GREEN WASHING

- SADHANA S, III YEAR - BT

WHAT IS GREENWASHING ?

When companies invest more time and money on marketing their products as
'green' or ‘eco friendly’, rather than doing the actual work towards achieving
sustainable development goals, it is referred to as greenwashing.
In most cases, greenwashing is carried out intentionally by the companies to
attract more customers in the name of being environmentally friendly; but in rare
cases, there have also been instances where companies genuinely think that their
products are eco-friendly and promote the wrong information.
In recent years, as more and more people are becoming aware of sustainability,
environmental awareness and eco-friendly, organic products the big brands are
starting to worry.
What if they lose all the customers to small, cottage industries that honestly put in
the effort and time to make the right products? What if customers start noticing
how the companies have been neglecting the workplace conditions, employing
child labourers and not paying them the minimum wages?
These are some of the reasons why companies have started to put tons of money,
time and effort into advertising their brands and deceiving their customers by
adding labels that read ‘100% organic’, ‘sustainable product’, etc.

creating a story about the product, all of us can spend some into the verification

THE DEATH OF

BITCOIN

- SHIVA RAM VS , III YEAR BT

Cryptocurrency is a digital medium of
exchange based on cryptographic methods
using a decentralised mechanism. Initially,
economists didn't accept cryptocurrencies
due to their transparent and independent
nature. It rose to the limelight after Elon
Musk's Tesla invested in $1.5 billion worth of
Bitcoin. Also, when Elon tweeted that Tesla
would be accepting payments for their cars
in Bitcoin, it attained the next level of
popularity. The announcement came as a big
cheer for the crypto community, and many
new investors entered the market. An
institutional giant such as Tesla backing the
game boosted its credibility. Soon after he
announced this, Bitcoin reached its all-time
high price of 58,000$.

Coming to the current scenario, Elon Musk
recently announced that Tesla would stop
accepting Bitcoin as a payment for its
products. The carbon footprint behind the
bitcoin mining process proves to have
adverse effects on speeding up the climate
crisis. The system uses high powered
supercomputers to process complex
mathematical equations. Supercomputers are
ever energy-hungry and need vast amounts
of electricity to work. China approximately
accounts for more than 75% of the world's
Bitcoin mining. The dominance of Chinese
miners adds pressure on Chinese electricity
production, which is primarily coal. Coal, in
turn, is one of the most harmful fossil fuels as
it releases abundant amounts of CO2 into the
atmosphere.
