook so hard, it practically turned into a kindle), Beck is always up for a new adventure. If you're lucky, you might catch Beck playing the violin or jamming to his electric guitar. His passion for music is evident in his skillful playing, even if his speaking voice is a bit monotone. Don't worry, it only adds to his unique charm. But this isn’t the best thing about Beck. That, my friend, belongs to his magnificent, extraordinary CapCut video editing skills. Although he’s just a rising sophomore, Beck is already a team lead for Rice Eclipse—the guy is going places. Maybe he’ll be the next Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. Or maybe he’ll just keep collecting dragons in Dragonvale. Who knows? Ryker Dolese, Duncan '26; Justin Xia, Duncan '26 he/him CO-ADVISOR | ELEC | DUNCAN ‘26 Valentina Osorio Slay! So one of your advisors is Valentina Osorio. This California baddie has the voice of an angel (shoutout Nocty!) and the baking skills of a chemistry legend. That’s right, she's majoring in Chemistry! AND Earth Environmental and Planetary Sciences (EEPS)! When she’s not making topological graphs of the Grand Canyon, she’s baking her third vegan chocolate chip banana bread of the month. It’ll blow your mind #volcano. Chatting with Valentina is sure to bring a smile to your face but only after the initial confusion of figuring out what she means by something like “mushroom mosh pit.” You’ll want to hang out with her all the time, but make sure to catch her while the sun is still out because this gym baddie goes to bed at 9 PM. Whether it’s watching Strawberry Shortcake, cooking brunch, dancing, or simply enjoying each other's vibes around a servery table, this girl is one of the sweetest, funniest, and most supportive people you will ever meet. Dillon Akerman (Gopher) Dillon (dilly) Akerman is a Junior at Hanszen, which might surprise you because he is SO baby. Hailing from Mansfield, Texas he knows all about the cowboying (will tell you how the Dallas Cowboys should be called the Arlington Cowboys) and the barbecuing and the various other rootin-tootin Texas traditions. Dillion hits things at Rice, specifically drums (he is what we call a MUSI, which is short for Music…). This means he usually does things like orchestra and learns about wild topics such as Hildegard von Bingen. He also somehow knows how to play every instrument and knows every song (ask him if the Triangle is hard to play and get ready for a 20 minute speech). Dilly does many things outside of hitting drums, such as lifting big things at the Rice Rec. Dylan is sweet like honey and strong like iron; he is charismatic like a bumblebee and whimsical like a lollipop. Talk to him about his car, his drums, his poker endeavors, or his passion for being fashionably late to class due to his Chaus cold brew addiction! I’m sure he is excited to meet all of his New Students and if you are a member of his progeny, buckle up and prepare yourself for a fun-filled O-Week and beyond! If you’re ever feeling stressed from midterms, she can cheer you up by entertaining you with her middle school boy-esque humor and sick moves (the worm? She’s got you). Even though she’s not afraid to roast you at all hours of the day, Cecilia has the best shoulders to lean on (from those hours at the gym!) and an even bigger heart to comfort you whenever you need it. Even though she may lose you once or twice during O-Week (she loses everything), you’ll be welcomed to Hanszen by the girl with the biggest Hanszen Family Heart. Howl t o T r a in Your Dr a g on Alex Kim I would bet all the money in my left sock that you’ve never met a man that likes milk-related things as much as mister Alexander Kim. Ice cream, cheese, yogurt, you name it. Alex is eating it. But despite his love for dairy, you would often see this 6 foot 9 (actually 6’2) stud immersed in complex thought in Fondren Library. The combination of his brain and brawn might make him appear intimidating at first glance, but trust me, once you get to know him, he’s one of the most down to earth people you will ever meet. Born and raised in California, Alex is a Computer Science major here at Rice and a part time retail therapist. When he’s not worrying over how hard his homework is or what to blow his non-existent money on, you can find him at Costco eating 4 hotdogs. You heard me, 4 plain hotdogs. Being from the legendary Baker College, Alex also has some of the strongest Christmas spirit that you’ll ever see. But aside from the shenanigans that he gets up to, Alex is one of the most hilarious yet reliable people on Rice campus. He’s always there to join you for a good time with anything fun, stupid, or just to talk. Prepare yourself for an amazing O-Week because you lucked out with this one-of-a-kind Advisor. Henry Tran, Duncan ‘25 he/him CO-ADVISOR | COMP | BAKER ‘25 Amanda Hogan Green Goddess! That’s actually the name of a salad I get from Sprouts, but it describes this plant loving Biosciences major and Data Science minor perfectly. From sunny Los Angeles, California, Amanda appreciates the fine things — peanut butter, dumb jokes, and of course Studio Ghibli. When she’s not captaining the Women’s Beer Bike team (to victory — HFH!!) or heading the Space Club (she’s literally out of this world), you can find her laying in a Hanszen hammock listening to The Growlers. She has amazing playlists, I am her #1 Spotify stalker, and I’m sure you’ll jump on that train. Amanda is amazing! She’s one of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve ever met, but more importantly she laughs at all your jokes — like all of them. For 3 years, she’s been my go-to for advice, adventure, and outfit approval. I love her, and you no doubt will too! Mainavi Reddy, Hanszen '24 she/her ADVISOR | BIOS | HANSZEN ‘24 30

Nathan Morriss Howdy New Hanszenites! Y’all ain’t ready to have Nathan Morriss as one of your Advisors! Hailing from Texarkana, Texas (the city isn’t sure if it’s in Texas or Arkansas - and neither are we), he’s about as country as they come with his cowboy boots and love of duck hunting. In fact, his passport application got rejected because he never got issued an actual birth certificate - that’s the type of country he’s from! On campus, you can find this junior Mechanical Engineering major putting his knowledge into practice as a Rice Bikes mechanic. He’s also demonstrating his Rice Center for Engineering Leadership skills as a manager at Rice Bikes. He is ~speed~ on a bicycle, and he has more bikes than one can keep track of. (While he is supposedly flipping them, he hasn’t actually made a single deal). If he’s not at Rice Bikes, you can probably find him at the Rec getting gainz or reminiscing on his high school glory days by swimming laps. All jokes aside, you lucked out with Nathan as your Advisor. He is kind, funny, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Nathan is supportive and a good listener, making him the perfect advisor to welcome you home to Hanszen. Shannon McGill, McMurtry ‘24; Drew Moore, Weiss ‘24; Trevor Tobey, Hanszen ‘26 he/him ADVISOR | MECH | HANSZEN ‘25 Melissa Tariq Rodriguez Have you ever wanted a bestie who always advocates for your right to a nap? This Business and Social Policy Analysis double major has got your back! Hailing from Pearland, Texas, Melissa Tariq Rodriguez loves all things summer, boba, Taylor Swift, and chisme. Be sure to ask her about thriving at Rice without an ID, but look away if you catch her and a friend riding a bike that’s clearly meant for one person. Despite her tendency to wake up late and feverishly consume YA fiction when she should be writing essays, she always manages to pull through. Just like you can always come to this Puerto Rican and Pakistani queen for honest and helpful advice, you can always count on her to sacrifice her phone storage to snap pictures of your fun times together. You'll likely see her at many exciting events around campus, as she's a member of Rice Program Council (and therefore great at using a popcorn machine). So if you’re up for a year full of laughs, you couldn’t have gotten luckier. Melissa can’t wait to make you feel at home at Hanszen and Rice! Pr incess Monono - p o ly Maya Adhikari This 4’0 fireball of energy will never lack the time or patience to lend an ear to you. Meet Maya Adhikari, your local raging Hanszenite Brownie! Rollin’ in from Tucson, Arizona, this Polish and Indian junior from Brown College loves to complain about the Brown Executive Cabinet, but then signed up for yet another role as Treasurer! As a Political Science and English major, this Pre-Law will never let you forget it. Her hobbies include long walks, searching for food, and talking in a competitive landscape (I think she calls it “Speech & Debate?”). If you’re lucky enough to catch Maya not working, you’re likely to find her in a Starbucks or in Hanszen Commons, wearing her everyday uniform of crop top + short shorts + birks that show off the dawgs. Though she’s very easily distracted and sometimes quite gullible, Maya’s an amazing Advisor, mostly because she’ll push aside her many problems to be there for you. Maya always knows how to make you laugh, serves the tea, and has the biggest heart!! Specifically, peoples’ dogs? This Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology major from Carmel, Indiana loves containing his dogs within utterly radiant orange crocs. And my oh my, those dogs have gone places. When those dogs are not sprinting across the intramural fields playing ultimate frisbee, they are on his bike, zooming around the bike track like Lightning McQueen (kachow kachow), or just propped up on Hanszen Commons couches. Suraj Chandramouli is also a hardcore Pre-Med, although he’ll try and deny it at all costs. Despite all of these commitments, Suraj will always be down to blunder his queen against you in chess, or blow you out in KanJam (think cornhole but frisbee). But to be completely honest, Suraj is an extremely amazing person, and is the best O-Week Advisor you could ever imagine. If you ever feel down, Suraj will always be there for you, whether it is to give you advice, or brighten your day with his wit, or both! Justin Dang (Gopher) Meet Justin Dang, the Biosciences and Business (Pre-Med) major who can cook up a storm, journal his way through life, and binge-watch medical dramas faster than you can say “stat!” He’s a K-pop lover and Seventeen’s biggest fanboy, but don’t let that fool you-this Hanszen sophomore is a force to be reckoned with. When he’s not studying, you can find him tending to his infinite skincare collection, which is almost as extensive as his music playlist. Just a fair warning-although Justin loves his car, he could write a research paper on how much he despises the Houston roads. However, he always does manage to get his passengers to their destination in one piece and will always make sure they feel comfortable and secure. You can say he’s the designated driver of the friend group-the one you can count on to get everyone home safe and sound. Born and raised in Parkland, Florida, Justin has many "Florida Man" stories that will give you a good laugh. Let’s say that they involve roach spray, nunchucks, loud music, and alligators. And in case you were wondering, Justin is 5’6 and dances in Rice’s K-Pop group: BASYK. Although he did perform “2 Baddies” by NCT 127, we can definitely say he does NOT live up to the name of this song or have a Porsche. Sorry, that’s just how he rolls. She's the most down (and down bad) person ever, so don't hesitate to ask her to go to Chaus, watch a game, go on a walk, or do literally anything anytime. She's also an Eco Rep! Ask her to hug a tree with you! But beware, even if you recycle your whole dinner plate like she did, she will come for you if you forget to compost. In the middle of Academic Quad? Chances are the source of that noise is your new O-Week CoAdvisor, Alice Zhou! 90% of the time, Alice will spot you within a crowd and run to you with open arms before you even realize what’s happening. Hailing all the way from sunny San Diego, California, this Junior from Martel College will make it her life’s mission to make sure you have the best O-Week possible! You’d be hard pressed to find a more dedicated Advisor than Alice. The only thing bigger than her drive for being the best O-Week Advisor ever is her stuffed animal collection… and maybe also her fear of bugs. When this Bioengineering Pre-Med is not working on her next Bioengineering problem set or reviewing her Anki cards, you can probably find this ice-skating girlboss performing quadruple axles at the Galleria’s ice rink (she cofounded R-ICE Skating!), taking incriminating 0.5x photos with her friends, vibing to music while doing jigsaw puzzles, or going on joyrides in the Rice Emergency Medical Services golf carts when she’s on duty. Although she spends much of her time on her daily treks from Martel to the Biosciences Research Center, she’ll always make time for you if you ever want to rant about classes, go for a boba run, or need advice about your life. Be prepared to have the most memorable O-Week experience with Alice as your Advisor, who will always be the best goto person and a great shoulder to lean on. When you catch him in the early, early morning watching an IPL cricket match, feel free to ask him how many times he’s shaved his mustache (legend has it that his upper lip has never seen the light of day) or what he thought of the last opera on campus. Zach Wilson As you probably learned within 2 minutes of meeting him (he either flexed in front of a window you were passing by or straight up said he could bench you), Zach goes to the gym. That’s pretty much his one and only personality trait and he freely and shamelessly admits this. He’s a Business major and I think a minor in Data Analysis? Don’t ask him too much about that last one though. Zac is from a suburb of Houston and is a pretty cool guy; he’ll drive you to Target and let you eat his snacks. If you are one of the lucky few that gets super close with him, he’ll let you barge into his room and steal gum (dude ALWAYS has gum). Zach is, in short, weird but chill. But he makes up for it by being a truly awesome and selfless person who will always be down to interrupt his 34th Brawl Stars game of the day to help you out if you are ever in need. Guy is cool. You all are up for an adventure having him as your O-Week dad. Maria Contreras, Hanszen '26 he/him ADVISOR | BUSI | HANSZEN ‘26 Madeline Ansley Outfit/style queen, gym fanatic, obsessive cat lover, and Buldak ramen enthusiast are just some of the ways to describe your new O-Week mom, Madeline! As a Studio Art & Psychology double major on the Pre-Med track, she should probably be spending less time on Dragonvale—almost getting hit by a car on the inner loop while playing it is just another one of her many achievements. Madeline is from El Paso, Texas, which might explain why you’ll often hear her saying, “No mames!”, or why she’ll always hunt for an authentic taco on the streets of Houston. As Hanszen's Cabinet Secretary and Beer Bike Chugger, she’s ready to welcome you into all the Hanszen Family Heart has to offer (HFH!). Whether making you her signature Buldak recipe, giving you the biggest hug, showing you cat pics, or turning into a therapist when you ask her for advice, you’ll be blown away by how caring and compassionate Madeline is. Ask her to rollerskate (she’s obsessed), cafe hop, or go on a painting date, and she’ll be there asap (her long legs seriously take her far and fast). She is ready to welcome you into Rice with her positive energy and become your bestie! Cheryl Lee, Baker '26; Sage Lee, Hanszen '26 she/her ADVISOR | VADA & PSYC | HANSZEN ‘26 35

Honey Nut Chihi r o s Pratyush Mohapatra (RHA) You are in need of a Prat in your life. This beautiful specimen —a Biosciences major and Philosophy minor hailing from Plano, Texas in the Class of 2025 —is a man of intensity. Spicy food? Not a challenge. He’ll gladly tank the heat, laugh it off, and ask for something hotter. Late night Biochemistry exam or Philosophy paper? He’s already on the grind at Fondren. Unfortunately, he’s also obsessed with the Dallas Cowboys and will try to convince you to love them as much as he does, even though they haven't had any success since the '90s. On any given day, you can find him riding the bench in intramural basketball, singing in Rice Chorale, captaining Sid's Chug Team, or "studying" (talking to people) at Brochstein Pavilion. Known around campus for his remarkable ability to overshare and capacity to somehow never get embarrassed, he is the absolute best person to share your anxieties and stresses with. He’ll probably make you feel better by telling you some mortifying story of his own , and boy, does he have a lot to choose from. Be prepared for this angelic singer, absolute life of the party, and incredible friend in your life. Matsuka is a Business major who traveled all the way from the Bay Area, California (she will remind you at least once a day :3) to help you be not only a slay woman in business, but a slay Rice student. Not only is she the jack of all trades as a master baller and amateur poker god, but she’s also a fire bobarista who can whip up the most delicious drinks for you! Whether it’s listening to keshi or fangirling over her favorite shows like First Love or Heartstopper, Matsuka will always be down to share and experience her (and yours!!!) hobbies and interests with you. Mateo Gonzales Though he is from Austin, Texas, if you want to hear an accent from anywhere around the world, Mateo Gonzales is your person. He wakes up at 5:30 every morning to go to the gym, which means he is free for the rest of the day as a helping hand to anyone in need. Mateo, a rising sophomore, is a Material Science and NanoEngineering major who secretly wants to attend law school and is excited to give you a spiel on these all day, any day. Ask him about his research on photonics and carbon nanotubes! If you are ever in the mood for a spooky time, join Mateo as he listens to true crime podcasts and watches horror movies. Also, play him some Nicki Minaj or spontaneously blast it in Hanszen Commons to see his booty shake. His favorite emoji is , so make sure to use it when sending him text messages. He is empathetic, outgoing, wise (like his grandpa’s dog, whom his parents named him after), and has impeccable navigational skills in case you are ever lost on campus. In need of assistance? He will always try his best to ensure you feel safe and accommodated. Mateo is extremely excited to welcome you all to Hanszen College (objectively, the best college on the Rice campus)! Harry lands among the 20+ artists Katherine has seen in concert (ask her about the “Eras” Tour and the class she’s teaching on Taylor Swift). A junior studying English and Social Policy Analysis with a minor in Politics, Law, and Social Thought, Katherine is the coolest Pre-Law on campus—although you might question her morals when she asks you if you would eat her arm and gets offended if you say no. A bona fide Houston tour guide, Katherine will take you to all the best study spots and coffee shops. She’s also a barista at Audrey’s, an oncampus cafe. But don’t ask for her go-to order, she hates coffee and insists she’s “non-dairy presenting.” If you ever need a lactase pill, she’s got you. She carries several of them in her pocket pharmacy. Kat is the perfect Advisor for anyone who wants to get involved. Ask her about almost any on campus organization—she's probably a part of it in some way! She is president of the Rice Taiwanese Association, dances with Rice Dance Theater, and edits for The Rice Review, among many (many) other extracurriculars. But don't worry, she'll never be too busy to be a listening ear, go out for good food or boba, and be the best Advisor you could ask for! S p r ite a t the Museum Ananya Rao Where to even begin! Ananya is one of the sweetest and most genuine people you will ever meet, and you’re so incredibly lucky if you get her as an Advisor. First of all, if you ever want a running buddy, someone to be outdoors with, or honestly just someone to go to when you’re tired, done with classes and need a hug, she’s your girl. Not only is she insanely smart (she is a Computer Science major after all), but she also bikes 100 miles just for fun and is so good at balancing her schedule to make time for other people. After just one year of knowing Ananya, I can easily say that she has become one of my closest friends simply because of how caring, friendly, and easy to talk to she is! I just know that she’ll give the same energy to the amazing TotorO-Week. Whether it’s stopping by to talk to you at the Rec for 20 minutes even when she has morning class, baking you pumpkin bread, or making sure you get sleep during finals, Ananya is the perfect person to have on your side at Rice, and I can’t wait for you to meet her (and she can’t wait to meet you guys too :)). He’s also Hanszen’s Student Maintenance Representative (SMR), so he’s the guy you call when you inevitably break a window or need your bed height adjusted. You can catch him at the Texas Medical Center Chipotle (perhaps for his infamous "vegan conversation"), holding TA office hours for like 4 different Computer Science classes simultaneously, or eating 3 plates of fries from the servery. Isabella Bartos (RHA) They say that winning the lottery is nearly impossible, but you just did by getting Isabella as your O-Week Advisor. Isabella is a proper Californian who’s making waves as a junior from your very own Hanszen. She’s a woman of many talents (except s-p-e-l-y-n-g). Even though she can’t win a spelling bee, she can win the Guinness World Record for having the world’s largest Aquaphor collection. Dryness will never be a problem when you’re around her! Plus, she can teach you how to swim, beat you in tennis, make you jewelry, read you a bedtime story, and give you the realest advice. With the wittiest comments, she will call out nonsense because she tells it like no other. She is a museum enthusiast and a lover of heist novels (which makes you wonder what her plans are…). Along with being an Ecology genius, PreMed, and girlboss, she runs Rice’s social scene, planning fun campuswide events with RPC. Isabella is a genuine, wholesome, and amazing friend who will support you through highs and lows. With her infectious Disney princess energy, this (former red-headed) little mermaid can’t wait to swim into the new school year with you all! This Hanszen sophomore comes to you all the way from Vancouver, Canada (aka the land of hockey and syrup), so he’s always ready to embrace all the cold that Houston has to offer. When he’s not hiding in his room hard at work like the studious Mechanical Engineer that he is (with the occasional break to play his newest mobile game obsession), catch him in Upper Commons wearing a hat and his Rugged Shark slides (one of the like two pairs of shoes he owns), concentrating on a game of chess playing out the opening he just learned, or letting it rip with the Beyblades he convinced Hanszen to buy. This man is ultra-competitive, so if you’re caught in a poker match or an intense game of Catan, beware he will aim to destroy you! But don’t forget to watch his face when you beat him!! If you’re into sports, Kendrick has got you covered. He does it all: baseball, football, basketball, hockey—you name it! So don’t be surprised if he tries to recruit you for one of Hanszen’s intramural teams. Kendrick is one of the most genuine and interesting people you’ll meet (seriously, listen to his playlist—mostly rap and hip-hop with some Beethoven and the song from Curious George sprinkled in). This Mathematical Economic Analysis major from Almost Chicago, Illinois will charm you with his humorous demeanor and consistent zingers. His jokes are as high in supply as they are in demand! Not only does he know where the funny is, but as a Lovett Treasurer, he is certified to know where the money is too. Standing at a solid 5’4, he’s a very down-to-earth kind of guy who is always up for a conversation. Whether he’s watching baseball (White Sox 4Life) or grinding through homework in Lovett Commons, he will drop what he’s doing to make time for you. He’s got both caffeine and ice in his veins at all times, yet always retains a remarkable level of chill that makes everyone feel at ease around him. He is always eating but never leaves crumbs! Speaking of eating, he will eat up any show tunes at a karaoke event (former theater kid!) and loves music. Stevie Wonder, Steve Lacy, Stevie Nicks, or any artist with a Steve-adjacent name will tickle his fancy. To put it simply: you’re getting a great Co-Advisor and one of the pillars of the Lovett community, who will never fail to brighten your day. Genesis Hahn Hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, Genesis Hahn is sure to make your OWeek experience unforgettable! Genesis is a junior majoring in Economics – but don’t worry, she’s not your average finance bro. With not one, not two, not three, not FOUR, but FIVE jobs, Genesis is the epitome of a girlboss. You can spot Genesis leading exceptional tours during the day then fan dancing like Avatar Kyoshi at night! Don’t forget to ask Genesis for the best food recs at her favorite late night stop – the Hoot, where she also works as a Finance Manager! Besides constantly slayin’, Genesis is also insanely creative – her works of art have been featured in the Thresher, Rice’s campus newspaper, Campanile, our yearbook, and in Hanszen’s very own film festival! Don’t get intimidated though. Genesis isn’t perfect! She runs like a crazed penguin from Naruto (but somehow competed in track and field in high school??) and is literally impossible to wake up once she conks out (most likely at Fondren or the Hanszen couches!). Genesis loves walks around Rice – but make sure that you’ve finished all your work before you go, because it will take a lifetime! From stopping to take a picture of every cute squirrel you see, to being unable to send a text (heads up she uses the weirdest emojis) while walking, Genesis is sure to keep you entertained! When he’s not in the air, this high-altitude Boulder, Colorado native might be involved at St. Mary’s, building and flying RC competition planes for Rice’s Design, Build, Fly club, binge-watching Big Mouth, concocting potions as Head of Brewing Committee, headbanging to Machine Gun Kelly, pinging the pong, or climbing Mt.
