while the School Chaplain is responsible for guidance and pastoral care. The
Development and Alumni office coordinates school improvements,
international links and alumni involvement.
The support staff consists of administrative staff, technicians, librarians,
drivers, maintenance, security guards, cleaning and cafeteria staff; all of
whom work tirelessly to create a safe and enabling environment which is
conductive for teaching and learning

THE SCHOOL PHILOSOPY

The school’s Philosophy is envisaged in the school Motto as found in the
School Logo: “Bonitas, Disciplina, Scientia” (Goodness, Discipline and
Knowledge). These Latin words appear in gold lettering above the school
entrance and beneath the school crest on every blazer. They refer to three
inspiring virtues that have created the community spirit of St. Mary’s School.
They are the ideals by which pupils and students strive to stand for and,
whose fruits they seek to produce in their daily lives.
The school aims to provide a holistic education based on Christian
principles and to foster goodness, to train in self-discipline and provide
knowledge. The students are encouraged to strive for excellence and to
fulfill their potential in both academics and co-curricular activities.

ADMISSIONS
We teach our students more than just curricula based education but also positive
life changing values and skills that will help them long after they leave our school.
Most parents who bring their children to St. Mary's do so because they want their
children to be developed intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually. The
profile of most of these parents is that they are looking to give their to give their
children a positive educational experience in which the child is encouraged to be
best in academics, leadership, sports and the Arts.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
St. Mary's School is an equal opportunity Institution and so we do not exclude any
prospective student on the basis of religion, race or affiliations. All in all, we seek
to provide opportunities to students who give life best shot. That said, St Mary's
School Nairobi admits students on the basis of merit and nothing else.

ADMISSION
Application for admission should be directed to the Admissions office. Entry to the school is
conditional on the satisfactory performance in a test or interview. All correspondence should be
addressed to the Administrator, from whom further information may be obtained.
COUNSELLING AND CHAPLAINCY
The spiritual guidance of the school is entrusted to the school Chaplain. Students are given
regular religious instructions and prepared for Holy Communion and the Sacrament of
Confirmation.
Though St. Mary’s is primarily a Catholic School, the spiritual welfare of non-Catholics is provided
for. Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh students are offered weekly religious classes by religious
leaders of the different denominations. The school gives individual guidance to students through
the Chaplaincy office.
 SPORTS
The school has swimming, rugby, soccer, lawn-tennis, squash, and basketball as major games.
Students also play badminton, tae-kwon-do and table tennis. There are tennis, squash, and
badminton courts. We have a 25 meter swimming pool and a baby pool for pupils in grade one
and two. School teams participate in national and international events. To encourage internal
competition, students are allocated to one of the four houses. House teams compete in major
games each term, the annual swimming gala and field and track events at the annual sports day.
AMENITIES
The school has separate libraries for the Junior and Senior Schools. It has six well equipped
science laboratories, two computer laboratories fully linked to the internet, two art rooms, a music
center and a large hall. Light refreshments are available at the cafeteria. Students may have hot
meals at lunch time on payment of a small fee.
We also have a spacious hall that is used for many of our indoor activities.

MUSIC, DRAMA AND CLUBS
The school has a tradition of dramatic and musical activities unparalleled in the region. There is a
senior orchestra, as well as regular music lessons throughout the school. The school participation
in the Kenya Music Festival dates back to its beginning and our students have won prizes in most
classes of festival entry.
Many musicals have been performed since the first one, The Mikado, was staged in 1970, and
there is an annual inter-house drama festival.
There are variety of clubs and the opportunity to develop many talents, (the photography club,
science club, environmental club, chess club, debating and many others). There is an annual
inter-house debating competition. With the onset of clamour on climate change and global
warming, the Stand Up Shout Out Club (SUSO) is at the forefront. This is done in collaboration
with the Young Catholic Society (YCS).

Competency Based Curriculum
We live in a Globalized world. We must therefore, look beyond our national borders
for our learners need and deserve 21st Century Education opportunities.
Leaders across the globe emphasize that youth need five skills to succeed and lead
today.
These are:
a) Critical Thinking,
b) Character,
c) Creativity,
d) Collaboration
e) Communication.
It is gratifying to note that these 21st Century Education soft skills are included in
the core competencies of Kenya's Education. These soft skills are best acquired and
developed as the children get involved in organised outdoor activities such as clubs,
sports and music. Further, both the 21st Century Education and Kenya's
Competency Based Curriculum are child centered and inquiry based.
St Mary's School has got the infrastructure, the framework and resources to
comprehensively deliver Competency Based Curriculum for global citizens.

St Mary’s started IB in February 1983 with three main

aims.

These were to provide a broader but still very rigorous

alternative to the A levels to assist in placing students in

overseas universities and to provide a carefully

integrated two year programme which stresses moral

values and the spirit of service.

This last aim helps to fulfill the mission of St Mary’s

since its foundation to educate the whole person and

enable students grow

in  “bonitas”(goodness),  “disciplina”(self-

discipline)  and  “scientia”(knowledge)  the three inspiring

virtues which form the school motto and which have

created the community spirit of St Mary’s for over sixty

years

SCHOOL SONG
We stand for God and for his glory,

The Lord supreme and God of all;
Against his foes we raise his standard;

Around the cross we hear his call.

Strengthen our faith, Redeemer;
Guard us when danger is nigh;
To thee we pledge our lives and service,
For God we live , for God we’ll die:
To thee we pledge our lives and service,
For God we live, for God we die.

We stand for God! Jesus our master

Has died to save our love untold;
His law divine and truth unchanging
In this our land their place must hold.

We stand for God, let us be loyal,
Our love proclaim with every breath.
To Christ the King and Lord of Lords,

We will be faithful unto death.
