A Letter From the President Board of Directors

By Lee Patterson 2018/2019

The ‘season’ is coming to a close and summer is Lee Patterson
upon us. President
Our seasonal members are heading north and summer
members are coming on board. I really enjoyed meeting [email protected]
a number of the Canadian members this season. The
American/Canadian tournament was a huge success. In Derek Holding

We are currently running our second First Tee session, this time supporting

General Manager’s Report

By Michael O’Brien

Mark VanDyck With half of the fiscal year now complete at the club, the
direction and financial performance continues to remain
Director of Golf strong. Revenues are exceeding budgets, continuing
the trend of strong financial performance.
New committees have been formed and a fresh
perspective is being introduced across the board to all
committees. Although it remains the Chairperson’s decision, if you do have
an interest in serving, please contact the appropriate chair.

Todd Ingram The North Course Steering Committee has been selected. I can say that it is
a rather large committee now, and a decision to hold the number of
Golf Course Superintendent members at its current level has been made. Along those lines, and as I
stated in an earlier monthly letter, it is the responsibility of the management
of the club to make all members aware of the planning and progress of this
large capital investment. Although you may not be directly on the committee,
your input during focus groups will not only be welcome, but also
encouraged. The Steering Committee has held two meetings to date and
those have been planning meetings for the committee. I would expect focus
group meetings to begin during the month of May.

Valerie Roca Summer Membership sales are progressing very well. We currently have
over 50 members who are joining for the summer and anticipate another 25
Director of Membership before the end of May. If you have a friend or associate you believe would
be a good member prospect, I encourage you to introduce them to the club
this summer and allow them to enjoy the club for the next six months.
Without knowing the schedule and membership offering next year, it is very
possible that summer membership in 2019 may be predicated on this
summer’s participation.

Eduardo Alvarez Last month the club hosted its first-ever Media Day. The Sun-Sentinel,
Miami Herald, The Golf and Travel Show and Tee Times News were all on
Chief Financial Officer the property for a day of golf and a discussion of the golf industry in South
Florida. Amy Krigsman, our Sales & Marketing Coordinator, organized the
entire day. It was a great opportunity to reestablish the club relationship with
the outside media and also help explain what we believe is Fort Lauderdale
Country Club’s place in the market. It was a good day that already
culminated with an opportunity to speak on The Golf and Travel Show.
Men’s Summer League, a very successful program, is just around the
corner. I highly recommend you speak with one of the Golf Professionals
about the program so you don’t miss this very special opportunity.

Joe Gamlin Also nearing is the Annual Fort Lauderdale Country Club Scholarship
Fundraiser. Flyers around the club and in the Pro Shop explaining the day’s
Director of Food & Beverage event, what the proceeds go for, and how you can participate may be picked
up in either of these locations. The Golf Tournament is Saturday afternoon
May 12th. More information on the tournament is also available on page 19
of the newsletter.

Women’s Golf

WGA News by Sandi Hubiak

The Melanie Finley Ovarian Cancer Guest Tournament was held on March
27th. We had a total of 82 women play. The golf course was a sea of teal.
Thanks to Marylou Sparks for organizing this event. Over $5,000 was
collected for women fighting this devastating disease. The Finley family
(Jerry, Sandy and Melanie) were in attendance.
Our last Interclub of the season was held at LaGorce Country Club in Miami
Beach. Ten lucky women had the opportunity to play this wonderful course.
We especially enjoyed having a forecaddie to help us with out putting.
A great win for Team FLCC in the Broward Summer League. We beat our rivals, Jacaranda, 40-32.
Sara Jane Rose and Kelly Perroni were our first place team, scoring 12 ½ points. We also looked
fabulous in our new team shirts. Sign up for the May and June Broward Summer League events on
the Locker Room bulletin board.
WGA Summer Guest Day is July 17th.
Plan ahead and invite your guests to play
the best course in South Florida. The de-
tails are on the bulletin board in the Locker
Room.
Finally, please welcome new member
Donna Keagy to our group.
Stay out of the “Sand” trap,
Sandi

The Birdie Corner
Good news, ladies! The Birdie Challenge is alive and well for the 2018-19 year!
Our anonymous benefactor will donate $10 per birdie to the FLCC Scholarship Fund for the first 150
birdies.
As of April 17, 2018, there have been 40 birdies! If you wish to “up the ante,” please contact the
editor of this section at [email protected].

On Tuesdays, WGA members can enter the Birdie Pool for $2.00. The pot is split between those who
have Birdies during their round.

Women’s Golf Trivia

1. What women’s golf legend is second
all-time in both LPGA Tour wins and
Major titles?

2. According to Golf Digest, the odds of
doing this in a single round of golf
are 67 MILLION to ONE.

Answers are on the bulletin board in the
Ladies’ Locker Room.

Rule of the Month
by Nancy Myers

We all know that when you hit a ball out
of bounds, you replay the ball from
where it was hit and take a one stroke
penalty.
How many shots would you be
penalized if you hit a ball that came to
rest out of bounds and, not realizing it
was out of bounds, played the ball?
You will be penalized three (3) strokes.
You incur a two-shot penalty for playing
the wrong ball. You are assessed a
stroke and distance penalty for the
previous shot that went out of bounds.
You go back to the spot where you hit
the ball out of bounds and play on.
Ouch!

Women’s Golf

Thankful Mulligan

The WGA and the 9 Holers will once again join forces on May 31st for the Thankful Mulligan
tournament to have fun, play golf, and help LifeNet4Families.
LifeNet4Families is in need of food, toiletries, diapers and baby wipes. Every five (5) items you bring
earns you a mulligan in the day’s tournament. Look for a list of specific items that are in high
demand before every tournament on the board in the Ladies’ Locker Room.
LifeNet4Families’ mission is to be a seamless system of care for those in need in Broward County by
providing necessary food, ancillary services and referrals. They have been involved for over 30 years
providing service to the hungry and homeless of Broward County. From the humble beginnings of
distributing a few peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the homeless, to today’s provision of 84,283
hot meals a year, their development has reflected both the growing numbers and the growing needs
of the poor in our community.
FLCC is proud to have been part of this help for several years through Diana Roby’s efforts and the 9
Hole Ladies’ Thankful Mulligan Tournaments. Debbie Baldwin started these tournaments to help
provide items to this wonderful organization.
The tournaments are held whenever there is a 5th Thursday in a month (with a few exceptions). We
want to pair up 9-Hole Ladies and 18-Hole Ladies to have fun, play golf and serve the community at
the same time. For every five (5) items that are brought in, a Mulligan is awarded to us to use during
that tournament.

Food Drive

Please continue your weekly contributions to our food bank collections, which can
be given to Peggy in the Ladies’ Locker Room.
We accept non-perishable items, paper products, canned goods, small toiletries,
baby needs, plastic utensils and clothing. Please remember that many of their
clients are homeless, so cans with pull off lids, small portion cereals, etc. are good.
Thank you so very much for your help.

9 Holer News by Janet Bloomfield

Thankful Mulligan was once again a huge success. We had about 28 participants
from WGA and 9 Holers. The donated items go to LifeNet4Families and our
contribution plays a small part in helping these families. Debbi Baldwin, who started
Thankful Mulligan, explained about the charity, which is a shelter for local homeless
families. Ours is the only golf tournament that helps this shelter. To extend our
support further, we are now going to ask for an optional $10 fee to play in the
tournament as well as the goods. Our next Thankful Mulligan is Thursday, May 31st.
Let’s make this Thankful Mulligan even better than the last!
Our table decorations were once again the inspiration of Vickie McDonald, with lots of yellow flowers and
greenery. Diane Angella helped her put it all together.
The first place winners were Sher, Donna, Leslie and Beth. The second place winners were Judy, Cynthia
and Susan. PLUS Vicki outdid herself by making the first place prizes of Golf Cart Reversible seat covers!
The ladies loved them! What a gift. As Donna said, we thought she was just a pretty face with decorating
skills.
We’re moving to our summer schedule. Please note that as of June 1st, our tee time will be 9:30am with no
clinic.
And as many know, I had a Hole-in-One on #12 South. I know, amazing. This is a high handicapper who
made a Hole-in-One. Really!?! The message is that anyone can do it! Keep at it, take lessons from our
very talented pros and, most of all, have fun playing with such fabulous ladies!
Some of our Members have already left for the summer and others will follow shortly (I leave towards the
end of May). We look forward to your return.
Have a safe, happy and wonderful summer,
Janet

Basic Guidelines to Faster Play

A round of golf at the club should take approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes.
1. Be ready when it is your turn

· Be ready to hit while your playing partner is hitting
· Take more than one club if you are uncertain what to use
· Take a scoop of sand with you when going to hit a shot
2. Park your carts off to the side of the green-completely on the cart path (this will
allow the group behind to hit a bit sooner)
3. Save time on the greens (this is where most time is wasted)
· First, fix your ball mark promptly!
· Line up your putt while others are putting (again, be ready to play)
· Fix other ball marks while others are putting
· Immediately move quickly when the last player holes out
· Get your cart moving to the next tee before recording scores
4. Allow other to play through when:
· Your group is playing slower than the standard pace (which is three hours and 45

minutes), and/or the group behind you is waiting on every shot
· The group is an entire hole behind the group in front of you
· When the group stops at the halfway house and stays there long
· Enough for the following group to leave the previous green
Don’t forget about course etiquette. Proper course etiquette speeds up play for everyone.

Thorguard Lightning Detection Protects Members and Guests

You can’t put a price on safety or peace of mind. The sensors on the roof of the Pro Shop can
detect a threat of lightning in a timely manner to allow members and guests to evacuate the
courses safely. When lightning is near, the Thorguard’s four horns will simultaneously blast
throughout both courses continuously for 15 seconds. When this happens, the golf courses are
automatically closed. All members and their guests must then seek shelter. Below is a list of do’s
and don’ts when lightning is in the area:

DO DON’T

Go to halfway house Continue playing golf
Go to clubhouse Park carts under trees or open shelters
Seek low areas Drive carts near fences or anything metal

The golf courses will remain closed until the system sounds an “all clear” to go back out. The “all
clear” will be three five second blasts from the horns. Please note that if the golf courses take
heavy rains, they will remain closed even after the all clear sounds. The Golf Professional
Staff will inform members and guests when the courses are open again. Additionally, the
sirens will continuously flash to let golfers know that the courses are still closed. There is also red
light in the Plantation Room and Men’s Grille that lets you know if the course is open or not.
Member safety is a top priority.

Upcoming Outside Events and Course Closures
