What’s Happening at Coal Creek Coffee

T H A N K Y O U to everyone who has made an effort to stop in and help us keep the doors open. We’re hanging on,
but barely, so keep it up!

We will be closed on Saturday, July 3rd, so you can attend the festivities at the CCCIA and support your local businesses.  Be sure to
grab breakfast and lunch while you are there!

Who’s excited to run in and out without having to wait?! Who is *always* running just a couple minutes late, and loves stopping for
coffee without a line?! We heard you, and have gone back to Self-Serve for our drip coffee!
We are now making our own coffee and latte syrups, so stop in and give them a try.

Thanks again for supporting your local coffee shop.  See you in the morning ~~ we’ll have the coffee ready for you.

4 It Takes a
Canyon!

▪ By Linda Mar tin and Dave Pence

This month we are talking with Jody
Dickson, one of the founding members of
Saws & Slaws, a 501(c)3 non profit organization
committed to “a stronger community through a
healthier forest”. Celebrating their 10th season
this year, Saws & Slaws does volunteer fire
mitigation in the Coal Creek Canyon area.
They have removed a lot of combustible
material from our forest over the past decade
in their ongoing efforts to make neighborhoods
safer. Jody gives us some insight as to why she
is so dedicated to the effort:

ITAC: Why and how did you get involved
with Saws & Slaws?

JD: As a property owner up here, I had
been doing research on what I could be doing
to reduce wildfire risk and support a healthy
forest. I am both sensitive around fire due to
a traumatic childhood event as well as I’m
deeply driven to be a good steward of the earth.
As part of my research, I remember speaking to
Allen Owen out of the Boulder Colorado State
Forest Service office and asking how much
impact I could have with just one acre. He
told me that on one acre that I really couldn’t
make much of a difference but on three we
could. My brain immediately went to “Oh,
well then, I just need to engage my neighbors
in a shared effort!”

Meanwhile, I was (and am) part of TEG
and was noticing that we, CCCIA, and the
Fire Department would plan wildfire and forest
health education events without knowing that
the other organizations were doing the same. In
2011, we organized a small group to consolidate
that effort and collaboratively planned a whole
forest health and wildfire education series. In
one of those planning meetings, Cesar Gellido
brought up the idea of doing an Amish barn-
raising style mitigation event where we’d do

EARTHWATCH ▪ By Jody Dickson

Green Grass Blues

Igrew up in the Midwest, so sinking my bare
feet into green grass is a true pleasure for
me. The scene of a manicured lawn and the
sound of regular lawn mowing is soul-warming
familiar. I love the month or so every year that
Colorado is a little more green than usual. Yet
I know the environmental costs of those green
lawns. Comparatively we have a tiny amount
of manicured lawn up in Coal Creek Canyon,
but I struggle with the knowledge that most
of us don’t have the water rights necessary to
grow food up here while SO MUCH water is
being used to sustain swaths of green grass at
properties in town.

Modern day lawns have been developing
as a standard for centuries. Some of the earliest
known turfs were for games like cricket, tennis
and golf. Meanwhile in the 16th century, formal
gardens became a sign of wealth, especially
since they had to be maintained by a lot of
people and sometimes livestock. Plus, it was
a luxury to be able to use land for something
other than growing food. The first mechanical
lawn mower was invited in 1830 which made
possible for the creation of large parks (e.g.
Central Park in New York) and less affluent
people to enjoy mowed lawns. People loved
the look a green lawn could give their homes,
and maintenance became easier with advanced
equipment, effective pesticides and fertilizers,
and irrigation.

Today, it is estimated that residential lawns
make up 2% of all land in the US, but it requires
more irrigation than any other agricultural
crop grown in the country. (Not to mention the
fact that almost all of the water used is treated
drinking water.) Most of the grasses commonly
grown in lawns in the US are not native to our
ecosystems, so while they do grow they will
not thrive without attention. The fertilizers and
pesticides that are used run off and get into
ground water. Energy is used and polluting
emissions come from powered mowers. Lawn
maintenance creates more carbon emissions
than the lawns themselves can capture. Grass
