We are looking forward to Father’s Day, which will be one of
our first actual events at the Club since the whole pandemic
began. Hope you will join us on Sunday June 21 for some live
music, BBQ favorites and good times with your LHPYC Family.
See details on page 8.
We have also planned the Drive-In Movie night for Friday June
26th. Finally. So many people have been looking forward to
that. Sandlot is the movie. See details on special events page.

Unfortunately, the Tri LHPYC Triathlon, scheduled for May 30,
had to be postponed. We are looking into possible dates to
reschedule, but it is challenging with all the traveling and cruise
trips, as well as planned vacations. Also, Phase 1 only allows
gatherings of 10 people, so we have to figure out the logistics.
Jeremy is working on it and as soon as we pinpoint a date, we
will communicate it to you and encourage your participation.
Stay fit, stay healthy. This is the best way to fight this virus.

Hopefully, you have been staying up to date and connected
with our LHPYC social media. We had a contest for our
furloughed staff members to enter by creating a video of them at
home. Gina, our Special Events Director, blew away the
competition (as usual) with her creativity and sense of humor.
No surprise there. Congrats to Gina and thanks to all for having
fun and submitting their entries.

Thank you all so much for your support for the staff and club
through the shutdown. Also, thank you all for your support at
Tuesday June 2nd Zoom Zoning Board meeting. Your
participation, persistence and enthusiasm for your club is what
is getting us what we need to rebuild. This vote opens the doors
to start the many other votes and meetings needed to get final
site plan approval. Three years of work has led to this moment.
It is now time to start keeping the pressure on our city to push
this voting process along quickly and without controversy. The
last 6 months of negotiations has been extremely intense and
there is no need for anymore. Let us get started NOW! I am also
excited to share with you the updated renderings of YOUR new
Club on the following pages. Enjoy!

CORNER

Heading into June we are all practicing a new standard in how we go about living a normal life. We are all
dealing with safe distancing outside the club but have to remember that the rules inside the club apply more
than ever. We want to service all but only in the safest way possible.

We want the club to be the ultimate safe destination. As always, our core staff adheres to proper sanitation
policies, washing hands, sanitizing work areas, changing gloves, wearing masks and maintaining social
distancing.

We are all in this together so let’s make it work.

Our themed menus continue to be a success. I have had some requests to repeat some of the more popular
dishes from past weeks. We will put some ideas together and see what it looks like. It looks like this
promotion will be around for some time.

I want to thank everyone that has come to the club to enjoy the great view and have some fantastic food. I
have noticed we can still have fun, socialize and eat great food in this new way of life just by following the
simple guidelines.

See you at the club.

HONOR FLIGHT SOUTH FLORIDA PARADES FOR VETERANS:

Since we can't Fly, let's PARADE (socially-distanced, of course)!
The postponement of our Spring 2020 DC flying season could not keep Honor Flight South Florida
from finding ways to touch and celebrate our beloved Veterans! We pulled together an impromptu
car parade to deliver supplies and some needed joy to local veterans in Plantation, and then again in
Tamarac.
HFSF had the privilege of recognizing 12 WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans (plus their
veteran friends and neighbors) in our local community by organizing a few patriotic drive-by parades.
Along the way we celebrated the 95th birthday of WWII vet and loyal HFSF volunteer Harvey
Mittleman, and the big 100 for another HFSF veteran alum, Arthur Schorr. What a blast we had!
Thank you to the local Police Departments, Fire Departments, and government officials for always
being so willing to work with us and lead the way! As always, Mission BBQ stepped up to donate
their big loud truck and delicious BBQ dinners for all the Veterans and first responders.
Where to next? Cooper City, Boca Raton, and LIGHTHOUSE POINT & POMPANO!
Keep an eye on our social media as we announce the date, the details, and how to participate for the
LHP parade at the end of June!

HOSPITAL / SHELTER / MEDICAL CENTER FOOD DELIVERIES:

In April and May LHPYC had the privilege of being able to prepare and deliver meals
to the Covenant House of Florida, Broward Children’s Center, and Broward Health
North Hospital.
*If you would like to fund a meal delivery, our club is happy to organize and deliver
more meals to any local hospital, medical center, or shelter of your choosing. We can
do something nice for roughly $7 per lunch or $10 per dinner. We will do this at cost.
No profits will be made on these efforts.

LETTERS TO VETERANS

A simple card, note, or drawing from you or your children can be exactly what a quarantined elderly Veteran needs
to brighten their day. Make it a “homeschool” project for your kids to show their love and respect to our Nations
Heroes!
Mailings can be sent to Honor Flight South Florida who will distribute them to our long list of WWII, Korea, &

As businesses are adjusting to opening under the “new normal” circumstances, I know we all look forward to seeing friends and
getting back to a more social existence. I know that fishing has continued to be a great outlet for many of our members. And to help

has also been great with the opening of grouper season there are endless options for our anglers.

WINDWORD PASSAGE

Making a Hasty Escape

One of the most labor-intensive and difficult tasks an early sailor
could perform was raising the anchor. I never really appreciated
the backbreaking work required until a several years ago when
the anchor windlass broke while chartering a 45-foot boat in the
Caribbean. We were anchored in 35 feet of water with 100 feet of
chain and a 40-pound anchor. I foolishly volunteered to
manually retrieve the gear. After that experience, I better
appreciated the hardship endured by crewmen on large sailing
vessels during the Age of Sail.

Centuries ago, sailors didn’t have the benefit of
machine-powered windlasses to ease this laborious and
time-consuming job. That is why, when an anchored vessel
observed a hostile ship approach, it would sometimes cut or
untie the anchor “cable” (the term for a thick rope) in order to
make a speedy escape. When a ship intentionally loosed the
anchor and sailed away it was said to “slip the cable.” That term
was imaginatively applied by sailors to a crewman who had
died – for example, he “slipped his cable.” A vessel that slipped
its cable was also said to “cut and run.” And even today, the
phrase “cut and run” describes someone who makes a hasty
departure.

of LHPYC Daniel J. O’Keefe • Fine Art

This month the Gallery at Light House Point Yacht Club is featuring the NY Bellport Horizontalists. The original Bellport
Horizontalists are Daniel J. O’Keefe, John Perreault, and David Adams. The three artists are represented at the LHPYC Art
Gallery. Together the artists shared studio space in Gallery125 during the winter months between 2012 and 2014. While the
three artists made their art, David Adams noticed that even though the three artists made their art differently: O’Keefe
working on a table while layering and scraping Venetian plaster mixed with color paste onto aluminum, David using oil
paint poured from a can with a small hole in the middle to release his material, thus creating a unique spinning technique
from different heights onto paper, found beach wood and re-purposed materials and John using an over layered dripping
technique from above onto paper placed on the floor, creating unique runs and splatters, they all worked horizontally.

That’s how and where “The Bellport Horizontalists” originated.

During the winter months the artists would open their studios to visitors to walk
in and view the artists making art and engage in debate. One afternoon the
artists decided to set a weekend aside to host a children visit. As artists we
realized we were in the unique position to have local children visit an actual
working studio and interact with the artists as the children made art. The
pleasure of spending time with the children while they used their imagination
was more beneficial to the artists as we could see the freedom and enjoyment
they felt. We would go on to host more events like that until the space was no
longer available to us.

Over the years other artists living and migrating to the area would join “The
Bellport Horizontalists”, adding their methodologies to the group’s rich art
making.

This art work, painted by the original three Horizontalistsis, is the only one that they produced together.

The Art Gallery at LHPYC is currently featuring a number of gallery artists and all of their
art is for sale. Please contact me or the front desk for inquiries about the art.

COMMODORE’S CORNER

It gives me great pleasure to pick Gary & Amy Nenner as our first Yacht of the Month review.

These folks are a great and loyal asset to our cruise group.
Amy has a fast growing reputation for her culinary skills and making great eats for all on our trips.

YACHT
of the

Featured boat: Mon Ami owned by Gary and Amy Nenner

Mon Ami is a 49’ Grand Banks Eastbay, built in 2002.
Grand Banks has been building classic yachts since 1956
and are known for their two vessel genres: Cruising
Trawlers and Downeast Express Cruisers (The Eastbay).

We purchased our first Grand Banks (a 1990 Motor Yacht
Trawler) in 1998. Living in New England at the time, she
was the perfect coastal cruiser: solid, spacious, steady, slow,
and stabilized. She came to us with the name “Mon Ami”
which we took as an omen and have kept that name for all
of our future vessels. Upon moving to Florida fulltime in
2016, we struggled to find the perfect boat for our new
lifestyle and bought and sold 3 boats within our first 2 years
here.

Knowing that our lifestyle would never be as full time
“live-aboards”, we wanted a perfect couples boat of great
quality, a low profile, and entertaining space to share great
times with friends. We realized that the Grand Banks was
still our perfect vessel and had our “new” Downeast model
Eastbay christened “Mon Ami” at the Lighthouse Point
Yacht Club in July 2019. Since then, she has welcomed our
cruising club friends sharing dinners, drinks and socializing
on each adventure we have shared with our LHPYC family.

As soon as we can resume a more normal cruising lifestyle
with less “distancing”, we look forward to having everyone
again aboard the Mon Ami for our cruising club get
togethers.

Hope to see you aboard soon.
