Seasons Greetings from Avila
1

From the Principal
As a Catholic school community at Christmas we celebrate the simple and prophetic joy of a baby coming into the world and changing everything. The message of Christ is a powerful one that shapes our shared Gospel values and shows us how to be faith, hope and love for ourselves and for each other.
At this 2017 Christmas I have much to be grateful for; as a new member of
the Avila family this year I have been embraced by a tradition of joy, kindness and excellence - truly marvelous presents to have been gifted and to be able to re ect on this Christmas.
Thank you to the students, staff and families who have walked me along
the 2017 Avila Journey - you have each made the world of difference to me and from where I sit, to each other also.
At Christmas we have the chance to give thanks, to give presents and to give the gift of love to our families and friends - I hope we all take this opportunity.
In the last weeks of the school year
we celebrated Presentation Evening at Monash University’s Robert Blackwood Hall. This celebration of student excellence in its many forms across all year levels was a great opportunity to gather as a whole school community and recognise the many different achievements of our students. Congratulations to all award recipients.
This week the students in years 7 to
9 have participated in the Alternative Week program. This program invites students to immerse themselves in learning in a way not usually available
to them. Be sure to ask your Year 7, 8 and 9 daughters what they have learnt throughout this last week of term four.
As is natural, at the end of a school year some staff also take their careers in different directions.
On behalf of the Avila College community I thank and wish all the best to the following staff who will be leaving at the end of the year:
Ms Jolenta Kirkwood (Curriculum Leader The Arts), Mrs Kate Johnston (Curriculum Leader RE), Mrs Chelsea Millar,
Miss Stephanie Schwartzman,
Mrs Sarah Phillips (Teacher Librarian), Miss Lauren McAlister (Instrumental music teacher) and Mrs Maureen Adams who retires after 45 years at Avila.
Over the holiday and summer break students and parents might enjoy reading a good book - sharing a good read opens up lots of conversation and lls the lazy hours we are sometimes fortunate to have over January.
Wishing all students, families and staff all of the Blessings of the Christmas Season as well as a safe and restful holiday break.
Happy Learning & Christmas!

Prayer
Loving God,
During this holy season of Christmas
We ask for your blessing on all families
Let Mary’s openness to your Wonderous ways be an inspiration
To place all trust in you.
Let Joseph’s courage provide home
During times of anxiety and uncertainty.
Let Jesus’ life ignite all families with
A spirit of light and love.
May the grace that encircled the
Holy Family widen to embrace all families.

Faith and Mission
Sport’s Week Fundraising
During Sports Week held earlier this year, Avila students raised funds for St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in South West Sunshine.
This week Sport Captains Hannah Faraone and Abi Goullet visited the school to present them with the sports equipment purchased from the monies raised. The primary school students were delighted!
Young Vinnies
During the last few weeks the
Young Vinnies group has been busy collecting stationery and books to make up some study packs ready
for the 2018 year. These packs will be sent to Dandenong and Doveton where St Vincent de Paul run tutoring groups for refugee students.
Christmas Hampers
As is tradition the girls have been generous in their collection of Christmas food for St Vincent de Paul. These food items will be put together as hampers to share with those in need in our community.
Year 9 Avila Mazenod Day Sharing Our Stories.
Year 9 students from Avila and Mazenod shared in a day of fun, re ection and discussion, centred
on the Gospel values shared by both schools. Throughout the day the students worked in small groups to complete a range of challenges and to engage in conversation.

Learning and Teaching
Presentation Evening
It was a delight to see so many
parents and students at Presentation Evening on Monday 27 November.
The auditorium at Monash University was full as we acknowledged and congratulated students from years 7 to 12 on their academic achievements in 2017.
The format of the evening was changed this year to recognize a broader range of learners, both students and staff, and to celebrate the diversity of learning achievements so that students are inspired to strive for excellence.
HeadStart
Last week students undertaking VCE, VCAL or VET units in 2018 were involved in the HeadStart program designed to provide a genuine introduction to their senior studies.
All students undertook three lessons in each of their semester one subjects. This assists students to become familiar with the expectations of the subject and to make a serious start on their learning.
Students have been set holiday homework that builds on the teaching and learning from the HeadStart program.
As a consequence of the HeadStart program, a few students may decide that they have chosen a subject that is not the best t for them.
In some cases, students may realize that the subject will require more or different learning than expected. They are urged to discuss such concerns both with their parents and teachers before the end of this week.
Parents can be crucial in encouraging resilience in the students at this point. However, experience shows us that, for some students, a subject change may be necessary.
These students should contact
Mrs Franken as soon as possible to ascertain whether a subject change may be feasible.
Subject change requests are limited by class size or clashes in the timetable grid. Not all subject change requests may be possible but it is de nitely better to check earlier rather than leave it until after the holidays.
Students making subject changes will be expected to catch up, not only on the learning missed in HeadStart, but also with all the holiday homework that has been set.

Active and authentic learning
This week students from years 7 to 9 are engaged in learning in many different yet authentic ways.
Year 7 students have been undertaking a World Integrated Unit. This program has been developed by teachers at Avila not only to extend the students’ Civics and Citizenship knowledge and skills, but also to provide an opportunity for students to work in different teams on a project with real world application.
Students work in teams to determine who will be their Head of State, Treasurer and Chief Electoral Of cer. Students have taken on different responsibilities
such as ag making, national dress design and construction, song composition, choreography, and social media advising. They have determined a name for their ctitious country and developed a pro le
of the country that includes geographic and lifestyle facts.
Following some initial input from expert teachers, students are developing a language, food or drink, animal, advertisement and website for their country.
Over the course of the week, students have been applying their mathematical skills to complete a number of currency exchanges and using social media to promote their country’s achievements. Their talent, energy and enthusiasm will culminate in nal presentations to their year level and staff on Thursday.
Year 8
students have undertaken various learning activities such as preparing
for next year’s camp by learning how to set up and cook with trangias; appreciating Australian Indigenous culture; learning about
robotics from Robogals; using forensic science to investigate a crime; following maths clues to complete an amazing race and learning about the effects of alcohol on the body.
Year 9 students have been preparing for work experience through participation in two careers days with career building activities, a visit to a local TAFE and completion of mandatory Safe at Work certi cates. Year 9s have also enjoyed the opportunity to mix with the boys from Mazenod College for a combined Re ection Day.
The week will conclude with year level assemblies, sharedmorningteasandanAdventEucharist. Students are engaged in valuable learning each day and will be ready for a well earned holiday by the end of the week.
Examination Feedback
Careful review and re ection on examination performance provides a rich learning opportunity. Year 9 students were given feedback from their English, Maths and Science teachers during class time.
Students in Years 10 and 11 should collect their marked exams from the Hall between 11am-12pm on Monday 11 December. The 2017 Avila yearbook will also be available at the same time. Any uncollected exams will be available during business hours from the General Of ce until 14 December only.
Semester Reports
Reports for students from years 7 to 11 will be released to parents from 2pm Thursday 14 December. An email alert will be sent to parents to advise when reports have been uploaded to PAM.
VCE Units 3 & 4 results from the VCAA will be issued on Friday 15 December. Year 12 students have been given details of how to access their results via the internet. In a change from previous years, there will be no SMS results service this year. Year 12 students are also reminded that should they wish to discuss a change of tertiary preference, Ms Jenny Dunn and Ms Geraldine McKenna will be available in the Careers Hub from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 December.
Booklists
Families are reminded that Campion booklist orders lodged by last Thursday 30 November may be collected from Campion staff in the Gathering Space at Avila on Tuesday 23 January 2018 between 9am and 2pm. Alternatively, parents can select to have their orders home delivered. Uncollected orders will not be retained at the College after 23 January.
We wish all families a very joyful and peace- lled Christmas and a relaxing summer holiday.

Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Pastoral Care
Resources and Links
As the school year comes to a close and we are on the countdown to summer holidays a reminder of the many resources that are available for students and parents.
One such support is the Student Wellbeing Hub produced by Education Services Australia. It is an online point of reference for educators, parents and students who want to nd information, resources and advice to support the wellbeing of everyone in the school community.
“We know that when students are respected, supported and feel safe, their wellbeing and learning outcomes improve”.
A local service on our doorstep is ‘Monash Youth Services’ who provide free events, programs, and services, including counselling, to young people living, working and or at school in the City of Monash.
They also offer a range of activities and events that are planned and developed by young people including music, volunteering and lm festival programs.

Self Love Week
On Tuesday the 28th of November the Students Create The Future Committee celebrated the launch of Self Love Week.
This new student centred initiative aimed to promote body positivity and self love. The idea was devised following the analysis of the Resilient Youth Survey, which indicated an improvement was necessary
in the way students perceive themselves and their sense of hope for the future.
The week began with a collective atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. The committee wrote inspirational quotes and self love messages on mirrors in student and staff bathrooms, on windows and glass doors.
Quotes on purple love hearts were hidden around the school for students to nd and keep. St Teresa’s Garden and then the junior school area was transformed into an inclusive, non-judgemental environment for all Avila students.
There was uplifting music lling the air, face paint, lollies, heart stickers and high con dence amongst not only students but also teachers.
One of the major activities of the week was the video booth which encouraged students to make a short statement about an aspect of themselves that they love. By doing this we wanted ‘loving yourself’ to be accepted by the students and we wanted students to be encouraged to identify the aspects of themselves which they did love.
Instead of criticism and loathing towards self, we aimed for a positive view which we achieved through this thought provoking initiative. The response we received was phenomenal as evident in the video.

Public Speaking
12
Thank you to the Mt Waverley Rotary Club
Sinead Kelly, Mieke De Vries and Anna Zhang delivered detailed and thoughtful accounts of their participation in Rotary Competitions in Term 4.
They are grateful to this generous club for the support opportunities they have offered the students which have helped them to develop their Public Speaking and Leadership skills.
Sinead commented on her increased
con dence and self=belief; Anna commented
on her increased understanding of the need for communication and trust in leadership; whereas Mieke focused on the importance of relationships in delivering effective leadership.
Avila has been fortunate to have a relationship
with Mt Waverley Rotary Club. They have a program that provided medical treatment for serious health cases in Timor Leste through people giving them:
a) Used stamps
b) Left over coins from overseas trips
c) Those 5 cent pieces that weigh down your pockets.
If anyone would like to donate any of these to help out please deliver them to Mrs Valladares at Avila.

Collar Companion
Technology for a Social Good
Last weekend, I had the privilege of observing ve of our students work as a team to create a prototype of a promising device that could help people with various disabilities.
Working with Emma and Daniel, their mentors from the University of Melbourne, Jessica Bishop, Sasheka Justin, Chloe Luk, Kate Tidswell and Sara Whitehead competed in Superhack 2017, a hackathon for school girls in Years 10 and 11.
The product they designed, named Collar Companion, would attach an internet-connected buzzer to the collar of an assistance dog and a wristband to the dog’s owner.
When signs of distress are detected by the wrist band, such as a rise in the owner’s temperature or blood pressure, a buzzer would alert the dog to respond appropriately.
In their prototype, they simulated such a situation by monitoring the owner’s twitter account. When the word “sad” was detected in a tweet sent by the owner, a buzzer went off and the message “human owner is depressed” was displayed on the screen.
Re ecting on their experience, Team AvEng (see what we did there?) said that they were inspired to study engineering and that they were happy to experience working as a time in an of ce environment.
I was particularly impressed by the focus which they displayed once they began building their prototype and preparing their presentation.
They managed to identify the market for their product really well and to demonstrate a working prototype.
One of the competitors, Sara, summarised her assessment of the envent with the following words: "Over this experience, we learnt that
we can apply technology in a large range of situations such as farming and disabilities. We greatly bene ted from this event as it allowed us to gain industry experiences".
I hope that the hackathon runs again next
year, so that more of our students could have this experience, hopefully without the extreme weather conditions that threatened to derail this year’s event.

Shared Stories Anthology
This Year Avila College celebrated its eighth year of participating in the Shared Stories Anthology. Avila College students from Year 7 to 12 were asked to submit work that is based on the theme ‘Journey’.
This wonderful collection of writing and art afforded our students the opportunity to express their ideas in writing, allowing students to develop insights and creativity drawing on personal journeys, life experiences and family journeys.
There was great interest in the opportunity, with an excess of thirty pieces of work submitted by our budding writers; twenty one of these were chosen for the publication.
The successful students, along with their parents, attended the November launch with over 1000 guests from the 25 Catholic Schools involved in the project.
