Common COVID-19 Vaccine Questions Answered
Question: #1: Were the vaccines rushed and shortcuts taken?
mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna) technology is new in vaccine development but has been studied for other uses for more than a
decade.
mRNA technology was previously used to develop vaccines against Zika, CMV, influenza and rabies, all of which went through
human trials and were found to be safe (CDC1).
Adenovirus viral vector (Johnson & Johnson) technology has been used to develop a successful Ebola vaccine (CDC4)
Went through same rigorous safety procedures (e.g., internal review boards, scientist review, independent advisory
committees) as ALL FDA approved vaccines- NO SHORTCUTS!
Had over 70,000 (Moderna & Pfizer) and over 44,000 (Johnson & Johnson) individuals safely participate in the trials before
receiving Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the FDA.
Question: #2: Does mRNA somehow rearrange my DNA?
mRNA is injected into your muscle, usually the upper arm and enters into the cytoplasm (the water part) of your muscle
cells, where it triggers your body to produce protective antibodies to the COVID “spike protein.”
It does not (and cannot) enter into the nucleus, where our DNA is housed (CDC1).
mRNA vaccines do not contain any of the key enzymes necessary for mRNA to be converted to or inserted in DNA.
mRNA is broken down and eliminated after it is used by the cell (CDC1).

Common COVID-19 Vaccine Questions Answered
Question: #3: Can vaccines induce sterility in women?
Infertility is not identified as an adverse outcome from natural COVID-19 infection, and is therefore not expected to be an
adverse outcome from COVID-19 vaccination (FDA).
Male or female Infertility is not identified as an adverse outcome in any of the COVID-19 vaccine trials performed to date
(CDC2).
ACOG recommends vaccination of individuals who are actively trying to become pregnant or are contemplating pregnancy
and meet the criteria for vaccination based on ACIP prioritization recommendations. Additionally, it is not necessary to delay
pregnancy after completing both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine (ACOG).
There is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines cause an increased risk of infertility (ACOG). Concerns found in popular media
linking COVID-19 vaccines to infertility, touting the dangers of "the spike protein," or vaccine antibodies attacking attacking
the placenta have not been established in research (CDC1).

Common COVID-19 Vaccine Questions Answered
Question: #4: If I am pregnant (or trying), can the vaccines be harmful for my unborn child?
Pregnant women are NOT usually included in initial trials for vaccines or medications including the COVID-19 vaccine.
However, some women enrolled in the vaccine trials did become pregnant, and no maternal or fetal adverse events linked to
the COVID-19 vaccines have been reported in these women.
Forthcoming safety data in pregnant individuals who have received the COVID-19 vaccine are available from vaccine
manufacturers and the CDC’s V-safe Program. To date, there have been no identified safety concerns or pregnancy risks
associated with vaccination. The current V-safe data from over 3,900 pregnant women show that the rates of adverse
pregnancy outcomes are similar to normal background rates of these events in the general population (SMFM11).
Pregnant women are at an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19 including respiratory failure, need for mechanical
ventilation (or ECMO), and death. There may also be an increased incidence of adverse outcomes of pregnancy, including
preterm births and stillbirths (CDC2). The clinical efficacy of vaccination is high in pregnant individuals. SMFM recommends
vaccination as the best method to decrease maternal and fetal complications associated with COVID-19 infection (SMFM11).
Future clinical trials will look specifically at outcomes in pregnant women who receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Pregnant women are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider if they are pregnant or are considering pregnancy.
Pregnant women should routinely and safely receive vaccines that are not live viruses, e.g. annual flu and Tdap. The mRNA
COVID vaccines are NOT live vaccines.

Should I Take the COVID-19 Vaccine?
Are there other vaccines
that help prevent me
from getting COVID-19?
There are currently no
available vaccines that will
prevent COVID-19. A flu
vaccine will not protect you
from getting COVID-19, but it
can prevent you from getting
influenza (flu) at the same
time as COVID-19. This can
keep you from having a more
severe illness.
62
HUMAN RESOURCES
Should I Take the COVID-19 Vaccine?
When should I not take the
vaccine? Individuals who have
underlying medical conditions may
still receive the COVID-19 mRNA
vaccines as long as they have no
contraindications to vaccination such
as a history of immediate or severe
allergic reaction to the COVID-19
vaccine or its ingredients. It is
important to speak with your
provider if you think you may have a
contraindication to the available
vaccines.
If you have other questions or are in
doubt… If you have any concerns,
speak with your provider.

The Importance of Appropriately Accessing PHI
Accessing electronic patient health information (PHI) for any reason other than a legitimate business/clinical purpose is an all-
around bad idea. Doing so places patient information and the company at risk, but it also puts you at risk. What might seem like
an innocent or quick look could actually be a policy violation requiring sanctions.
Minimum Necessary – The Requirements
In accordance with policy IP.PRI.003, Minimum Necessary, workforce members acting on behalf of the facility must always use
only the minimum amount of information necessary to accomplish the intended purpose of the access, use, and/or disclosure of
PHI.
Potential Violations – The Consequences
If you are inappropriately accessing patient records without a business/clinical need to know, then you are violating patients’
rights and/or policy. Examples of potential violations include, but are not limited to:
Inappropriately accessing a family member’s medical record
Inappropriately accessing another employee’s/coworker’s medical record
An employee accessing their own personal medical record
To identify where inappropriate access may be occurring, HCA North Cypress uses technology to monitor, document, and
report workforce members and physicians accessing more than the minimum PHI necessary to perform his or her designated
role regardless of the extent of access provided. If you are found to have inappropriately accessed information, you will be
sanctioned in accordance with our facility’s Sanctions for Privacy and Information Security Violations policy.

The Importance of Appropriately Accessing PHI
Your Actions – The Responsibility
As a workforce member, you have a responsibility to help protect our patients, our
workforce members and our company business.
Access only the minimum amount of information you need to do your job.
Don’t look at your medical records or those of co-workers, family, or friends.
If you know inappropriate access is occurring in our facility, report it to the FPO, Becky
Miller, 832-912-3533.
Before you decide to be curious and inappropriately access someone else’s PHI or even
your own, stop and say, “Is this the right thing to do?” Your answer will always be the
same – No!

Gift Limits Return to pre-COVID-19 Requirements
Throughout 2020, we witnessed many acts of kindness toward our
colleagues from their communities. Organizations wanted to provide
food donations and gifts to our front-line colleagues. Ethics and
Compliance relaxed the gift limits within the Gifts, EC.023 policy to
allow for these “thank you” type gifts.
We are lifting the exception to the limits and returning to the $75 per
year limits as detailed in the policy and the Code of Conduct.

New Phishing Testing Follow-Up Program
Effective January 1, Information Protection & Security is implementing an official phishing
testing follow-up program.
The more tests you fail (in one, 12-month rolling period), the more follow-up that occurs. The
goal is that colleagues are so well educated, we become an expert at catching phish and
reporting suspicious emails!
In 2020, HCA saw more legitimate cybersecurity threats than ever before. The FBI said that
imminent ransomware attacks were targeting healthcare companies. Ransomware is so scary
- it could shut down our entire organization and render us unable to care for our patients. The
Office of Civil Rights (OCR) announced numerous settlements related to cyber breaches -
and those can cost millions of dollars. The bottom line? We need every colleague to be able
to recognize and report a phishing email.
