Achievement is an interesting word to think about. It sparks
emotion and pride as well as an inclination to visualise a
checklist of things done.

A prayer
for asylum
seekers and
refugees

Wise and compassionate God,
help us to bear the burdens
refugees and asylum-seekers
carry and not simply seek to shift
the burden onto others.

Call our leaders to justice,
generosity and compassion.
Help them create and implement
strategies that are fair and just
and treat refugees and asylum-
seekers with dignity and care.

O God, our comforter, we ask you
to comfort the broken-hearted
and protect the vulnerable.

We pray for those who live in
fear of detention and removal,
for those who are in detention at
this time and for those who face
removal to an uncertain future.

We ask you to assure them of
your great love, surround them
with your presence and fill them
with your peace.

God bless our eyes so that we
will recognise injustices.

God bless our ears so that we
will hear the cry of the stranger.

God bless our mouths so that we
will speak words of welcome to
newcomers.

God bless our shoulders so we
will be able to bear the weight of
struggling for justice.

God bless our hands so that we
can work together with all people
to establish peace.

Amen.

teach us about the dignity

interesting story that inspired many of
Reconciliation Vice Captain us. Abdi told us about what he has gone
through, which was very hard to fathom
4 that some humans have had to go
through that at such a young age.

Abdi’s story was interesting but he also
threw some humour into his talk and
made all of us laugh. We really enjoyed
listening to him and it definitely taught
us a lot and gave us a deeper insight
into what we have been learning in
class. I recommend reading Abdi’s book
‘Shining: The Story of a Lucky Man’ which
gives a detailed description of what he
went through as a young boy on his road
to refuge in Australia.

Effective
Teachers

At Avila we are proud of
the skills, talents and
commitment that our
teaching staff bring to our
learning community.
We recognise that our
teachers have different
styles, methods and
delivery as they bring their
curriculum to life in the
classroom and engage
students in learning.
Yet, across a diverse range
of disciplines and study
areas, they share a common
goal - to support, educate
and inspire students to
achieve their best.
This article from the
“Knowing Girls” website
is an interesting read and
reiterates the practices
that we value and nurture
at Avila, including the
encouragement of all
parents to be involved in
the learning process.

How work experience at two different hospitals

It was interesting to Over the last month, I was lucky enough to have two

life is compared to Since it was nearby to where I live and it was during the school holidays,
school life. I was dropped there for that week. I was assigned to the Support Services
Department, so I completed tasks such as running errands for the nurses and
28 administrative staff, working in the pharmacy, delivering mail to the suites
in the hospital, managing deliveries in logistics, assisting with calls at the
communications switchboard, preparing food and cleaning the rooms of the
patients. The staff were incredibly friendly and always found a way to make
sure I was enjoying myself. As I had never done work experience before I didn’t
know what to expect, and to be honest, it was quite different to what I thought
it would be. However, I still ended up learning so much about the hospital and
its staff and it opened my eyes about how much work goes into making sure
each patient is cared for properly.

Royal Women’s Hospital Open Days

My second work experience was at the Royal Deakin University
Women’s Hospital. The term ‘over the moon’ is an
understatement of how I felt after being accepted, For more information go to https://www.

about all the different ways I can achieve my goal of
being a doctor as well. The last and biggest difference Box Hill Campus
was how involved I was in this placement with assisting
the patients. I was assigned to a midwife to follow for Sunday 25 August | 10am - 3pm
the entire day and was allowed to help her and her
patients if they needed. The hardest part of the job
would be the amount of walking in this profession.
I definitely underestimated how fit you had to be in
order to do a job like this. Although, not to be extremely
sappy or anything, all the exhaustion does disappear
as soon as you see the babies. I was fortunate enough
to help do the daily checkups for some of the babies
and occasionally help bathe them. It was truly amazing
to be part of such a significant time in a parent’s life. All
the midwives and patients were extremely welcoming
and I am so grateful that they took the time to teach
and let me be part of something so special.

Both weeks were such fantastic experiences. I learned
about the good, the bad and the ugly of working in
the field of Medicine, and fortunately, I am even more
motivated and determined to work in this field when
I finish my studies. I would definitely recommend any
younger students who are also interested in Medicine
to apply for work experience at hospitals as well, as it
really helps you to understand the scope of these jobs
better.
