The Conductor’s Dispatch
The Christmas Zephyr ▪ By Brad Swar t zwelter

It was December 24th, 1982. The Rio Grande Zephyr was
plying its way back to Denver from Salt Lake City. Snow
was falling fast and furious. On board were several dozen

passengers, two engineers, three conductors, and the dining

car crew. The rail was getting buried under a new blanket of

“white gold,” as the skiers in Winter Park called it.

The going didn’t get rough until the train made it to the east

portal of Moffat Tunnel. There the plow of the locomotives

plowed into drifts with freezing violence. The train sent billows

of white powder 20 feet into the air at 30 mph. Instead of the

usual sound of whining dynamic brakes, the hearty people

living year round in Tolland heard the growling of the diesel

engines adding power to the drive wheels in notch 3. The

snow was reluctant to make way for the locomotives without

a fight.

At Rollinsville, festive lights wrapped around the tavern

looked warm and inviting. To the people in the tavern, the sight

of passengers finishing Christmas dinner in the Silver Banquet

dining car must have looked heavenly. The train thundered on

into the dark, snowy night.

A group of carolers were serenading a couple in their

cabin at Pinecliffe. The train crew was tempted to stop for a

bit of Christmas cheer, but the train schedule would not wait.

Children on the train pressed their noses against the glass to get

a good look at the bundled up singers waving to the train.

Along the steep cliffs of South Boulder Creek, the train

triggered one micro avalanche after another. Several slides

of snow had inundated the tracks from above. Slide fence

detectors had signaled the crew to proceed at a speed

that would allow them to stop before hitting any serious

obstruction. The powerful train pushed the icy debris to the

side without much trouble.

Tunnel after tunnel provided a respite for the plow on the

nose of the D&RGW 5771. The train’s conductor wondered if he

should just stop inside the length of tunnel 22 and “garage” the

whole thing until maintenance workers could clear the tracks,
