INTRODUCTION
(Hook)
1. How many of you are going through depression? Or do you have friends or
family members who are going through depression?
2. Do you know that one of the American singers and songwriters, Chester
Bennington from the Linkin Park band, is believed to have been depressed when
he committed suicide in 2017?
3. I have taken some time to research websites about depression as well as have
experienced it myself in my life. Depression is the most common mental disorder,
and according to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 9.5 percent of the
population experiences some form of depression within any given year.
BODY
I. Background
A. What is depression?
1. A mood disorder that makes you feel sad or hopeless for some time.
2. Have a significant impact on the enjoyment of your life, work, health,
and the people who care about you.
3. It is different from usual mood fluctuations and short-lived emotional
responses to challenges in everyday life, especially when recurrent and
with moderate or severe intensity, depression may become a serious
health condition.
B. How serious can depression affect people?
1. Can cause the affected person to suffer greatly and function poorly.
2. Depression can lead to suicide. According to WHO, over 700 000 people
die due to suicide every year.
3. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds.
4. Most people, who are depressed, do not seek help or treatment.
II. Causes of depression
A. The exact cause of depression is unknown, though you can tell that a person
is depressed through the symptoms that the depressed individual shows.
B. Depression is caused by too much stress and burnout. It occurs when an
individual experiences something that makes them feel thwarted emotionally.
C. People who have depression usually see everything with a more negative
attitude, unable to imagine that any problem or situation can be solved
positively.
III. Symptoms
A. Depression is more than just the normal, temporary feeling of sadness and
hopelessness. It has other factors that your health care professional can help
you with.
B. Some of the depression symptoms include:
1. Thoughts of death or suicide
2. Trouble sleeping or excessive sleeping
3. Fatigue and lack of energy
4. Extreme difficulty concentrating
5. Difficulty managing mood swings
6. Dramatic change in appetite, often with weight gain or loss
7. Agitation, restlessness, and irritability
8. Feelings of worthlessness, self-hate, and inappropriate guilt.
IV. Treatment & Prevention
A. Treatment
1. Depression is usually treated successfully with professional counseling
and prescribed medication.
2. People with depression can be treated as outpatients or in some cases, a
person has to be hospitalized.
3. People who are so severely depressed that they are unable to function, or
who are suicidal and cannot be safely cared for in the community may
need to be treated in a psychiatric hospital.
4. Medication is also a treatment option for depression. The drugs used to
treat depression are called antidepressants.
5. Some people with major depression may feel better after taking
antidepressants for a few weeks. Most people benefit from
antidepressant drug therapy, along with psychotherapy.
B. Prevention
1. Some ways to prevent you from becoming depressed are to try to be with
other people. It is better than being alone.
2. Participate in activities that may make you feel better.
3. Going to a movie, a ballgame, or participating in religious, social, or
other activities that may help.
4. Most importantly let your family and friends help.
CONCLUSION
I have discussed the background of depression, its causes, symptoms, and
treatment choices. According to the American Psychiatric Association, at least one
out of every ten persons will experience depression at some point in their lives. That
suggests that at least 30% of you might be depressed. Even if depression is a stressful
and deadly condition, we should constantly take precautions to avoid getting
depressed. If you or someone you know exhibits any of the symptoms listed above,
you should get treatment as soon as possible. If you feel like you are depressed, seek
support from your family and friends, who might be the most helpful individuals in
your life. Remember that your loved ones are there for you, but don't be afraid to seek
expert assistance. Depression is a serious condition that can harm you and your loved
ones.
