SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
The care we provide for every child is driven by the words:
Safe Happy Progress which you will see around the Academy. Learning
to make safe choices, both within school and the wider world, is essential.
We make sure students know exactly how and who to approach to give them
support and encouragement as they grow up. We expect good attendance
and behaviour; we reward contribution.
Students are connected to a Tutor, to a Year group and to a House. Tutors,
House Leaders and Year Managers monitor the student’s progress and
engagement with school, and offer support as needed. Every student is given
opportunities to contribute and give their views, leading and supporting
other students. We want our students to feel confident and happy in their
learning and enjoy being part of the Sandown Bay Academy community.
We systematically identify the most able students in all areas and offer them
provision appropriate to their talents. Gifted students are encouraged to
aspire to achieve at the very top of their area of special ability. Those who
are gifted academically participate in events intended to help them make
the most of their talents. These have recently included a STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths) competition to design a hovercraft, visits
to Southampton and Portsmouth Universities, and meetings with former
students who have gone on to study at Oxford. Among opportunities planned
for this year are producing a school magazine in a day, ongoing mentoring
by older and ex-students, and Higher Level Thinking Skills sessions. Students
who are specially talented in Sport are part of the High Performance Academy,
accessing specialist workshops, visits and support. At Key Stage Five, each
year we routinely send students to Russell Group Universities, Oxford and
Cambridge.
SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
At Sandown Bay Academy we believe that all young people deserve to become world class learners - to learn,
enjoy, succeed and thrive in a first rate educational environment, with the best facilities, the best teaching and
the most up to date resources available to them. We strive to provide a learning environment which challenges
and supports every student, encourages active participation and creates a real passion for learning. Our
ultimate aim is to ensure that our students leave us well prepared for both university and life, as happy and well
balanced members of both the local and international community. We aim for excellence and we encourage our
students to do their best in all their endeavours.

SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
Key Stage 4
Our Key Stage Four curriculum offers a broad range of subjects leading to GCSE and BTEC. It consists of a two-year
syllabus, culminating in a public examination at the end of Year 11. Students are expected to take nine subjects,
though in some cases a student may take fewer or more. A wide range of subjects at Key Stage 4 offers students
a balanced education while keeping future study and career choices open. Choices are made bearing in mind a
breadth of disciplines, possible career choices, aptitude and enjoyment.
All students study the following core GCSE subjects – English Language, English Literature, Maths, and Science. In
addition, students may select from a very wide range of ‘option’ courses. There is a very thorough guidance process
to help students select the most appropriate course. They also all receive four lessons of PE and a programme of
Religious Education. In Science there are a number of Science pathways, including the separate Science entries of
Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. There is an expectation that students will study either French, or Spanish at GCSE.
Currently, the KS4 options are:
GCSE History, GCSE Geography, GCSE Leisure and Tourism, GCSE Health & Social Care, BTEC Children’s Play Learning
and Development, BTEC Construction and the Built Environment, GCSE Geology, GCSE Computing, GCSE Design and

level of challenge and support is
provided. Assessment information is
received from Primary Schools and
used to create sets. Students are moved
between sets during their time here.
Setting is reviewed in response to a
varied set of assessments.
SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
Sometimes in school we need longer ‘chunks’ of time to
teach learners skills or to focus on particular areas of their
learning. During each year, on carefully selected days,
we will ‘re-shape’ the regular timetable and re-direct all
students and staff onto year-based activities. These are
known as Curriculum Focus Days.
The principal aim of Curriculum Focus days is to allow the
opportunity for experiences and activities which don’t
necessarily fit into a one hour lesson - including study
visits, problem solving, confidence and team building
projects, workshops, careers advice, work experience,
additional study support sessions, performances and
guest speakers and presenters. Students may also have the
chance to develop specific skills and undertake additional
qualifications e. g. Sports Leadership.
These days not only allow groups of learners to focus
on different themes or skills for a longer period of time,
they also provide an ideal opportunity to deliver the
governments’ statutory curriculum requirements in RE,
Citizenship, Personal, Social and Health Education and
Careers information and Guidance in a more relevant
and integrated manner. A huge range of activities, guest
speakers, trips and targeted study sessions take place
including:
Accreditations in: Sports Leadership Level 1 and 2,
Football Leaders. First Aid at Work.
Theme Days: ‘World Culture Day,’ ‘Wonderstruck,’ ‘Healthy
Body, Healthy Mind Day,’ ‘Outdoor Learning Day,’
‘Head on’ Road Safety, ‘Newspaper Day,’ ‘Christmas Recycling
Challenge,’ ‘Politics Day,’ ‘British Citizenship Day,’
‘Crime Scene Investigation Day’.
Enrichment: Sports coaching, Tennis, Relaxation, Camp
Craft.
Trips to: Science Museum - London, Higher Education Fair
– Portsmouth, Kingsmead Activity Centre, University Opens
Days, Headhunters.
Information and Guidance: Options day for Year 9,
UCAS talks, Careers Fair, Careers workshops and interviews.
Sandown Bay Academy is committed to providing an inclusive education for all young people, regardless of
ability, gender, sexual orientation, language, ethnic or cultural origin. We work effectively with a wide variety
of agencies and individuals to focus on improving outcomes for all students with Special Educational Needs
or disabilities.
We are committed to:
· Raising the standards of attainment for all SEND students through a broad, balanced and relevant
curriculum that is differentiated to meet individual learning styles.
· Establishing robust systems which ensure all SEND students make excellent progress.
Creating a climate where all staff are aware that they are responsible for students with SEND and plan
their lessons accordingly.
The Academy has a SEND Co-ordinator, Mrs V Coughlin and a very experienced team of Learning Support
Assistants (LSAs) to support students designated as having SEND, be it a specific learning difficulty or
physical or sensory need. Support takes a variety of forms including one-to-one tuition, small group
interventions, specialised support groups and learning support assistants working in the classroom with
individual students and small groups. The support offered will depend upon the student’s needs, with our
main focus being to facilitate progress in their learning. We always aim to work collaboratively with students,
parent/carers and staff and are willing to speak to and meet parents/carers by appointment or at the monthly
SENDCo drop in sessions.
For more information contact [email protected].
The COVE; Autistic Spectrum Unit (ASRC)
The Academy has an Autistic Spectrum Unit which can cater for up to thirteen statemented pupils/pupils
with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). The unit is based on the main school site and the students
within it are supported by qualified, trained staff who work to integrate the students into the mainstream
curriculum. Admission arrangements to the unit are through a statementing panel.
For additional information on the COVE contact Jeanette Houghton, Cove Manager on

SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
Students are offered a wealth of opportunities at Sandown Bay Academy. There really
is something on offer for everyone. Everyone is encouraged to discover how great
their best can be; not just inside the classroom but outside too. Our staff have a vast
range of expertise and interests which enable them to offer an unrivalled variety of
opportunities.
Extra-curricular
There is a fantastic range of extra-curricular activities
which take place during lunch and after school. The
schedule is extensive and includes Duke of Edinburgh,
Chess, Debate, Drama, Athletics, Trampolining, sailing,
‘Dungeons and Dragons’, Beginners Japanese, Climbing,
to Global Rock to name but a few!
In addition, we have a strong team of peripatetic music
teachers who come into school to give individual
instrumental lessons during the school day and which
guide students towards exceptional concerts and
performing arts events.
Duke of
Edinburgh
Many students from years 9-13 are working on their
bronze, silver or gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. We
are particularly proud of the large number of students
who have committed to such a prestigious award. It
gives students’ skills, confidence and a view on life that
everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and
universities. Four ex-students received their Gold Duke
of Edinburgh Awards at St James Palace in April; this is
an impressive achievement and represents a long term
commitment to undertaking gruelling expeditions and
extensive voluntary work under the guidance of our
committed staff and fellow students.

Houses
Belonging to a House which mixes all year groups from Year 7 to 13 is a traditional valued feature of the school
and very often provides those unforgettable memories. Our students love being part of the house system; it
promotes healthy competition, team building and a strong sense of community and belonging. They enjoy the
weekly sporting competitions alongside other exciting activities such as Spelling-bee, Maths challenge and
Public Speaking.
Performing Arts
We excel in performing arts; our productions are awe-inspiring,
our Global Rock performances are amazing, our dance shows are
captivating and our musicians are excellent.
Sixth Form students were chosen to perform at The Bestival for
the fifth year running this September. Our incredibly talented
students won first place in six categories across the Isle of Wight
Music, Drama and Dance Festival earlier this year.
Sixth Form students have progressed to an impressive range
of university courses and destinations, including, Music at
Birmingham Conservatoire and Contemporary Dance at The
Scottish School of Contemporary Dance
SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
Trips
Students explore the world with confidence and
build cultural links through trips and visits that are
available to the whole school. Regular trips include an
activity week in Trewern Wales, Ski trips, a Geography
trip to Cornwall, an activity week on the Isle of
Arran, exchange visits to Spain and France as well as
numerous day trips to London and other cities. There
are also many day trips to universities.
Empowering
students
Our School Council actively ensures that students are
very involved in making decisions at Sandown Bay
Academy, within the last year they have been striving to
create the best learning environment both in and out of
the classroom. They have been working on five priority
areas; Protocols and Policies, Learning, Fundraising,
Students Support and Events and Opportunities.
Over 200 student leaders ensured that the Baylink
Olympics in June was a huge success with competitors
from nine partner schools. 1000 primary school
children had two amazing days, competing in events
and exploring the cultures of their Olympic nations.
This event was organised and led by students. One
of the largest student led events in the Country, it
encapsulates the energy and enthusiasm if so many
young people within the Olympic spirit.
SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
Sport
Sport at Sandown does not just encourage talented students to shine-
although when they do, they often do so on the national and international
stage with great success. It allows all students a chance to find new areas of
sporting interest from trampolining to archery, from rowing to climbing.
Our reputation for sport continues to have a special significance
to Sandown Bay and the island. The facilities and opportunities are
exceptional; from the track, the five a side Astroturf pitch and the climbing
wall, all across a site which includes large fields and spaces against the
attractive backdrop of Brading downs. The Sporting Curriculum will see
students running, walking and cycling to other local settings including the
beach, park and cycle paths.
The High Performance Academy is dedicated to developing our most gifted
and talented sports students. It recognises, supports and guides them
through inspirational workshops and close mentoring.
Sports Leaders UK recognised the exceptional contribution of Sandown
Bay Academy to leadership development and volunteer deployment in
the community and have made us a Leadership Academy. 58 students
completed the qualification last year and we were overwhelmed with
thanks from the local community for the events they ran such as the Baylink
Olympics and sports days, so successfully.

SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
We strive to get as many students as possible to take part in work experience and to make the most of the
many outreach opportunities available to them. We want our students to be aspirational; we want them to
see a variety of jobs and careers, we regularly take them on trips to universities and set their sights high for
the future.
In 2014-15, we placed over 250 students on work experience. We were fortunate to have the support of
placements such as Monroes Hair salon, Pets at Home, Wiltons Garage, Honnor & Jeffrey Garden Centre,
Ocean View Hotel, Pascall, GKN, BAE and Gurit to name a few. We have had huge support on many occasions
from Platform One, Newchurch Primary, St Blasius, The Bay, Gatten & Lake and Bembridge Primary Schools.
We have also built strong links with Red Funnel, Steve Porter Transport, Unity Motors and the Chamber
of Commerce. We have been overwhelmed by the support, advice and enthusiasm shown by so many
businesses and individuals.
Last year we organised student visits to Portsmouth University and the University of Southampton. All Year
12 students have the opportunity to visit universities. Overall, we took over 200 students to visit universities;
this included STEM (Science, Technology, Maths, Engineering and Maths), Languages, Psychology,
Humanities and English. We have also supported teams linked with the ‘Hover project’, ‘My School is an Island’
(Engineering Development Trust) and the Sixth Form Engineering challenge (EDT & GKN).
Independent Advice and Guidance is provided by Choices, the service organised by the Isle of Wight Council.
Advisers come to Sandown and discuss students’ progression onto careers. All Year 11 students have an
individual interview with appropriate follow up. Within Sandown Mrs Adams organises careers information
and work experience. The PSHE programme delivered in Tutor time and on Curriculum Focus Days includes
aspects of planning for progression.
Sandown Bay Academy’s Torch Transition Programme ensures that students visit the Academy on many occasions
during Year 6 so that they are confident and fully prepared when they start in Year 7. The process starts in
the Autumn Term when students visit the Academy for workshops in Music, Maths, Science, Computing and
Technology. In March each Year 6 student is given a pen pal buddy in Year 7; their buddy writes to them and gives
them a tour of the academy on their transition day visit in June.
Throughout the summer term there are lots of additional chances for them to visit and get tasters of the wealth
of opportunities that are on offer at Sandown Bay Academy. On top of their two induction days in July, they take
part in a number of specialist days such as Performing Arts workshops, Languages workshops and a Sports Talent
Development Camp. They also take part in the two day spectacular event ‘The Baylink Olympics’ with over 1200
local primary school students.
Year 6 students also complete a transition project in English, Maths, Science or Geography, with the support of
Sandown Bay Academy teachers.
In August, students are invited to take part in Summer School. This year, activities included fossil hunting, climbing,
orienteering, beach games, water sports at Wight Waters, kite flying, pond dipping and cooking. Students also
visited Robin Hill and took an open top bus ride of the Isle of Wight. Alongside these thrilling activities they also
undertook lessons in art and poetry. As well as being a great deal of the fun, the activities are carefully designed to
develop students’ skills in literacy, numeracy, oracy and to build their confidence before starting secondary school.
“Meeting the Year 6 students numerous times throughout the year, through activities and events,
enables us to really get to know the year group. Their confidence and enthusiasm to be a member of
Sandown Bay Academy grows throughout the year.”

SANDOWN BAY ACADEMY PROSPECTUS
At Sandown Bay Academy we are committed to preparing our students for a digital world. We bring
the world to the classroom by participating in the global community, providing opportunities for real-
world problem solving. We promote the use of technology to provide access to anywhere, anytime
learning that extends beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom and time constraints. We
empower faculty and staff in developing professional learning communities as they embrace new
technologies and digital spaces.
Sandown Bay Academy maximises teaching and learning by enabling access to technology for all teachers
and students. Staff and students benefit from wireless connectivity from virtually anywhere on the school
grounds. The Academy has a standardised set of technology tools, hardware and software that promotes
student achievement, fosters best practises in teaching and learning, and facilitates cost-effective
professional development and technical support. Teachers and students have access to technology tools
to support their needs both during and after school. Each teacher has access to a laptop or tablet device, a
networked printer and a SMART Board or TV for projection. We have recently invested in 2 new Computing
suites to extend the opportunities for students to engage with technology. Computer Science is taught as
an integrated element of the curriculum throughout Key Stages 3 and 4
E-safety
Students learn Internet safety via the digital citizenship programme, which includes age-appropriate
discussions of online behaviour, cyberbullying and respectful use of online tools. Students use technology
to organise their work, write essays and take notes, conduct research, create multimedia presentations,
write reports, and communicate via email. All students are issued with a Sandown Bay Academy email
account. All homework is posted via an online system (Show My Homework) through which students and
parents can access worksheets and check submission status. The E-safety Policy outlines clear guidelines
for maintaining privacy, confidentiality and security in the digital world.
We believe that students have the best chance of success if a strong three-way partnership exists between
the school, the parents and the student. At the start of the academic year we hold Parent Partnership
meetings to set out the year ahead so parents understand how they can work with the Academy to best
support their child. Parents will meet their child’s teachers at Parents’ Evening and email communication
with tutors and teachers is encouraged. Parents are kept informed through letters, a fortnightly newsletter,
weekly Principal’s Blog, our website, students planners, texting and email.
Parental voice is very important to us; our Parent Forum meet once every half term, working in partnership
with the Academy. The remit of the group is to identify and represent the views of parents and carers on
the education we provide and other matters affecting the education and welfare of the students. Recently
the group have ensured that the reporting system is clearer, and discussions about homework brought
about the introduction of ‘Show my Homework.’
