HUMAN RESOURCES CORNER

“In 2018, our mission to care for and
improve human life was amplified by
your support of one another through
the HCA Hope Fund. Because of your
generosity, the Hope Fund was able
to help 3,762 families last year and
more than 34,000 families since the
inception of the fund. Every day more
than a dozen members of our HCA
Healthcare family find themselves
needing help when faced with an
unexpected hardship. I am very proud
of our HCA Healthcare family and
how we care for one another through
the Hope Fund.”

InFocus: Blind and Low Vision

20 Million Americans (8% of the U.S. population)
are blind or have low vision; this number is
expected to double within the next 30 years.
Low vision, including blindness, is one of the
leading causes of loss of independence among
people 65 or older.
Low vision is caused by four main conditions:
cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and
diabetic retinopathy.
Low vision is a condition that cannot be completely
corrected by glasses, contact lenses, medication,
or surgery.

THE MONTH

Compared to those who do not have low vision,
people who have low vision are more limited in
their activities, including paid work and social
engagements.
People with low vision generally use more health
care services and experience higher out-of-
pocket health care costs than those who do not
have low vision.
Costs related to blindness/low vision total about
$40 billion per year in the U.S., with medical costs
accounting for almost 60%–$22 billion–of the total
cost.
