a spiral arm arching from the center of the galaxy in the south
through the constellation Lyra and trailing off in the constellations
of Andromeda and Cassiopeia in the north. The Milky Way is our
home galaxy with starry arms spiraling away from the center. Our
solar system sits about one-third of the way from the bright center

spiral arm called the Orion-Cygnus Arm. It’s the innermost arm,
called the Sagittarius Arm that dominates our summer sky.

It’s hard from our vantage point within the galaxy to know what
it truly looks like. Galaxies come in all shapes and sizes from
elliptical galaxies that look like egg-shaped gathering of stars,
irregular galaxies that seem to have no structure to giant spiral
galaxies like the Andromeda Galaxy. And our idea of the galaxy
has evolved. Scientists believe the Milky Way is a barred-spiral
galaxy, meaning it has a central bar of stars instead of a circular
core. The Milky Way may be 200,000 light-years across and about
