Letter from Jim Brown, CEO

I’d like to recognize our FANS team for their creativity and teamwork
during a recent power outage. Late in the afternoon on September 17th,
a car struck a nearby power pole damaging the transformer and
shutting off power to our campus. While we quickly converted to
generator power, our elevator service was disrupted. So that meals
were not delayed to our patients, our FANS team formed a human chain
from the kitchen up the stairs to the floors so that they could pass patient
trays to their intended destination. This spontaneous act prevented our
patients from experiencing a major inconvenience due to our loss of
power. I think that their teamwork and patient-centeredness can be an
example to us all. Great job!

HCA NORTH CYPRESS HOSPITAL UPDATES

Ray Please join me in welcoming Sterling Ray, MD, who has been appointed Chief
Officer of Medical Officer of HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood and North Cypress. Dr.
Ray comes to us from Austin where he has been the Associate Chief Medical
Officer of Sound Physicians for the past two years.

Dr. Ray’s appointment comes at an exciting time for both Kingwood and North
Cypress as we embark on multi-year, multi-million dollar efforts to expand our
facilities to offer even greater world-class medical care to our communities.
Through Dr. Ray’s leadership, we will focus on further enhancing our patient
outcomes and ensure that our quality and HCAHPS are on an upward trajectory.

Dr. Ray is a native Houstonian and father of two. He graduated from Duke University and then went
on to Medical School at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, and completed
a residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He earned an MBA from Rice
University, MPH from University of Texas Health Science Center Houston and is board certified by the
American Board of Internal Medicine. In his previous roles, Dr. Ray proved to be passionate about
patient outcomes and was instrumental in monitoring and implementing quality improvement
strategies, directing activities for clinical performance, innovation and partner retention.

We are excited about Dr. Ray’s “patient first” vision and look forward to his leadership as he steps
into his role at Kingwood and North Cypress.

NEW Vital Voices Onboarding & Exit Surveys

Starting October 1st, 2019

Starting October 1, 2019, HCA Houston Healthcare will start two new email surveys
to help us hear directly from our team members at two critical points in their
career journey with us:
New colleagues with HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress who reach the 45
and 100 day marks of employment with us will be asked to complete a short
survey from Glint, the vendor who administers the Vital Voices engagement
surveys, about their onboarding experience.
Similarly, colleagues who decide to leave will receive an exit survey to help us
enhance the employment experience for others going forward.
The process is somewhat similar to the regular Vital Voices surveys, and will require
no extra work for managers. Colleagues will receive an automated e-mail from
Glint, our Vital Voices vendor. The survey is designed for mobile devices and will
take less than 5 minutes. Comments are welcome on each question. Responses
are confidential and will only be reported to HR teams once enough responses
are collected to maintain anonymity; your manager won’t see your responses.
The new feedback options at the beginning and end of employment helps us
identify trends and create meaningful changes that can improve the overall
experience for patients and colleagues.

“In 2018, our mission to care for and
improve human life was amplified by
your support of one another through
the HCA Hope Fund. Because of your
generosity, the Hope Fund was able
to help 3,762 families last year and
more than 34,000 families since the
inception of the fund. Every day more
than a dozen members of our HCA
Healthcare family find themselves
needing help when faced with an
unexpected hardship. I am very proud
of our HCA Healthcare family and
how we care for one another through

QUALITY CORNER: BERT- Behavioral Emergency Response Team

In September we have been conducting our first ever drills for our BERT
team with plans to go live with Code BERT beginning in October.

A Code BERT will activate a team of 4 people to help de-escalate a
patient exhibiting behavioral concerns. The team participates in
specialized training called CPI/TIC.

Anyone can call 3333 to activate a Code BERT.

If a situation becomes violent or escalates outside of the control of the
BERT team, a Code Green should be called.

Code BERT can only be called for patients. A Code Green should still be
called if a situation involves a patient’s family members/visitors.

CPI/TIC training is conducted on campus now. See Healthstream to sign
up today.

NURSING CORNER

The Centrella bed now allows for continuous monitoring of patients' heart and respiratory rates over 100 times per 33
minute without ever touching the patient.
EarlySense® technology alerts clinicians to potential patient deterioration events much earlier than traditional
monitoring methods, enabling our teams to intervene and avoid "failure to rescue" scenarios more effectively.
Specific improved clinical outcomes demonstrated with this technology include

Reduction in mortality related to "code blue" events by 83 percent, and cardiac arrests by 86 percent.
Decreased length-of-stay was reduced by 9 percent, and ICU days by 45 percent.
Early detection of sepsis, a condition that, when not identified and treated rapidly, may be life-threatening.
