Letter from Jim Brown, CEO
I am excited to share that HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress was recently named one of
the area’s “best places to work” by the Houston Chronicle. This is great validation of the work
environment that we are collectively working to create.
While I often write and speak about our commitment to “be the best”, I have long believed that
great patient experience, exceptional quality outcomes, an efficient system of care, and strong
teamwork all stem from each of us finding enjoyment and fulfillment in our individual work. When
we each like what we are doing and the people we depend on and feel good about the work
we do, it is much easier to focus on these broader goals. Because our aspirations are big and
broad, I am reassured that our foundation is strong. A positive and rewarding work environment
is critical to us achieving our full potential.
I can honestly say that I enjoy coming to work each day, care about the people with whom I am
blessed to work, and feel that I am making a difference. I hope that you can do the same and
will be disappointed if you cannot. In receiving this public acknowledgment from the Houston
Chronicle, it feels like we are on the right path.

QUALITY CORNER UPDATE 13
According to data collected by The Joint
Commission, ineffective communication is the
leading root cause for all reported sentinel events. As
we strive to delivery high Quality care, let’s review
two key communication tools:
SBAR
A framework for team members to effectively
communicate information to one another
Communicate the following information:
• Situation – What is going on with the patient?
• Background – What is the clinical background or
context?
• Assessment – What do I think the problem is?
• Recommendation – What would I recommend?

QUALITY CORNER UPDATE 14
ADA tip of the month:
Accommodating Persons with Limited English
Proficiency (LEP) policy requires that a qualified medical
interpreter be provided free of charge to all individuals
with LEP in order to ensure patient safety and effective
communication. Individuals with LEP have the right to
refuse a qualified medical interpreter and request that
a family or friend provide interpreting. Staff must
document in the medical record that assistance has
been provided, offered or refused by the use of the
form “Notice of Language Assistance Services” which is
attached to the Accommodating Persons with LEP
policy.

NURSING CORNER UPDATES 15
Did you know that HCA North Cypress has a variety of
modifications available to assist our patients with
hearing, seeing, and language needs? The items
available to be checked out via the AD office and
include: a bed shaker, a phone amplifier that enables
the phone to ring louder and/or the voice on the other
end to be amplified, an enlarged clock, a visual fire
alarm (same as outside of the room but will blink inside
as a visual que), a language line with iPods and special
phones.
Did you also know that therapy dogs come and visit our
patients? Faithful Paws is generally at our facility on the
second Wednesday of each month, arriving around 10
a.m. These amazing volunteers and their dogs provide
a fun, fuzzy and therapeutic visit to patients allowed to
have, and wishing for, a visit.

STELLAR SHOUT-OUTS TO THESE EMPLOYEES!
“Paul, ICU, took excellent care of my husband. We immediately recognized him as he took care of my
elderly Mom when she was here in April” stated by a Dr. Zamora patient and his wife while on MS3.
Suzanne, Physical Therapy, was overheard doing a great job of AIDET with a high acuity patient and
spouse. Excellent work!
Jeff, Emergency Department, offered patients a great, friendly check-in. Minutes later, he ran to assist with a
patient in triage (since he’s a new RN). Way to show great teamwork, Jeff!
Kemora, MS4, a real team player. Always has a smile on her face, outgoing and positive outlook, and willing
to lend a helping hand. If there’s a code, there’s a Kemora!
“Amy, ECC, provided excellent care, so much so that we begged to stay before being transferred up
here,” stated a Dr. Zamora patient.
“Everyone has taken great care of me, from the housekeepers to my doctors,” stated a Dr. Esantsi
patient. Great teamwork!

STELLAR SHOUT-OUTS TO THESE EMPLOYEES!
“Arthur, MS2, took excellent care of me. I had a sponge bath this morning and it made a world of
difference! I was a man who took 2 showers a day before all of this,” stated a Dr. Shepard patient.
“Coy, MS4, has been nothing but polite and courteous every time I have gone to the desk,” stated a Dr.
Chahal patient.
“We love Cheryl and Kim, MS4,” stated by a Dr. Zamora patient.
“Sylvia, MS2, has been excellent with her care for me,” stated a Dr. Wang patient.
“A’Llysia, Emergency Department, greeted us was a friendly smile and a calming attitude. She calmed our
fears,” stated by a patient transferred to MS5.
“David, MS3, has been on top of it for me. We really love the valet option now, too!” Stated by a patient
and his wife who have been coming to NC for years. They are pleased with everything and verbalized
positive changes, too.
