The North Cy-Press
A Monthly Employee Newsletter
June 2021
Letter from Jim Brown, CEO
Thank you for taking time to complete the Vital Voices Engagement Survey. This is a powerful tool to help us
continue to build a culture where our work is enjoyable and fulfilling.
I am pleased to share that at present, our Engagement Index has improved from 73 to 78. This is a higher level of
engagement than our company as a whole and slightly lower than our division. Nursing engagement has improved
from 60 to 71. This is a substantial improvement and can be seen in improving staff retention and overall patient
experience.
Once the survey is closed, my team will study your feedback and build an action plan to address areas of
concern. I’ll present the overall results and a high-level action plan during Town Halls this summer. Additionally,
your departmental results and action plans will be covered during your standing monthly department meetings. For
areas with the greatest opportunity to create a better work environment, I will plan to engage in a deeper discussion
with those teams.
How happy are you working at HCA North Cypress? Would you recommend HCA North Cypress to a friend? These
are powerful questions and the elements of the survey against which we are benchmarked to other hospitals. Not
only are they highly-relevant questions, they’re good principles on which to base our daily work. I hope you are
happy at HCA North Cypress and would recommend us to a friend. I hope that you feel good about working here
today and better when we ask next time based on our ongoing push to make this an enjoyable and fulfilling family-
like environment.

“While we were on lockdown, due to the freeze,
Valarie was supposed to be out on bereavement
leave. However, knowing the critical need of a

down and she manually had to do everything all
while there was an influx of calls internally and
externally from community members, physicians,
employees, family members and patients. Valarie

Behind the Mask: I am…
Week 6 - Story Winner
Behind the mask, I'm a single 35-year-old woman trying to find my way 13
through life. I am also a daughter, aunt, niece, sister, cousin, friend and
coworker. Unfortunately, I have experienced a number of personal
traumas in my 35 years. I believe these traumas are what have brought
me to want to help people. I don't want anyone to know how it feels to be
alone during a traumatic part of their life, as I did. My microbiology
professor in college was my mentor with whom I was her TA. As soon as
she mentioned that you could work in the lab professionally as a Medical
Technologist, I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to work
as part of a healthcare team that cared, comforted and worked hard to
help people. There's a saying in my field, "Without the lab, you're just
guessing." Honestly when it comes down to it, we give other professionals
pertinent information about the health of the patient... OUR patient. We
are a part of that team. Just because we don't see them, doesn't mean we
don't care. Behind the mask, I'm just a lab rat trying to keep safe, help
people, love people, know God and get results! - Carrie Bauske, MT
