Foreword

Dragons and folklore has been a
very interesting subject for me. This is a
very special project for me as it touch a
topic that I am very much interested.
I would like to take this opportunity
to all my supervisors who I am very grateful
for their help and guidance. I would also
like to express a very special thanks to
everyone involved, family and friends who
have give me moral support as I work on
this project.
Hopefully this project are able to
inspire people and open more doors of
oppurtinities for me in the future.

Muhammad Haziq Fakhruddin Bin
Mohd Azam is a 25 years old illustrattor
from Kulai, Johor. He has a study
background of a Degree in Graphic Design
in Uitm Puncak Alam.

He is a major in illustration and has
been interested in it especially in character
design, graffiti, mural and street art.

This project is dedicated into
preserving the cultural value of local
Malaysian folklore in the hope
that it can inspire the
future generation
into appreciating it.

Introduction
The Legend

The legend of Tasik Chini Dragon originated from the Chini Lake in
Pahang. The folklore is circulated to an Orang Asli community who lives in the
area. According to the legend, the dragon known as “Naga Seri Gumum,” also
known as the Malaysian Loch Ness monster, has lived at Chini Lake. There is an
ancient city at the bottom of this lake, according to some residents. According to

legend, the ancient city resembles Khmer, Cambodia.

The Legend

Based on different version of the folklore, there
are 3 different dragons that are famous in the story.
They all inhabited the Chini Lake. The 3 of them are
called Seri Gumum, Seri Pahang and Seri Kemboja.
In a version of the legend, it is said that once
seri gumum was a princess of a kingdom. The princess
turned into a dragon when aftering her lover, Seri
Kemboja. Seri Kemboja is said to be a prince from
Cambodia who has the power to turn into a dragon and
seduced Princess Seri Gumum.

In another version of the
folklore, The battle between the
dragons at Chini Lake marks the
beginning of history. Two male and
female dragon pairs moved to the
South China Sea following the defeat.
The male dragon had to turn around
and search for the female dragon
cloth when it disappeared while they
were travelling to the South China
Sea. Peace can return because the
dragons aren’t fighting each other.

The Legend

Another version of the myth claims that the state of Pahang
is constantly under danger from two other dragons, known as
Seri Kemboja and Seri Siam. According to legend, the dragons Seri
Gumum and Seri Pahang engaged in combat with these foreign
dragons but were defeated due to their superior strength.

The dragon head illustration are
designed based on references that are
collected from statues at temples around
Malaysia.

of the dragon statue can
be seen as it has big and
protruding teeth.

The Dragon
Feets and Claws
Asian dragon mostly are
illustrated to has claws that has
the shape of a chicken feet. Some
illuustrated them to have three to
four fingers.

The Lake

The water illustration is illustrated based on the design of Malay
Silat Carving to gives it a more local element. The body of water can be
seen through all three series of painting.

Seri Gumum is a dragon who resides in Tasik Chini. Tasik Chini is a lake where villagers
catch fish for foods. The lake is surrounded with lotus flower. In a version of the legend, it is said
that once seri gumum was a princess of a kingdom called Lagara. The princess turned into a drag-
on when aftering her lover, Seri Kemboja.

Seri Pahang fight with Siam soldier that is being called by Seri Kemboja. Seri Pahang tries
to stop Seri kemboja who wreak havoc at tasik chini. Seri Pahang died while fighting Seri Kemboja.
Seri Pahang is the oldest and wisest among the 3 dragons.

Seri Kemboja is a dragon that always wreak havoc in Tasik Chini. In a version of the folklore
story, Seri Kemboja worked with the emperor of Siam to defeat Seri Pahang. Seri Kemboja is a
dragon that come from other lake to Tasik Chini causing disturbance to the villagers.
