For example by 2050, it is projected that 85 percent of cars
in the USA will be eliminated. That is a huge reduction in the
number of cars, the parking spots they require, the garages in
homes no longer needed, and the list goes on. The impact on
jobs, and every aspect of life, will be immense; and much of it
is quite positive. But that is a lot of job changes for millions of
people, or career options completely evaporating.

Never in my lifetime has so much news been devoted to the
coming technological changes to our everyday lives. This news
is driven in part by the certainty that the changes will actually
transpire. Driverless cars and trucks — ask most anyone
and they know they are coming. Flying cars — we have been
hearing about those for 50 years but driverless cars, in-home
robots, fast-food workers replaced with machines, check-out
free grocery stores — all these seem to be seen as certain to
become part of our lives.

I was fearful for a time about how our country and the
world would adapt to these massive changes in employment.
I have since come to learn that economies have an amazing
way of adjusting, and we are fortunate to be alive during
a time of great opportunity. Now — actions at the local,
national and international levels will be required to minimize
troublesome, sudden shifts in employment patterns.

The world improved greatly after the industrial revolution
of the late-1800s. But yes, jobs like blacksmiths and street lamp
lighters were eliminated en mass. The new technologies of the
era vastly increased the need for workers in other areas. The
future will likely see the same pattern.
