Welcome Head Swim Coach Dana Nolan

“I’m so excited to join the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club for the 2019 swim season. I look forward to
working with your children, building the swim program, and creating fun events at the pool for the
whole family to enjoy. I have been involved in swimming for most of my life, becoming a lifeguard
and swim instructor at 15 years old and eventually becoming a Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR
instructor. I swam competitively throughout college at The State University of New York at Potsdam
and earned degrees in music performance, psychology, and a minor in wilderness education. I
continued my education at The State University of New York at New Paltz where I earned my degree
in elementary education. When I moved to Florida, I spent a year in Tampa working for Hillsborough

THE TRAVELING PLATE – A CULINARY EXPERIENCE BY ARC BROWARD

Thanks to those who came out to Fort Lauderdale Country
Club earlier this month to support one of our favorite local
charities, ARC Broward Culinary. It was a beautiful evening
out on the golf course as we
wined and dined while
supporting ARC Culinary
students receiving scholarships
into the program. See below for
exciting future Traveling Plate
dates coming up!

TASTE OF LIGHTHOUSE POINT

It was another successful Taste of Lighthouse Point on January 15th here at the Club. We were honored to be the venue for
another year for this incredible community event. The local restaurants brought a new level of energy and fun with their creative
specialties. This major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Pompano Beach raised money for their charitable giving and
scholarships for Pompano Beach high schools. At this present time, Rotary Pompano Beach sponsors 9 students who are
attending UM, FSU, and UF.

Marina is an interesting ecosystem and with polarized
glasses and a little patience there are amazing things to
see, especially at low tide. We have a 30 lbs. or bigger
grouper that travels the length of D-dock. I literally see
him every day. One day a few years ago I caught sight
of a green seahorse at least 5 inches tall. The grouper
came flying out from under the dock, swallowed him,
and promptly spit him out. The little guy just kept on
swimming. So, if you’re coming down to do a little
sight-seeing of our amazing ecosystem, bring a few
sliced hotdogs. It brings them out in schools!

A quick reminder to our slip holders and pet owners:
Please try and rotate the area your dogs do their busi-
ness. It really saves the grass. We have limited parking
on both sides of the marina; if you have multiple cars,
please spread them out so everybody has a chance to get
at least one car close to the Marina. Lastly, if you see
crew or vendors driving fast down the street or on the
property, please let me know ASAP. Stay safe out there
and enjoy this weather.

Actually, we use our complex lexicon simply to make
communication on a boat easier, and safer. And for centuries
before us, sailors have always communicated in their own way

“A Slick Idea”

Before the days of petroleum-based grease and oil, WD-40 and silicone, early sailors
relied on another source of lubrication for a sailing ship’s many moving parts -- namely,
grease and fat from the ship’s galley. In those days (as now) this grease and fat was the
natural byproduct of cooking meat. The resulting residue, called “slush” in those days,
was saved and used to ease the friction in moving parts and to preserve metal parts of
the ship and rigging from the corrosive effects of the marine environment.

This slush was a valuable commodity on board, as the excess was stored and sold at the
ship’s ports of call, where it was used as an ingredient in soap and candles. The proceeds
were placed in a fund used to purchase miscellaneous luxuries for the crew, like books,
musical instruments or supplies to make clothing. But today, most people don’t realize
the nautical origin of the term “slush fund.” Now the term carries a negative
connotation, describing a fund used for inappropriate or illegal purposes — perhaps
used to “grease the palms” of corrupt individuals.
