About Baldwin House
We believe that the original house was built during the late 1700’s. Baldwin House
is the end of a terrace of four houses. Originally, the main entrance door was
located on the side of the house – where the large arch is in Reception today:
In the 1800’s a further building was added, forming a full height Victorian Drawing
Room, which is now our glorious Breakfast Room and also a full height Victorian
Ballroom on the first floor. The Ballroom was accessed through double doors and
an archway, through the wall that is now part of Room 6 and The Mitton. We
believe that The Mitton, on the first floor, was infact a lounge/Smoking Room –
from where they would have had access to the Ballroom and the front balcony.
The original Ballroom ceiling is still visible through a loft hatch in one of our
laundry rooms – please ask, if you are interested, we would be delighted to show
you!
The original ceiling rose from the Ballroom was relocated and is now on the ceiling
in our Breakfast Room.
Each terrace house was originally built with a three story Coach House to the rear.
Our Coach House is now let separately from the main Guest House and can be
seen on the left hand side of the main windows in the Breakfast Room.
Much of the house is still original, however there was a major fire in the early 1980’s
during which the roof and floor structures of the Drawing Room and bedroom
above were lost, requiring rebuilding
BALDWIN HOUSE GUEST HOUSE
The floor structures above and below The Mitton have also been replaced (circa:
1980’s) maybe indicating that there was some level of disrepair or even deriliction
in the 1960’s/70’s to parts of the original house.
In the 1800’s this was the home of Thomas Baldwin, who owned iron foundries
and metal pressing factories here in Stouport. Foundry Street is located at the far
end of Lombard Street and the loading dock onto the side of the canal can still be
seen from the canal towpath. There were also iron works at Wilden, a short walk
from Baldwin House.
Thomas Baldwin was the great grandfather of Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime
Minister between the two World Wars. The Baldwin family originated in
Shropshire, and populated Stourport and Bewdley where they established
businesses in the Iron industry.
Sometime during the mid 1900’s Baldwin House, together with it’s adjoining
properties, were operated as a private boarding school. Some evidence of this can
still be found in loft spaces where the higher sections of walls are still painted in
“school” pastel shades.
The Guest House business here was established in the late 1980’s. In the 1990’s
ownership passed to a local family, and then again in the early 2000’s. We
purchased Baldwin House as a going concern in 2015 and embarked on an
extensive redecoration and upgrade program.
Today, the Guest House boasts nine guest rooms, most with their own en-suite
facilities. Two of the rooms are Deluxe, and offer en-suite jacuzzi hot tub
bathrooms. Room 6 retains the private balcony to the front of the house which
used to be the front of the Ballroom.
Baldwin House Guest House is one of three “Baldwin House’s” known to us here
in Stourport! – One of the other ones is a small shopping parade at the top of
Lombard Street.

C
Canal Basins – Just at the end of Lichfield Street, you will reach Stourport’s Canal basins, this is where
the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal meets the river Severn. The canal runs underneath York Street,
and into the upper basin. From here, canal craft can descend through either wide beam or narrow beam
locks to the lower basins and then to the River Severn beyond.
Many canal craft are moored in the basins, set against the back drop of Stourport Yacht Club – with its
iconic white clock tower. The building is Grade 2 listed.
You will also see, The Tontine, originally built as a Georgian hotel to accommodate the many business
and trades people who used the river, canal and Stourport’s basins for commerce. The Tontine became
private flats, operating in an old English system called a Tontine. This form of property ownership was
eventually outlawed, as it saw members of a Tontine benefit by assuming the shares of other Tontine
members upon their deaths.
Later The Tontine was operated as a public house, many visitors to BALDWIN HOUSE GUEST
HOUSE (of a certain age) tell us that they held their 21st birthday celebrations at The Tontine Today
The Tontine consists of privately owned flats and town houses.

BALDWIN HOUSE GUEST HOUSE
Stourport-on-Severn – The town was a thriving Georgian port town, with much commerce being
transacted around the canal basins, where the canal meets the River Severn.
In later years it became an inland “seaside resort” for Birmingham. Connected by a mainline railway (now
removed). The residents of Birmingham used to descend on Stourport-on-Severn for high days and
holidays. The Swan Hotel used to offer 20-30 Guest Bedrooms, and across the river on the southern side,
there is still to this day, static caravan park after static caravan park, where many Birmingham residents
still do maintain a holiday home. With the advent of family motor cars, the railway declined and was
finally taken out of service. Part of the old railway track/route, now forms a very pretty walk from the canal
(just past The Bird in Hand) and out across a large, very high viaduct, crossing Wilden Lane and beyond.
Stourport also had much industry, with several carpet factories, a vinegar works (which can still be seen
on the riverside) and its very own power station – which is now reduced to a riverside field, but still good
for walking dogs!
T
Taxi: We recommend REGENCY TAXI, telephone: 01562-66666 from your smartphone and they will
send you a link, where you can “see” your taxi tracking towards your location.
We can also recommend: CENTRAL TAXI, telephone: 01562-51 51 31.
The Royal British Legion – Is right next door to BALDWIN HOUSE GUEST HOUSE, at the end of
Lichfield Street. You are welcome to use their car park, during your stay with us, at no additional charge
to you. You will also be welcome to use their club bar and lounge (The Long Bar), where bar food is
served most Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at very reasonable prices. They also keep
an excellent cellar and their ales and drinks are the cheapest in Stourport! Pop in and mention that you
are staying at BALDWIN HOUSE GUEST HOUSE.
U
Umbrellas – There is a selection of umbrellas that you are welcome to borrow, in the Umbrella stand, in
reception. Please return after use.
Did you know, the umbrella stand in reception is a BALDWIN ORIGINAL umbrella stand,
made of cast iron at Thomas Baldwin’s Iron Foundry in Stourport-on-Severn!
V
Vegetarian and Vegans
– Please let us know your dietary requirements and we will do our best to accommodate these within the
meals we provide to you. We would much rather meet your specific requirements than offer everybody
a “plain” vegetarian option.
BALDWIN HOUSE GUEST HOUSE
W

a spectacular day out for adults and children alike. We advertise West Midlands Safari Park extensively
in our reception area, where you can find the latest information about attractions and ticket prices.

Pubs – Our Recommendations
There are many pubs in and around Stourport-on-Severn. We have listed here, our personal favourites
with the reasons why they are our favourites!
The Hollybush – A very short walk around the corner from BALDWIN HOUSE GUEST HOUSE in
Mitton Street. A spectacular real ale tavern, offering a selection of 4-5 guest ales (changed very regularly),
and their own Black Country Ales craft beers (three: Pig on the wall, BFG and Fireside). Bar snacks,
including pork pies and pastries with pickles are on offer too. Upstairs – Sports bar with Sky-Sports TV,
and a rear elevated garden for al-fresco drinking. Perfect.
The Angel Inn – Riverside, with spectacular views across the river Severn. Watch the world float by on
glorious summer days from their front garden. Excellent beers offered by Marstons/Bankss. Recently
refurbished bars (two, saloon and lounge). Kay is your landlady, she will assist with your drinks selections.
Food offered during the day.
The Hope & Anchor – Newly opened, in New Street (across the High Street from BALDWIN HOUSE),
this is Matt Worley’s second venue in Stourport. Semi-industrial “SteamPunk” themed pub. Offering an
excellent selection of ales and unique beverages, with inside and out seating areas.
Worley’s The Swan – Top of the High Street, live music venue, fantastic bands and artistes perform here
each week. Real “music” themed bar area. Attached, is Mimi’s Bistro, offering excellent fayre throughout
the day.
The Olde Beams – Dunley Road, Across the Bridge, turn left – A large country inn offering a wide
selection of good beers and beverages. Also, food served daily from an extensive menu. Large garden
with seating, away from the main road.
The Olde Crown Inn – Bridge Street, near the river bridge. Wetherspoons “rebadged” – need we say
more, but offering good value for money food and beverages.
