INTRODUCTION

ASSIGNMENT 1B - ARCHITECTURE ANALYSIS REPORT

This assignment's aim is to objectively analyse and distinguish significant architectural concepts from
historical buildings in terms of architectural architecture.

The student should choose a building in Malaysia that has a clear application of Classical architecture
features and analyse building materials, space, openings, illumination, ambiance, size, proportion,
and composition. The student should then perform a comparative comparison between two buildings
and substantiate these findings with drawings, diagrams, and other sources of knowledge such as
observations, remarks, and analysis.

INFORMATION

The church is known more as Salisbury Cathedral
The structure is considered to be one of the most
significant examples of Early English Gothic
architecture. From 1220 to 1258, the main body of
the system was completed in 38 years. Since 1561,
the spire, which was built in 1320 and stands at 404
feet (123 metres), has become the tallest church
spire in the United Kingdom. The "Tower Walk"
allows travellers to see the inside of the hollow
spire, which contains ancient wooden scaffolding.
With an area of 80 acres, the cathedral has the
largest cloister and cathedral close in the United
Kingdom. It houses the best surviving of the four
original versions of Magna Carta, as well as one of
the world's oldest operating clocks. The 750th
anniversary of the cathedral's consecration was
commemorated in 2008.

BULDING MATERIALS

Church of St Anthony Salisbury Cathedral

The unique material which is discovered in the Purplish Purbeck marble is used to construct the
church is the use of granite. Indians very much use column shaft. The dark purplish Purbeck marble
granite especially in constructing temples. Since the blends well with the wood which is deeply covered
church is built for the Tamilians for spiritual need, and gives an old, antique feel at the same time it
the use of granites is applied as the base of the elevate the space from looking very pale
columns. He remaining columns are made out of
concrete.

SPACE PLANING Salisbury Cathedral

Church of St Anthony

The Church is structured in a way where it is built FIGURE 5
around the Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre (APC),
Stella Maris School and Cahaya Suria This church stands by itself without any buildings
Communication Centre which gives the cosy feel around mostly. It allows people to experience in
the church structure in a different way without having so many
building congesting around the church

AMBIANCE Salisbury Cathedral

Church of St Anthony

The ambiance that is experienced in both St Anthony and Salisbury Cathedral are very similar. The space
especially the tall ceiling makes the space more open which allows people to be more free and relaxed without
feeling sophisticated in the space. The minimal usage of the colour enhances the openness of the space by
visually giving the brightness which can be linked to the pureness and enlightenment that makes people to feel
more connected and experience the presence of God.

SCALE 123 m

The scale is definitely
something that is seen as the
major difference in both the
structures. The ratio between
the human and St Anthony
Church is about 20 times
bigger than the human. As for
the Salisbury Cathedral, the
ration is more than twice the
size of St Anthony reaching the
height of 123 meter.

1.80 m Salisbury Cathedral
Human Church of St Anthony

PROPOTIONS Salisbury Cathedral

Church of St Anthony

Both churches are designed in a way where it is proportioned in a perfectly balanced symmetric. It may vary in
terms of the placements of the statues but the basic structure on the building is very symmetric. The most
obvious proportion which is noticed in both the building is the floor plan

STRUCTURES Salisbury Cathedral

Church of St Anthony

FIGURE

Arches are commonly used in gothic architecture especially from a column to another column. Similar archers
found in both St Anthony and Salisbury Cathedral where these arches are found in not only between the columns
but on windows and also doors. The only difference between these arches is Salisbury Cathedral used more
repetitive arches in different sizes and levels and St Anthony did not use aches as much as Salisbury Cathedral.

CONCLUSION

• In conclusion, St Anthony Church and Salisbury Cathedral they both share the
same ancient architecture which is Gothic. Though there are some adaptation
made in St Anthony Church, the design intention was inspired by gothic
architecture. Throughout the journey while doing this assignment, I had the
opportunity to visit the St Anthony Church. The experience of visiting definitely
motivated me to do more research on the Building I took
