commissioners are the final “big decision

community wide topics. They are the body that
directs the City Administration on the will of

most important for our future. You need to

Lighthouse Point
City Commission 2022 Election
Campaign Information
Did you know Lighthouse Point’s City Commission elections are on March 8, 2022?
As your neighborhood Yacht Club, we want to make sure that not only our members but fellow city residents have the
information they need as voting day approaches.
Who governs Lighthouse Point?
According to LighthousePoint.com, the City of Lighthouse Point is governed by a Mayor/Commission form of government
whose essential components are an elected chief executive, known as the Mayor, and an elected legislative body, known as
the City Commission.
Three out of five commission seats are up for re-election on March 8th. Lighthouse Point Yacht Club has extended an
opportunity in our newsletter for all candidates to inform voters of their platforms and ideas for the city.
What are the legislative powers of the City Commissioners?
According to Lighthousepoint.com, all legislative powers of the City are exclusively vested in and exercised by the City
Commission in accordance with the powers provided under state law. Commissioners are held accountable by the electorate
(YOU) for their actions and may not delegate their power to any other City board or committee.
In the state of Florida, City Commissioners are held responsible for but not limited to city buildings, fire protection, parks,
cultural facilities, city ordinances, development, residential and commercial zoning regulation, landscaping and building codes,
city environmental issues, aquifer storage, waste and sewage collection, taxes, civil service systems and boards, roads,
infrastructure, rules, regulation, operation of businesses in a city, and more.
If you are interested in learning more about the duties and powers given by the state of Florida to City Commissioners, please
reference http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Welcome/index.cfm
How long can a candidate be Commissioner for?
A commissioner’s term is for four years and is limited to twelve consecutive years of service. When seats are up for re-election,
candidates must choose which seat they are running for. As you read through their profiles, take note as to who is running for
what seat. Once votes have been casted, the most given to a candidate for a specific seat will win the election for that seat.
For this election, three candidates are running for seat one: Patty Petrone, Everett Marshall, and Brien Costigan. For seat
number two: Troy Ganter and Michael Long (incumbent). For seat number 3: Abby Stafford and Jason Joffe (incumbent). As a
resident you vote for candidates in all three seats.
Why should you care?
City Commissioners affect you, your family, and your biggest asset, your home through their powers and duties. However, they
are elected officials by you, the residents. That’s why we wanted to give you, your city commission candidate’s profiles to help
you find the candidate that most aligns with your goals.
How to Vote?
The City of Lighthouse Point offers two voting methods for its municipal elections: absentee ballot by mail or vote in person.
For the March elections we encourage all residents to visit https://www.lighthousepoint.com/218/Elections to learn how to
register, where to go, and how to request your ballots. The website provides information as to what you will need in order to
vote as well as polling and precinct maps.
Disclaimer: Each candidate has submitted their profile to Lighthouse Point Yacht Club. Lighthouse Point Yacht Club has not changed or
edited any of the profiles. Each candidate has an equal opportunity to participate in this publication. Each candidate has authorized us to
spread their message in this publication. All information regarding Lighthouse Point local government was received from
www.lighthousepoint.com and Florida’s legislative website.

Lighthouse Point | City Commission Candidates 2022 Patty Petrone
City Commissioner Seat #1
I’m Patty Petrone, running for Commissioner in Seat 1, and have been a proud
resident of LHP since I was 8 years old. My childhood was spent cruising the
canals, playing in the parks and learning tennis at the Yacht Club where my
late parents, Bill & Jean Jackson had been members for decades. I look
forward to the redevelopment of the yacht club which is an important part of
the fabric of LHP. Much work still needs to be done but my skills can help in
smoothly moving the project forward.
My parents taught me the value of hard work and of always giving back to the
community. I currently serve on the LHP Marine Advisory Board and volun-
teer to runthe annual nautical flea market raising almost $400,000 for the city.
As the former VP and co-owner of Jackson Marine, I bring a wealth of knowl-
edge about protecting our waterways and property values. I currently own
and operate the Red Fox Diner commonly known as the Cheers of LHP. My
financial and management skills as a successful business owner make me
uniquely qualified to implement sound financial policy on the city commission.
I’m honored to have the endorsement of 4 former Mayors of Lighthouse Point
– and I am working every day to earn the support of all the voters in our city!

Lighthouse Point | City Commission Candidates 2022
11
Jason Joffe Lighthouse Point | City Commission Candidates
City Commissioner Seat #3 2022
Jason Joffe was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale and moved to Lighthouse Point in 2010 when his
wife was 6 months pregnant in order to raise their family in our City. A second daughter followed two
years later. Jason and his wife Kate found Lighthouse Point to be the perfect community to raise their
girls, now ages 9 and 11. From the start, Jason and his family were involved in the community, participat-
ing in City sports, local clubs/organizations, and all things our great city has to offer. Jason and Kate
experienced first-hand the compassion and love Lighthouse Point residents have for each other when
Kate’s health created numerous challenges for the Joffe family to overcome, including requiring Kate to
temporarily relocate to Houston for treatment. Above all, Jason and his wife believe this community
spirit is what makes Lighthouse Point the special place it is.
Jason graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and attended the University of Florida, where he
graduated with a business degree, majoring in finance and minoring in economics. He then attended
law school at Nova Southeastern University on a full academic scholarship. Upon graduating at the top
of his law school class, he clerked for a Florida State Court Appellate Judge. A er completing his
clerkship, Jason entered private practice and has been with the international law firm of Squire Patton
Boggs (US) LLP for the last 16 years. Jason’s practice focuses on litigation at the highest levels. Jason
represents all sorts of businesses, from Fortune 200 companies to small businesses, in a variety of
disputes.
Jason was first elected to the Lighthouse Point City Commission in 2015. With a desire to build on the
traditions of Lighthouse Point and improve our great City, Jason decided to bring his legal mind,
financial background, and business approach to our government. Jason has a proven track record on a
variety of important issues. Jason championed the implementation of term limits for all Lighthouse Point
elected officials, which was overwhelmingly approved by the voters of Lighthouse Point. Government
transparency and resident involvement are also very important to Jason, which is why he pushed hard
for video recording and streaming of Lighthouse Point City Commission meetings. Government should
be inclusive and efforts to maximize resident involvement should be taken. Jason also fully endorsed
and advocated for the City's current general obligation bond, which is allowing the City to invest in
public safety, our parks, and critical infrastructure. And while Jason fully endorses investment in our
City, he is also laser focused on making sure those projects are completed efficiently and within budget.
Government should always work like that!
Jason is seeking re-election because there is more work to do and more he wants to accomplish. Upon
successful completion of the current City projects, he wants to focus on basic infrastructure, specifically
paving and repairing our aging City bridges. In Jason's view, this is best accomplished with fiscally
prudent use of state and federal funds in order minimize any tax burden on our residents. Jason
believes investment in our building department is needed in order to support the building renaissance
in Lighthouse Point. As development continues, a new focus on the Federal Highway corridor will also
be critical. Jason also wants to continue the tradition of supporting our first responders by providing
them with the resources they need and deserve.

Lighthouse Point | City Commission Candidates 2022 Abby Stafford
City Commissioner Seat #3
Abby Stafford is a second-generation Floridian and lifelong Broward County resident, who
has called Lighthouse Point home for over a decade.

cial tire business which spans 3 generations. Before working at Tiresoles, Abby spent 6
years in public accounting at Deloitte Tax LLP.
To this day, Abby helps individuals and families with their personal finances as a financial
coach, helping develop a plan to pay off debt, meet strategic money goals, and build
wealth. Abby also volunteers with her church to assist in the areas of benevolence and
financial counseling.
Abby is excited to bring her unique skillset and strengths to the Lighthouse Point city
commission and make a great city even better. Her priorities include:

We love our LHP Police & Fire Departments! To show our appreciation, we now extend an honorary membership to any

While Under Construction Activities
I am getting many questions about what type of activities we will have available during construction before the temporary
clubhouse (the Tennis Center Bistro) is built. As the Social Committee liaison, I am happy to share some the ideas the
committee has come up with: BBQ / Smoked Meat Competition, Food Truck & Booze Truck Extravaganza, Kids Trash Fish
Tournament, Vegas Style Pool Party, Casino Night, Lake Boca Raft Up, Golf Cart Parade, Dock Hop, Wine Around the World, Brews
& Tunes, Golf Tournament (see below), and many more to come!

Most of you likely know the story behind the Walking with Anthony organization. If you don’t, I encourage you to visit
their website at walkingwithanthony.org. We are extremely proud to be one of many sponsors for their upcoming Charity

of LHPYC This month I reflect on the gallery and what the vision is
moving forward. Four years ago, Terry Paterson
Daniel J. O’Keefe • Fine Art reached out to me through a mutual acquaintance. He
516-383-4000 • danieljokeefe.com had a vision of having an art gallery at LHPYC. Terry
shared his plans and what he hoped to achieve.
Culturally and community-minded, Terry expressed his
desire that not only would the Club members enjoy the
art gallery, so would the Lighthouse Point community
and those attending the many unique functions at the
Club. His vision soon became my vision.
The Art Gallery can be found in the center hallway of
the Club.Easily accessible, the art is periodically rotated
and changed, making room for new arrivals. All the art
is original unless otherwise specified, and the art is for
sale.
Each month I research an artist being represented in the gallery. The article I write is published in 'The Point" for all of you to
enjoy. The article is a unique opportunity to research the artist's life and inspiration behind the art pieces. In addition, the
research almost always provides a picture of the artist's purpose for becoming an artist. Gracing the halls of the gallery over
the past three and a half years have been works by Samuel Elmer, Don Laser, Fernando de Jesus Oliveira, David Adams, R.J
Boyle, Jill Sneidman's, Salvador Dali', Fernando de Jesus Oliverira, Daniel J. O'Keefe, Zuber, Matthew Troyan, Ray Gross,
Arthur Pinajian, Charles Fazzino, AntraniqGharibian, Janet D'Addario, Thomas Hoffman, John Perrault, Mark Wagner, and
Steve Heart, to name a few.
I plan to continue featuring artists and their works for the Art Gallery of LHPYC as the Club moves beyond the construction
phase. Finally, I share the member's anticipation and excitement for the new Lighthouse Point Yacht Club. Enjoy some
pictures of just a few of the beautiful pieces we have had at the Club.
For information about acquiring the art in the Art Gallery of the LHPYC, please contact Daniel J. O’Keefe at 516-383-4000 or

Employee I grew up on a lake in Waterford, Connecticut, where my
parents and sister had an adamant time trying to get me
Spotlight out. Whether it was fishing, swimming, or just plain
messing around, I knew I was meant to be in the water
and that it would take me to my lifelong career. I never
took swimming lessons. I was always just comfortable
being in the water.
Harry Traystman When I turned twelve, my aunt came to me and asked if I
would help her out with the Special Olympics as a
Unified Partner. At this point in my life, I was fascinated
with Basketball. I would go to camps every summer and
play in the Pre-Teen league during the winter. I wanted to be the next Michael Jordan.
But once high school started, I learned that this would not be my future, and I was cut
from tryouts.
My father told me, “I don’t care what you do, but you’re going to do a sport in high
school, and I think you should swim.” Devastated about being cut from the basketball
team and horrified about wearing a speedo to practice and at meets. I ended up
qualifying for the State Championships and making the Varsity team.
I won 2 state titles and was named an All-American as a senior. Despite being offered
two scholarships, I decided to swim for a program in Fort Pierce, Florida, Indian River.
The program had produced some of the greatest coaches and swimmers in the sport.
However, when I first arrived on campus, they didn’t have a laundry facility or a
cafeteria. It was overwhelming, and not to mention that I walked on to this program
without a scholarship. But just like I learned from a young age, anything worth doing
isn’t easy. So, I put my head down and went to work. I ended the season on a full
scholarship and was a 5x national champion and an 8x All-American. The coaches that
were there at the time would be the Head Coach of Florida State, Auburn, and the assistant coach of Arizona State with Bob Bowman
(Michael Phelps’s coach).
After my time with Indian River, I transferred to a college in Charlotte, North Carolina, Queens University of Charlotte. The most
decorated coach in the history of USA swimming, David Marsh, was coaching. I ended my college career with 8x national
championships and 21x All-American honors. Despite my accomplishments, nothing would compare to what I learned from having
these coaches in my life. When I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to take the next step of my journey and become a coach. I
have been a head coach and program director for six years and have helped many kids qualify for National, Sectional, and State
meets. I am very proud to say I have helped over 20 kids reach the college swimming level, with twelve of them receiving
scholarships to their respected programs.
I am so excited to start the next step of my journey with this great community and help grow the aquatics program into what I know
it can be! I’m blessed that you all have chosen me to be a part of our Club and community! Since we are in full swing in the aquatics
department, I am offering Private Lessons! I offer private one on one lessons as well as group lessons for 2-4 people. So whether you
would like to learn how to swim or want to fine-tune your skills, talk to me! As your LHPYC swim coach, I am available to talk

In 2002, Cristal Champagne received the near-impossible 100-point score from
Wine & Spirits Magazine. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay.
As Champagne ages it gets more golden in color, Cristal is aged over 6 years. It
is a dry Champagne from France and the taste on the palate is flavors of honey,
orange peel, raspberry, white cherry, apple, toast, hazelnut, and white

CRUISE GROUP
I would like to introduce Steve and Donna Savage and their yacht ‘Reel Savage” as the
February 2022 Yacht of the Month - Cruise Group Chair, Michael Holmes
YACHT
of the
“Reel Savage”
We strongly believe in owing a yacht with a pedigree. We’ve
owned two Grand Banks, a 42’ and a 49’. However, we love to
Fish & Dive, so we, specifically, sought the Bertram Brand. The
older Bertram’s are heavy well-built yachts that are known for
their excellent seakeeping ability. We’ve owned three, a 38’, 43’
and now, “REEL SAVAGE” our 54’.
We saw this 54’ in Destin, Florida and knew we had to have her.
Donna and I brought her across the Gulf and across the State to
South Florida. It was quite the journey. She’s a fine yacht that
handles rough seas with style and ease. She’s comfortable to
spend time aboard, even our cat, Billy, enjoys spending time
aboard. (You may spot him around the club from time to time).
She’s equipped with A/C, a large salon, entertainment center &
full galley. Below you’ll find a laundry center with a full-sized
washer & dryer, 3 large staterooms & 3 heads. Designed to handle
big seas & fishing, she’s powered by freshly rebuilt twin 900
horsepower (each) 12V92 Detroit Diesels and two Onan
generators.Well-equipped for fishing with a fighting chair, out
riggers, bait & tackle center, rod cases & lower cockpit controls.
Her recently refinished & roomy cockpit allows plenty of room to
maneuver when catching a large fish. On the flybridge you’ll find
the helm station, 3 helm seats, large lounge area & table forward.
Her electronics include radar, auto pilot, chart plotter, radio etc.
The normal electronics you need to plan any trip.
She’s an easy yacht for the two of us to handle. We’ve been
boating for many years, although, she doesn’t have a bow or stern
thruster, she’s easy to handle and dock. We’ve already enjoyed 1
trip to the Abaco’s with the Cruise Group and we’re looking
forward to many more.
Tight lines…Steve & Donna Savage. Oh, and Billy, too.
Travel Safe,
LHPYC Cruise Group and Chair Michael Holmes

New Member Matthew and Amy are East Coast meets West Coast.
Matthew grew up in Virginia Beach, VA, went to
Spotlight college at East Carolina University and later moved
out to California. Amy grew up in Newport Beach,
Matthew and Amy Dragas CA, went to Chapman University and met Matthew
a few short years later. Matthew and Amy matched
on Tinder and agreed on their first dinner date in
Huntington Beach California. Shortly after the two
were engaged and have been together 4 years. They
married in August 2020. Matthew did not like living
in California and Amy could never survive the frigid
winters in Virginia Beach. Florida was the
compromise. They bought their home in Lighthouse
Point in May 2021 and have enjoyed every moment
since the move.
Matthew owns restaurants and Amy keeps busy
taking care of their 3 dogs as well as preparing for
their first child due this April 2022. When not
working on home renovations, they enjoy fishing as
often as possible on Matthews Catamaran, golfing,
skiing and attending NFL games (Go Ravens!).
Joining the Yacht Club was one of the first things
they did upon moving to Lighthouse Point and it
always gives them something to look forward to
after a busy week.
They look forward to attending more Yacht Club
events and becoming familiar faces around the club.

This month we will be doing an extra special spotlight for an Member
extra special issue of The Point Magazine.Alvin Gregory Ross
was born on December 29th, 1921 and spent his 100th birthday Spotlight
here at the Club. He is not only a son, husband, father, but also
an American Patriot!
He was born in Cleveland Ohio where he graduated high Alvin Gregory Ross
school and played varsity football. He was an accountant in
training for Westinghouse prior to being draft for World War
II. Heentered the service in the year of 1941. He began his
training with army rangers at Fort Brag which included target
practice for six hours a day. He quickly became a Sargent and
was awarded the Expert Marksman Badge with Carbine Bar,
Machine Gun Bar, Rifle Bar, and Submachine Gun Bar.
He was deployed to the 12th armored reconnaissance division.
He and his small group were used as pinpointers where they
were given a map and their mission was to find enemy
positions. They would then report the positions to their
commanders. Sergeant Ross and his team would find
themselves in enemy territory more often than not. The intense
push of the war was from December of 1944 to May of 1945. He
fought in four different countries and led a group across the
Rhine where he fought in Germany. He was awarded a Silver
Star for capturing an entire town with only two other
soldiers. In his time fighting the war he
earned 72 points, a Silver Star, a Bronze
Star, and a Purple Heart to add to his
Marksman Badge.
After the conflict was over, he was still
enlisted and formed a band that played
throughout Europe. They were known
as the 21 Clubbers where he was the
bandleader and singer. In 1949 he
returned home and attended a ball at the
Aragon Ballroom in Cleveland, OH.
Where he would soon meet the love of
his life and mother to his
daughter,Connie. Sergeant Ross had
been a beautiful ballroom dance from a
very young age and quite literally swept
Connie off her feet. They settled done in
Cleveland Ohio and raised their only
daughter Cindy. Connie and Sergeant
Ross were married for seventy years!
He was a classic entrepreneur the first to
introduce the tower crane to the USA
through Ross Crane Corp. He then was
the first to introduce the self-propelled
aerial man lifts through Ross
Equipment. He and his daughter Cindy
were featured on 20/20 with Barbara
Walters, Fortune Magazine, The Wall
Street Journal, and even Good Housekeeping! Sergeant Ross enjoys being on the water as he has owned a boat since 1960. His
latest vesselis a 1951 53’ Burger Flush Deck Motor Yacht named “Cindy” and is currently docked in Cleveland. He explains his
secret to perfect health at 100 to a glass of red wine every night and a cup of black coffee in the morning. You can find Sergeant
Ross listening to his favorite music, watching the boats go by, or coming to the club with his children Cindy and Larry Trotter.
He is always open for a boat ride!
