The Queen Who Wished for Gold

LAFS.2.RL.1.2 Recount stories, including fables and folktakes from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

The Queen Who Wished for Gold

Long ago, a silly queen made a wish. “I wish for gold at my
fingertips!” she exclaimed.
The queen reached for an apple to eat. The fruit turned into
gold!
Next, the queen reached for a glass of warm milk, but the milk
became gold too. “I cannot eat and drink gold food,” the queen
cried, “but it will make me rich!”
She raced through the castle. She touched everything in sight.
Then she touched the people. She even touched her dog! Soon
the queen was alone. Her gold dog stared at her.
In the garden, she picked a gold flower. “I cannot sniff a gold
flower,” the queen said. She dropped it to the ground.
That night the castle was quiet. The queen slept on a hard gold
bed. She cried gold tears. “I do not want any more gold,” she
said. “I wish it would go away.”
In the morning, everything had changed back! The queen was
so happy. She would never wish for gold again!
