Letter from the CEO

We desire to deliver an exceptional patient experience. You will hear me, Troy and others routinely speak of this. I wanted to take a
moment and share my thoughts on what I believe to be important.

Promptness: to the extent possible, care without unnecessary delay. I will assess this based on the length of my ED stay, was
my transition to the floor timely, was my diagnostic testing early in my stay, did specialty consults seem reasonable and occur at a
reasonable hour, and was I able to leave once a discharge order had been written.
Attentiveness: making sure my needs are anticipated. I will draw conclusions about this by whether or not my white board is
accurate, how often I see my nurse, whether or not the department leader dropped in on me, and the extent to which my pain was
controlled.
Clarity: to know what is occurring to me, by whom, why, and when. Additionally, I will judge this based on staff’s or my
physician’s willingness to answer my or my family’s questions about my care.
Minimal disruption: was the course of events surrounding my care sensible. My opinion of this will be formed by whether
or not the hallways were quiet at night, was the timing of my vital signs reasonable, and was I allowed to rest.
Respect: was I or my family welcome to participate in my care. I will gauge this by the receptivity to questions about my care
and the willingness of caregivers to engage my loved ones surrounding me.

In essence this seems simple; however, I acknowledge that it is easy to get lost in the complexity of what we do and the business that
surrounds us. Like I have done here, I encourage you to ask yourself “If I were a patient here, what would be important to
me?” While I know we all desire to create the best possible experience for our patient’s, I do think it is valuable for us to periodically
reflect on how we would judge our care.
