Year-in-Review
Hurricane Season...6 storms hit Louisiana out of 30
There have been eight Gulf storms so far in 2020. At one point or another, Cristobal—June 2, Marco—August 22, Laura—August 22, Sally—September 13, Beta—September 21 and Delta—October 5 all had forecast tracks that included Louisiana. Hurricane Laura took the hardest hit on Louisiana when it made landfall in the southwestern part of the state as a Category 4 hurricane.
An extremely active 2020 hurricane season
The extremely active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is drawing to a close with a record-breaking 30 named storms and 12 landfalling storms in the continental United States. While the official hurricane season concludes on November 30, tropical storms
may continue to develop past that day.

Alumni...
The New Orleans City Council approved the renaming of South Jefferson Davis Parkway in honor of President Emeritus Norman C. Francis. This is the first time that a New Orleans street, originally named after a confederate figure, has been changed since protests against white supremacy and police brutality began. The vote was unanimous.
Originally submitted in January 2018 with the support of the entire Xavier community and Board of Trustees, the university leadership was compelled to resubmit this request this year in honor of Dr. Francis’ work in the field of higher education and the role it plays in creating a just and humane society.
“Dr. Francis always knew that education is the pathway to social justice,” said Reynold Verret, President of Xavier University of Louisiana. “His unwavering commitment and courage in the face of adversity spanned 50 plus years at Xavier and taught us all many lessons on how we must serve and lead our community.”
This decision is pivotal and provides a pathway forward to ensure that the entryway to Xavier’s south campus promotes equality and inclusivity as it welcomes generations of future Xavierites and reminds all who traverse it the legacy of those who have come before us. Jefferson Davis Parkway, named in 1910 for the slave-owning Confederate president, will be renamed Norman C. Francis Parkway next year.
Here’s what the former Xavier University President had to say about the rename: Norman Francis on renaming Jeff Davis Parkway in his honor: ‘I am most grateful’

Alum Raymond Williams and His Role in Ending Segregation in the U.S. Military
New Orleans native and Xavier alum 1952 (passed February 2, 2020 at the age of 92), Raymond J. Williams made a mark on black history when his unit was the first to integrate the American military. Williams joined the United States Marine Corps during a time when the Marines were still heavily segregated. He served as a Corporal in the all-black Montford Point Marines during World War II. The Montford Point Marines were the black men who enlisted in the Marines from 1942-1949, stationed near Montford Point in Jackson, North Carolina.
In 2011, the United States Congress granted the 19,000 soldiers who made up the Montford Point Marines a collective Congressional Gold Medal.

Deirdre Roberson refuses to be defined by just one part of her life. Scientist, designer, entrepreneur, and model are only a few of her roles, and she’s made a business out of dealing with shades of complexity. Literally.
Roberson’s Detroit clothing line Eumelanin (pronounced “you-mel-a-nin”) comes in many colors of human skin tones, with the aim of starting a dialogue about our visual differences. The fashion brand bears the chemical structure of melanin — the natural pigment that is responsible for skin color.

Xavier alum and Louisiana native Dr. Steve Morgan Jr., a practicing doctor in Ohio, lost his grandmother Mary Louise Brown on March 27, 2020, to the disease known as COVID-19 caused by the novel coronavirus. Meeting his grief with action, Dr. Morgan decided to organize a mitigation effort to ensure that less people have to experience what he felt as he watched his loved one die through a glass window.

Xavier University of Louisiana Receives $20 million Gift from Anonymous Donor
A $20 million gift from a donor wishing to remain anonymous has become Xavier University of Louisiana’s largest private donation from an individual to date. This gift allows the university to expand scholarships, endow new faculty positions and make much needed investments to sustain the mission of the nation’s only Catholic and historically Black university.
The $20 million gift, announced July 28, 2020, represents an entrée into a new era of fundraising at the institution as it approaches its 100th year anniversary in 2025.
“This gift will enhance the university’s capacity to educate in the medical sciences, pharmacy, law, the arts, and the social sciences.”
Gifts such as this change the lives of our students, their communities and the nation.

In honor of longtime Xavier University of Louisiana President Dr. Norman C. Francis, the PeyBack Foundation is establishing the Dr. Norman C. Francis PeyBack Endowed Scholarship at Xavier, which will help
deserving, underrepresented students access a quality education.
“I am so grateful that The PeyBack Foundation recognizes the value and importance of investing in underrepresented individuals,” said Dr. Reynold Verret, president of Xavier University of Louisiana. “Norman C. Francis was passionate about education during his 47- year tenure as president of Xavier, and he still is. This is a great way to honor his legacy and promote a more just and humane society through education, which is the core of Xavier’s mission.”
Peyton Manning, a New Orleans native and legendary NFL quarterback, and his wife Ashley Manning established the PeyBack Foundation in 1999 to promote the future success of disadvantaged youth by assisting programs that provide leadership and growth opportunities for children at risk. Since its inception, the foundation has provided millions of dollars in grants to various organizations and programs.
“I am very grateful to Peyton Manning for his extraordinary gift to Xavier University in my honor,” said Francis. “By helping Xavier, Peyton is making a positive impact on the lives of many talented and well-deserving students at a very critical time. As well, it helps Xavier’s mission to advance a more just and humane society.”
The Dr. Norman Francis PeyBack Endowed Scholarship will enable a qualifying sophomore student the ability to access up to $8,000 per year, which will follow the scholar for three years through their senior year.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — Day 2021
Advice for Living as perpetuated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was an African American activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
This past year has been resolute with challenges regarding social justice. Many were shocked and saddened by numerous events that occurred. However, it is through that darkness that people garnered the opportunity to come together to discuss and appreciate their differences.
He is best known for advancing Civil Rights through non-violence and civil disobedience inspired by his Christian beliefs. As a Christian minister,
Dr. King’s main influence was Jesus Christ and the Christian gospels. His faith was strongly based on God’s commandment to love your neighbor as yourself.
People sought to find common ground so that all may flourish and honor the Commandments given by God.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a man who exhibited an intrinsic belief
in truth, justice, compassion, love and Christianity. Throughout his life, the most compelling evil that fueled his passion was injustice. His stance on the importance of combating injustice with love is substantiated in this excerpt from his speech given to the “Montgomery Improvement Association”:
Dr. King’s philosophy is parallel to the philosophy of St. Paul of the Cross, the founder of the Passionists. Through his words and actions, St. Paul of the Cross perpetuated the belief that the Lord’s Passion is a demonstration of God’s love for all people.
“I want to tell you this evening that it is not enough for us to talk about love. Love is one of the pivotal points of the Christian faith. There is another side called justice. And justice is really love in calculation. Justice is love correcting that which revolts against love”.
-Martin Luther King, Jr. (MIA Mass Meeting December 5, 1955)
As we commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are all empowered to pursue the channel that allows us to enliven that beacon of hope that fuels justice for all.
I choose love.
In the peace of Christ’s love,
Father Michael Higgins, CP Spiritual Director
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a brilliant writer who chronicled the existence of the Lord’s Passion and God’s grace and mercy through his words. In the summer of 1957, Ebony Magazine invited Dr. King to write a monthly column entitled “Advice for Living”. Below is a notable quote from one of his articles written in 1957 that profoundly speaks to the importance of love. These words are still relevant today:
“I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism, but of practical realism. Far from being the pious injunction of a Utopian dreamer, love is an absolute necessity
for the survival of our civilization. To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe. Someone must have sense enough and morality enough to cut off the chain of hate and evil, and this can only be done through love.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr., 1957

Four lucky graduating seniors received the surprise of a lifetime during the annual Black History Convocation ceremony when Xavier alum, L. Chris Stewart, announced a pledge on behalf of his firm to pay off the tuition balance for the graduating seniors. Mr. Stuart announced the surprise with a charge for students to “pay it forward” by doing the same when they are able to one day.
Stewart shared stories of his own college experiences at Xavier-- financial issues included. He admitted that as a former student, he often worried about finances, food and his academic performance. Stewart reassured students that he understands what it is like to be in their position and acknowledged the hard work and dedication that is required to be a successful student at Xavier. Most importantly, he reassured them that the hard work will one day pay off.
Stewart encouraging students to live to serve others as opposed to living to impress them. He emphasized the advantages of being a person of color. “You are the descendants of kings and queens. Slavery only lasted for 200 years-- our ancestors ruled for thousands of years. Your blackness is a strength, not a weakness,” said Stewart.
Stewart graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2000, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. He was also a dedicated member of Kappa Alpha Psi during his time on campus. He is now Managing Partner and CEO of Stewart Trial Attorneys, his own law firm where he handles several high profile civil rights cases like Alton Sterling’s and Scout Shultz’s, both victims of police brutality caught on camera. He made his mark on history when he won the first billion-dollar verdict in history for a rape victim. Having won over $100 million in settlements and verdicts, L. Stewart is regarded as one of the nation’s top civil trial lawyers. Mr. Stewart calls himself “the example of black excellence,” and we can’t agree more.

St. Joseph’s Day Altar
Every March 19th New Orleans Catholics celebrate St. Joseph’s Day by constructing elaborate altars to honor the relief St. Joseph provided during a famine in Sicily. The tradition began in the late 1800’s when Sicilian immigrants settled in New Orleans.
St. Joseph’s Day Customs & Traditions
St. Joseph altars, representing the Holy Trinity, are divided into three sections with a statue of St. Joseph at the head. Because the altars thank St. Joseph for relieving hunger—this table is often decorated with flowers and candles, and people place wine and foods on it that are considered
lucky. Some of these lucky foods include fava beans and lemons. All of these foods have symbolic meanings. Fava beans were the only things that survived a drought during the Middle Ages in Italy – which is why it is considered lucky. Breadcrumbs are worked into the recipes of the dishes because St. Joseph was a carpenter and the breadcrumbs represent sawdust. Some people place fish and seafood on the altar as well. However, what is not placed on St. Joseph’s Table is any dish which contains meat.
That’s because this holiday occurs during Lent.
St. Katharine’s encounter with Joseph
Sister Pat Suchalski of the sisters of the Blessed Sacrament noted that her religious community’s former archivist, Stephanie Morris tells the story of an incident in St, Katharine Drexel’s life that some believe to be a direct encounter with St. Joseph.
St. Katharine Drexel and another of her religious sisters were once traveling to Virginia to check on the building of one of their schools, St. Francis de Sales. Running late by train, they didn’t reach Richmond until 1 a.m. and no one was there to greet them at the train station.
After the two prayed, an older Black gentleman appeared and asked if they were the ladies he was to take to Durham Street. They didn’t know anything about Durham, but felt he was an answer to their prayers. He brought them to St. Joseph Convent on Durham Street and then departed.
When they rang the bell at 2 a.m., a sister came to the door and let them in, but - after checking further - they discovered that no one had sent a man to the station for them.
St. Katharine Drexel believed the man was St. Joseph.

SGA-Student Government Association Officers
Over the summer Azhae’la Hanson spent her days in the streets of Minneapolis handing out supplies and using her voice to bring about meaningful change.
Change will only come, when we, like the late Congressman John Lewis, decide to get into some good trouble. SGA Chief Justice Tia Alexander lead campus voter registration initiatives, and while voting may not be the only way to bring about change, it is certainly one of the most effective ways to make your voices heard. Every Wednesday and Friday from August until October 2, and October 3, SGA hosted voter registration tables from 12pm-

3pm in the University Center Lobby, NCF Annex, College of Pharmacy Lobby and the first floor of Xavier South. At the tables you can register to vote in Louisiana using your local address or learn how to request an absentee ballot from your home states.
