Falling Rupee and the

Vicious Cycle

How have the IT sector and the depreciating rupee influenced each other?

DR ARCHANA VERMA

Today, the value of US Fall of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar in last 1 Year

been falling regularly and 4 A CyberMedia Publication
is at the all-time lowest
in a year. This has several
repercussions on the IT business,
especially the segment which relies on
imported IT products and selling them
in the Indian market, or even those who
imports technology for manufacturing
their products in India.

Another big fall out of the falling
rupee is that the Indian clients have
diminishing purchasing power. The
businesses can no longer depend upon
the Indian market to sell their products.
A third element is that the inflation rises
with the falling rupee. Hence, the Indian
clients can’t continue to purchase IT
products and services.

In short, when a currency’s demand
in the market increases, its value rises.
When its demand falls, its depreciates.
The increase or decrease may depend
upon the volume of exports vs imports,
debt from the international agencies on
the country, inflation rate etc.

arise anytime to derail the laptop industry and practically all IT

Some MNCs took heed from this and opened their

on its heels, HP announced its partnership with Flex in Tamil

There are some laptop making companies in India. But

DR ARCHANA VERMA RITU SRIVASTAVA

[email protected]

Which patents have you got and what techs have they innovated?

Lightbulb is an emotion AI platform whose horizontal emotion and engagement
offerings cut across a wide range of vertical industry segments, and it currently has 4
patents in the pipeline, focused on capturing emotion cues to assess teacher quality
in online learning to monitoring lead quality in sales enablement to qualitative
assessment in market research to soft skills training for recruitment tech. More are
in the pipeline as well.

What problems do these patents solve?

Lightbulb is geared to help businesses that offer remote user experiences, to
solve for higher engagement by mapping user emotion and engagement in real-
time. From analysing user engagement during live meetings/calls to researching
the emotional impact of pre-recorded content and asynchronous user experiences
on consumers, Lightbulb’s key USP is offering customized & nuanced solutions that
are relevant to industries such as online learning, sales enablement and consumer
research amongst others.

What is the adoption graph of these patents – in metros and in
non-metros, by the small and large enterprises?

Lightbulb‘s current products are targeted towards mid-sized enterprises in
the segments of online learning, consumer research and sales enablement. Each
patent is use-case or industry specific and embedded into the core technology and
processes of the LB platform for emotion recognition and engagement analytics.

How cost-intensive is an AI-ML-based data analytics

For solving any data-driven business problems, financial institutions
require multi-disciplinary skills – subject matter expert, data scientist,

Name:
Neeraj Agrawal
Designation:
Owner
Company:
Nimbus Computer
Location:
Kolkata

How’s the computer business going in the Eastern India
this year?

Its good but could have been better. We are basically finding it difficult
to compete with the major online platforms. The online sale has restricted
the volume of sales of offline business.

What are the challenges in this business?

As mentioned, the online has restricted the volume and all the variants
of laptop are available online as compared to offline.

Has the falling value of rupee affected your business?

Yes, currently in components and peripherals segments the rupee
devaluation has adversely impacted the business. Besides, I’m sure
the laptop OEMs will also increase the prices soon. This will further
complicate the problems at the resellers’ end, as they will have to face the
devaluation of rupee in an increasing prices environment.

As the new President of COMPASS, what main challenges
do you see before yourself?

Unfortunately, due to COVID we were not able to move out and
intermingle. This restricted us to mutually benefit from our IT fraternity.
But this time we wouldrecoup the losses made during those 2 years
and have an enhanced communication this year. The motto of this
year will be CCC – Compass, Connects and Channel. We will engage
andcommunicate with Principal Companies, T1, T2, T3 constantly for
betterment of IT Industry. This year we will also partner with various
district and national associations.

With our reinvigorated endeavours, we hope to gain in our business
and see rising growth.
