NURSING CORNER
Did you know that we just purchased 10 additional iPads to increase the QSE6840
use of our language line? Why is an interpreter important here at HCA
North Cypress?
A professional medical interpreter improves understanding and compliance at each step the patient takes through
their healthcare journey. Utilizing the language line assists in reducing the risk of misunderstandings and misdiagnoses,
which could result in repeat visits, longer hospital stays, increased expenses, and poor outcomes.
We do not want to rely on the patient’s family or friends to take on the task of interpreting for us. That individual is not
certified in medical interpretation and therefore, it is impossible for us to know that what we are explaining is indeed
translating the exact way that it is intended. The language line checks the box to ensure medical procedures and
concerns are addressed precisely and professionally. Remember, just because an individual is bilingual, does not make
him/her an interpreter, especially in a healthcare environment.
ANYONE interacting with a patient whose primary language is not English, should be checking out an iPad and utilizing
the language line. The majority of the iPads are housed in the AD’s Office on the first floor. They are fully charged and
must be signed out and then back in at the conclusion of each use.
The process of using the language line is very simple, however, if you need assistance, please reach out to Karen Bard,
Patient Advocate Manager, by calling x3842. She is happy to help.
Remember, “CareLikeFamily” begins with doing the right thing, every time, with every patient!

STELLAR SHOUT-OUTS TO THESE EMPLOYEES!
Adreanna, ICU: “I want to commend Nurse Adreanna and nominate her for nurse of the century. She is an amazing, energetic, compassionate
nurse in the ICU. Twice now, we have had the privilege of her attending to us.
Most of your staff from food service to the doctors are incredible, which is why it is so meaningful that Nurse Adreanna stands out. To that point, when
she came on shift during our most recent visit (Nov 16 – Nov 21), I immediately recalled her from almost a year ago when my mother was last in the ICU.
As much as I appreciate all of the countless people that have tended to my mother over the years, I could not recall any of them. That is the kind of
positive impression Nurse Adreanna has. Her number one quality is she is an advocate for her patient. It is quite a comfort, knowing Nurse Adreanna is
there, because I don’t have to worry.
She is also a consummate professional. At this point in my life, I have a pretty good sense of whether a person knows what they are doing or not, even
if I have no knowledge of their profession. Nurse Adreanna exudes confidence. She pays attention to the details, no matter how slight. She checks in
on a consistent basis. And you can always find her when you need her. The doctor will tell me the orders he/she is going to leave. And before I can
check with Nurse Adreanna to make sure she saw them, she’s already executing them. She also knows how to talk to her patients. She knows how to
nudge an obstinate eighty year old woman into compliance. And not only does she ask my mother if she needs anything, but she asks me as well.
And as important as those first two traits are, they are only amplified by her extraordinary personality. She is fun and engaging. She can make you
forget that you are sitting in the hospital. And even when she is busy, she will take a moment to chat with my mom. It is an engagement that very
subtly makes my mother think and exercise her brain. That kind of interaction goes a long way to helping with recovery. Nurse Adreanna does not just
treat you like a person; she treated us like family.
These qualities while in and of themselves are worthy of accolade, it is the fact that she does all of these things effortlessly that truly deserves credit. It
just seems to be who she is naturally. Obviously, I never wish to be in the ICU again, but if we have to, I would ask for her. You have an incredible nurse
in Nurse Adreanna and she deserves recognition.”
