18 FITNESS & YOUTH Fitness Jeremy Marten Fitness & Youth Director This may be an unpopular opinion, but I love the summer months in Florida! Why, you might ask? Let me share with you. I love that there is less traffic on the roads to and from work, I love that I can go to most restaurants without a reservation again, I love that most weekends are great for boating or the beach, I love the long days of sunshine, and finally, I love hearing about all of your summer vacation travels. Most people speak unfavorably about the summer heat in Florida, but I embrace it and don’t complain. Have you been inside our ice-cold gym? It feels great! TENNIS Can you believe it? We are halfway through the summer, and things are still rocking on the courts. Last weekend, we had our quarterly Dinks & Drinks pickleball social. Like in the past, there were two groups playing on all three courts, accompanied by amazing food and drink. It was so much fun! Be on the lookout for our next pickleball social. We have finally worked out the kinks and will be unveiling our new court and program reservation system this month. Through the new LHPYC Mobile App, you’ll not only be able to book a court but also register for all your favorite programs and clinics with just a click. This will allow us to better manage class sizes and waitlists. We will send out notifications through email and the tennis WhatsApp when it is fully operational and the PlayByCourt reservation system is turned off. You may have seen some new faces on the courts recently helping teach the classes. I am in the process of adding a new pro to help with the demand for the additional classes that will be available in August. Once the new hire is made, we’ll have a Meet and Greet and unveil the new classes they will run. Exciting times are coming up for sure! In the meantime, let's keep the Cardio, Tiki, and Feeding Frenzy sessions cranking. Last but not least, if you have any questions or would like to schedule lessons or events, please don’t hesitate to let Jim know. We are here to make your LHPYC experience the best. See you on the courts! Jim Scott, Tennis Director 20

22 chef’s CORNER Fun in the sun is always better with delicious food involved. I want to start by thanking all of you for your efforts and contributions toward the Favorite Chef competition, which supports the James Beard Foundation. A heartfelt thank you to our top contributors: Scott Creighton & Julia Jendruzcek, Peter & Claire Bray, James Clooney, Grant & Krista Arklie, our Tennis Ladies, and the Patersons. Truthfully, it was a club-wide effort, and I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who took the time and resources to vote. At the time of writing this, I was unsure if I won, but I am currently in 1st place. I will be sure to send out a club-wide alert when the results are ready. Being mid-season and mid-year means it is time to shake up our beloved Shipwrecked Menu. Make sure to stop by this month to savor some of our newest menu additions. We've added traditional favorites such as hickory smoked pork spareribs, surf & turf, and conch fritters. Our culinary team has also introduced some easy-to-enjoy eats for the summer heat, including Old Bay seasoned peel-eat shrimp, a Mediterranean mezze plate, and addicting edamame topped with hemp seeds. Do you have parties happening this month or throughout the summer? Don’t forget that your club offers catering for small gatherings, whether on the water or at your home. We have the "Cruise and Go" menu, which is accessible via the website, mobile app, or at the club the next time you stop by. FOOD & BEVERAGE As we dive into the heart of summer, our club pulses with excitement and energy, offering a myriad of experiences to make this season unforgettable for our members. 23 of LHPYC Daniel J. O’Keefe • Fine Art 516-383-4000 • danieljokeefe.com The Art Gallery of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club is featuring one of the most iconic artworks associated with the Fourth of July in America, "Declaration of Independence", by John Trumbull for the July 2024 issue of THE POINT magazine. John Trumbull is best known for his historical paintings during the American Revolutionary War era. He was most notable for his depictions of key moments in American history, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence and surrender at Saratoga. His painting “Declaration of Independence” was perhaps, the most important painting of our country’s founding. The painting depicts the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress on June 28,1776. The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, is celebrated in the United States to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This declaration declared the 13 American colonies independent from British rule and formed the United States of America. It is a day to celebrate American independence, freedom, and the values of democracy that the country was founded upon. The painting is significant because it portrays the key figures involved in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, capturing the moment when the document was presented for approval. Many of the individuals depicted in the painting, such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin, are well-known figures in American history. Trumbull's painting is considered iconic because it visually represents the historical event that the Fourth of July commemorates—the formal declaration of independence by the American colonies from British rule. It serves as a powerful reminder of the ideals of freedom, democracy, and self-governance that the United States was founded upon. For over two hundred and forty seven years America has been a Republic, a country represented by it’s citizens. When asked, Benjamin Franklin stated, “It’s a Republic as long as it can be kept!” Please feel free to contact Daniel J. O’Keefe at 516-383-4000 or email me at [email protected]
24 Julia Robinson Membership & Communications Director The sun is shining, and the sunscreen is flowing as we get into the middle of Florida’s summer. Summer equals bathing suits, and we all love a good tan. However, we do ask that bathing suit bottoms on the pool deck provide full coverage as cheeky bikini bottoms are not permitted at the pool. We hope you have enjoyed Sunday Funday’s return to the club over the summer months. If you haven’t attended one yet, make sure to do so before the summer ends. Did you know that we received a brand new thriller slide for the pool? Make sure to come on down and take it for a spin on Sunday while enjoying ALL DAY HAPPY HOUR! Your membership department is thrilled to announce the launch of our new LHPYC Mobile App! The app is available on both the Google Play and Apple App Store, so run over there and start downloading. The links to download are available on page 9 of the newsletter, or you can search ‘LHPYC’ in your app store! Your login for the app will be the same as your online member portal for the club’s website. Don’t have it or forgot your password? Email me, and I will send you all the details. The app will provide access to your statement, calendar, newsletter, roster, reciprocity information, menus, travel, clinic scheduling, court booking, and so much more. If you are technically challenged, don’t let that hold you back. Once you log into the app, it is very easy to navigate, and I have your back. If you need assistance downloading, logging in, or learning to navigate, please email me. We can set up an appointment or schedule a time for a workshop to get you acclimated. Getting down to some membership business, I would like to remind our members that we require your guests visiting the MEMBERSHIP property to be accompanied by a member unless approved by my office. Additionally, guests may only visit the club twice per month unless a guest card has been issued. If you have a guest card request or any questions, I am available. Your Travel Committee is excited to announce some preliminary details for our 2025 Father’s Day trip to Cabo San Lucas, where we will be staying at the all-inclusive Grand Fiesta Americana! We are extending the invite not only to all of you but also to your family and friends. It is never too early to shop for a present for dad, and nothing can top a trip filled with unlimited cold beer, fishing, golfing, and the beaches of Cabo! Finally, if you have any neighbors, friends, or family who are still on the fence about joining, the State of Florida just made the decision easy for them. The whole month of July is Freedom Summer Savings month, which means no state taxes will be charged for membership sign-up costs! What a way to get us all through the hump of the summer and into the next season of the year. As always, I am here for any questions or assistance, so don’t hesitate to contact me!
