Importance of
Donating Blood
• Donating blood is one of the most common ways people
choose to give back to their communities, and the
demand for blood in hospitals is always high. Despite
the high demand and the general recognition of its
importance, only about a fourth of the people who are
able to donate blood do.
• Many people are not aware of just how important blood
donations can be. Approximately one of every seven
people admitted to the hospital need blood. Many
different people experiencing a large range of conditions
require blood provided through donation. Some
examples of patients who may need blood are
• Cancer patients
• Patients with anemia
• mothers experiencing labor complications
• people involved in an accident
• There are several blood types, and the rarer ones are
always in higher demand. One of the rarest types of
blood, O negative, can be given to patients of any blood
type, so donations of O negative blood are especially
needed.
• If you do not know what blood type you are, it may be
helpful to find out. If your blood type is rare, your blood
donation would be especially appreciated. However, all
donations (no matter the type) are always needed and
valued.

Donating Blood
Lacks of Interest in Donating Blood
Most of the people does not know the
advantages of donating blood
Most of the people refuse to donate
blood because they were scared to the
needle
This can be overcome with exposing
people to the importance of donating
blood .
Methods of blood
management
donated in terms of
storage
• The donated blood is about 400 cm3. Blood is
taken through the veins on the arm. The blood is
then stored in a blood bag containing sodium
citrate. The purpose is to prevent blood clots.
The time taken for a blood bag is about 5-10
minutes.
• Blood donated will then be tested to determine
the blood group. This is an important step in
ensuring the suitability of donor blood with the
blood of the patient who will receive the blood.
If not sure the correct group, the blood
transfusion process will be more difficult.
• Blood test are performed for any signs of illness
such as Hepatitis B and C, AIDS and other blood
transfusion. The presence of viruses such as
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and
unwanted substances will also be identified. The
contaminated blood bags will be removed
• Once blood is completely clean and healthy, the
blood will be stored in the refrigerator at 4 °C for
5 to 10 days or longer after being added with
glucose. Specifically, blood components can be
stored as follows:
• Red blood cells - in the refrigerator for 42 days
• Platlet - at room temperature for 5 days
• Plasma - frozen for 1 year.
