Proudly, he said “This is the rarest

the trumpet sound came out from the
Wiset Chaisri Gate. At the same time, a
procession of royal cars drove passed me
into the Grand Palace. At that second, it
seemed like sorrow fainted for a while as
the Thais were crying out “long live the
princess”. The picture of Princess Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn smiling and waving at
us is still vivid in my memory until now.

The Mien
It was late in the morning but the rivers of
Thais yet had not declined, composing of
people at almost every age ranging from
primary school students to grandmothers
in wheelchairs. One of the most eye-
catching visitors seemed to be the Mien,
a major hill tribe in Thailand, from
Kamphaeng Phet province. They were
dressed in their traditional clothes, and
with King Bhumibol’s photographs in their
hands; they walked through the gate with
immense intention.

Students
“Is that a student from our school?”, one of my
friends who were with me spoke out. I swiftly
turned and looked. There stood a girl, with her
family I guessed, who wore Satit Pathumwan
uniform. I was not really astounded since I did
meet a boy from our school before, in that
morning. The government declared that the
students coming to pay their respects should
wear their uniform, that is why it was so easy
to spot anyone I might know. I ran to the girl
and introduced myself. “We were here since

four in the morning,” the girl’s mother told
me. “I wanted to come myself, and my parents
were willing to take me here too, so our
family all came together,” the girl explained.
Unfortunately, she could not stay so long
because she would be having a tutoring class
soon.
Wail
In front of the Sri Soonthorn Gate, the people
who had paid their respects walked out one
after another, some mourning, some wailing.
A grandma in a wheelchair weeped as if she
would lose her breath until the boy scouts
came to take care of her. I walked to another
grandma and asked her how was it inside;
she sobbed and answered “The atmosphere
was heartbreaking. I could not stand it that
finally I cried.” She also stated that she was
71 years old. Her house was in Bangkok and
she was here since 2 o’clock in the morning.
Everyday since the King’s death, she came
to Sanam Luang as she reminisced about
the King. “Although it was tiring, I could gain
my strength back after taking a break. For
His Majesty the King, it is just a little thing.”
Grandma’s younger brother joshed “My sister
is still energetic”. Before I said goodbye to
grandma, she told me “The guards said they
would close at 9 PM. I wanted to wait for my
children from the other provinces and go in
again together, it would be in time.”

White flowers and jasmine garlands
Because the queue for paying respects in the
Grand Palace was rather long, many people
did not go inside. Instead, they payed their

respect outside. Hundreds of white flowers
and jasmine garlands were ubiquitous. Few
hundreds lying in front of the late King’s
pictures in around Sanam Luang, another
few hundreds rested beside the Grand
Palace’s walls.

Live Broadcast
Even though the sun was gone and the
darkness took over the sky, the amount of
Thais didn’t drop. However, the queue of
people remained outside during the royal
funeral ceremony. During that time, I saw
a woman wai, put her hands together as
to show respect in Thai way, facing to the
Grand Palace with her phone on her knees. I
thought she was chatting with her friends or
doing something; but no, she was watching
live broadcast of the royal ceremony and
were praying for the late King as if she was
also in front of the late King’s body.

“His Majesty the King had the true virtue. I did this for my
beloved King and the rain would not be able to break my
motive.”

Downpouring rain cannot cease
Lightning flashed in the clouds repeatedly
until the rain down poured around 8 PM.
Everyone was rushing into the nearby tents.
I was soaked and had to lay my camera down
at the bottom of my rucksack. When the rain
became lighter 30 minutes later, I walked
back to Sanam Luang. The road cleaners
were draining the flooding rainwater from
the road so people were able to walk while
the raincoats were handed out. The queue of
the Thais waiting to enter the Grand Palace
didn’t shrink. They would have to wait until
tomorrow. I decided to go back home because
I could feel that I would be catching a cold
soon.

21:17
Before I returned home, I stopped and talked
to a middle-aged woman, who was with her
son and daughter. “I’m from Krabi province.
This is my first day and it has been 12 hours
of waiting.” The place I met her was not even
close to the front of the queue. It would

definitely be the next day when she got to enter the Grand Palace. I asked her if she was tired
and the answer I received with her beaming face was, “His Majesty the King had the true virtue.
I did this for my beloved King and the rain would not be able to break my motive.” I took some
pictures of her family, and finally walked to the bus stop. I thought “I was here since 05:12. Now
it is 21:17, it’s the time for me to go back home, father.”

In fact, King Bhumibol did not leave us behind, instead, he lives in his people’s hearts forever.

But that was enough for me.
At the landing ground, the person
who had saved my sister gently placed her on

her with all the worries leaving me. At that
moment nothing seemed to matter anymore.
It was just me and my sister in the whole
world until a firm voice broke me away from
my reverie.
"Mr. Tengo have you minimized the
damage of the flood?"
"Yes, Your Grace. We have already
informed the citizens in the flooding route
to evacuate until further notice." An officer
replied while passing a map with complicated
markings and symbols. The man who had
been addressed as 'Your Grace' took it and
observed it carefully.
"We could apply Vetiver grass

Artificial Rain

One of the most well known invention of King Bhumibol
Adulyadej is artificial rain. Thailand has quite a lot of drought
throughout the area making agricultural life more difficult. His

Soil acidity had been a big problem for Narathiwat. The soil
became acid after the flood dried out. King Bhumibol who has
visited Narathiwat very often decided to fix the acid soil. The
first way is to use the water to wash away the soil, then, plant
the tree using a nitrogen-phosphorus fertiliser. The second
way is to mix marl soil with the top layer of the soil.
