CyPress Newsletter March 2021

The North Cy-Press

A Monthly Employee Newsletter
March 2021

Letter from Jim Brown, CEO

I am so proud of our team for the way that we came together during the recent winter storm. I greatly appreciate those
members of our team who worked under lock-down conditions from Sunday evening to Tuesday morning. I am thankful for
the commitment of our relief team that in many cases left homes without power or water or with damage, had to leave
children with loved ones because of school and daycare closures, and had to navigate icy roads to relieve their
peers. During this event, we stepped up to meet the needs of our community.

The demands placed upon our team were intense. We operated at 115% of capacity. At one point in time, we had 71
active patients in our ED that typically serves about that many patients in a day. The number of admitted patients holding
in the ED awaiting beds peaked at 31. We operationalized hallway beds on each of our tower nursing units. Many of our
team members worked in alternate areas such as resource nurses in ICU and ED and as patient safety sitters.

We were all stretched, but some areas stepped up in ways we’ve typically not experienced. Because of longstanding power
and water outages, both our inpatient and outpatient dialysis units operated almost around the clock. With peer hospitals
unable to sterilize their surgical instrumentation because of water use restrictions, Central Sterile Processing also worked
almost 24 hours a day to service our needs and those of our sister hospitals.

With this event occurring amidst COVID with social distancing guidelines, we had to improvise in providing staff
accommodations. We were able to secure more than 500 nights hoteling for approximately 225 of our team members. I
appreciate Jackie Ortega and Vicky Kahl championing this effort. Also, I am grateful to Marcus and the Premier team for
continuing to provide screeners and for running our shuttle between the hospital and seven different hotels.

While hopefully we don’t experience another winter storm like this for many years to come, this event showed us how
good we are and how well we can work together. I am proud to be a part of HCA North Cypress and hope that you are as
well.

Wondering when I can go back to work. Probably not until

Joanna McDaniel, MRI Tech – Imaging Services

“I wanted to let you know that I have had several MRI’s of my
brain due to a meningioma found seven years ago. I am
claustrophobic and have been put under as well as had MRIs
done in places that offered for larger people. My experiences
have pretty much been horrible. Joanna McDaniel was the
nicest and most compassionate tech I have EVER come
across. She was definitely a God send to me as she talked me
through it and was patient with me the whole time. I was
very emotional when I left as I have never had that best of
care for a MRI scan before. She is a very valuable asset to
your team and I’m sure in the future I will need another
follow up and intend to have her as my tech. Please take good
care of her as she is the BEST!!!” –Dr. Toung Patient Testimony

Jaime Lige, Retail Pharmacy

Did you know that a perk to working at HCA N. Cypress is the convenience of
having your prescriptions filled by our very own Pharmacy? You will
experience super friendly service, including that offered by Jaime Lige. She
has worked at N. Cypress/HCA for 11 years and what keeps her going are her
co-workers, “they are simply the best!” Jaime does an exceptional job within
the Pharmacy and takes her service excellence a step further by providing
friendly reminders to staff and she will even deliver your prescriptions
straight to you/your department. What could be better than a friendly face,
an efficient process, and delivery…well, you may even find chocolates in your
bag from time to time. When Jaime isn’t at work filling prescriptions and
educating the consumer, she spends time with her husband of 13 years and
their 4 beautiful children. Thank you, Jaime, for treating your HCA Family like
your own! You, and the entire Retail Pharmacy Team, do an amazing job! We
are excited that Jaime’s daughter has followed in her footsteps and has taken
a role as a StarRN at HCA Clearlake! We are looking forward to having her
officially join the HCA family!

STELLAR SHOUT-OUTS TO THESE EMPLOYEES!

Chelsea Diedrich, BSN, RN, Med. Surg. 4

Sometimes you stop to watch and listen and it just warms your heart and makes you grin
from ear to ear. This is precisely what happened as I did my patient rounding on MS4 on the
morning of Feb. 9th. Chelsea Diedrich has been an employee at HCA N. Cypress for 6
years. She spent her first 4 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and has proudly
been an RN for the last 2 years. She didn’t see me on the floor as I watched and listened
from the hallway. She had entered a patient’s room down the 100 hall and with each word,
she anticipated a need before he could ask. She extended his bed as she noticed he was tall
and looked a bit cramped. She explained about transport coming shortly to take him down
for his scheduled procedure. She explained what to expect, got him prepped and ready for
the team member’s arrival, and made sure to ask him if he had any additional needs or
requests before she exited. Chelsea still could not see me as she thanked him upon her
departure and sanitized her hands. That is precisely when I approached her. I couldn’t help
but praise her for the stellar job she was doing. She was humbled and replied, “I’m trying”
to which I replied, “and succeeding!” When asked what she likes most about her job, she
replied, “Being able to connect with each of my patients personally and helping them reach
their goals, even the small ones.” When Chelsea isn’t sharing her talents at the hospital, she
enjoys running and cycling. Ironically enough, her favorite quote is “there’s always a reason
to smile, you just have to find it” and Chelsea was my reason for SMILING today! Thank you
for Raising the Bar and for Caring Like Family! – Story by Karen Bard

HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress Team

Good evening! I just wanted to commend you for your staff in the
hospital. I was greeted at the front door for screening by a very
pleasant young lady. She was extremely helpful and very welcoming.
Set the tone for my visit. The reason for my visit was an evaluation of
a potential move into my assisted living community. The staff on the
4th floor was beyond helpful and welcoming as well. The social
worker was very prompt in getting all paperwork needed. I know
that usually everyone is emailing or calling and complaining about
what a horrible job we are doing but this one is to say job well
done!! I appreciate very much how I was treated in your hospital. I
reported back to my administrator and she was saying that she
wished that the hospital was closer to our community so that we
could route all of our residents there. Thank you again! Have a great
night.

Thank YOU ALL for #raisingthebar and #caringlikefamily

A “Great Catch” is an event or circumstance that has the
potential to cause harm to a patient but never reaches the
patient due to the actions of a staff member. These type
of events are encouraged to be reported by placing an

one is chosen to receive the “Great Catch Award”. All staff

HUMAN RESOURCES

Employee Benefits

In 2020, #34 families at HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress have received assistance when an
urgent crisis or unexpected hardship threatened to upend their lives. These are colleagues you
work beside every day who were struggling due to an event they could not control and thanks to
the donations of colleagues all across HCA Healthcare, they received the help they needed.

As we all continue to meet the challenges of this unprecedented year, knowing the Hope Fund is
here for our colleagues gives me great comfort. If you or someone you know is struggling, I
encourage you to learn more about applying for assistance. If you are able and would like to join
with those who donate to support our HCA Healthcare family, you can do so by visiting the giving
site. 100% of colleague donations go straight back out to a colleague in crisis.

Short-Term Housing Assistance in Major Disasters

Employee requests for housing assistance related to disaster needs should be directed to the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund
by completing an application at www.hcahopefund.com or calling 877-857-4673 during regular business hours.
The Hope Fund can provide financial assistance for short-term housing, such as a hotel room, the employee has located and
is immediately available. If the employee cannot locate housing, BCD travel may assist by calling 800-892-4188 to discuss
options, which are often very limited near the disaster area.
Typical scenarios for employees needing short-term housing assistance. Most employees stay with family or friends or
book themselves into a hotel with their personal credit/debit card holding the reservation. It they need help with this
expense, they should complete a Hope Fund application. Financial assistance for an initial 5-10 day period, can be provided
to an employee who has completed an application. These funds are delivered through a direct deposit into the employee’s
bank account in as soon as 24-48 hours after completing an application.
Short term hotel housing supply is often very limited in major disasters. The opportunities for hotel rooms increase the
further the employee is willing to go from the disaster area. When this is not acceptable to the employee, they are typically
left with family and friend options or to go to a Red Cross/community shelter.

More Flexibility for Flexible Spending Account Participants

In accordance with the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2020, HCA Healthcare has adopted the following voluntary changes to provide more
flexibility to Health Care FSA and Day Care FSA participants.

Making Changes During the Year
You may change your 2021 FSA elections by calling BConnected on or before Oct. 31, 2021 to: Start, increase, decrease or stop your Health Care FSA
contributions. However, you may not reduce your benefit elections below the amount already reimbursed to you before you request the change.
Start, increase, decrease or stop your Day Care FSA contributions. If you elect to stop your contributions, the plan will turn off your contributions going forward.
However, the plan is not able to refund contributions you made prior to your election change. Such amounts will remain available for reimbursement of eligible
Day Care FSA expenses.

All election changes will be effective the date the election change request is made.

Unused 2020 Health Care FSA Amounts: All unused amounts (including amounts above $550) remaining in your Health Care FSA as of Dec. 31, 2020, may be
carried over and used for reimbursement of eligible expenses incurred during the 2021 plan year. You may access up to $550 in carryover funds to pay for eligible
expenses from January 1 to April 15, 2021 period. Effective beginning April 16, you may also access carryover 2020 funds in excess of $550.

Unused 2020 Day Care FSA Amounts: Unused amounts remaining in your Day Care FSA as of Dec. 31, 2020, may be used to reimburse eligible Day Care FSA
expenses you incur from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021. These amounts may be used to reimburse eligible expenses incurred during the 2021 plan year for the care of a
dependent under the age of 14.
