Sandy & Sheldon are from Montréal Canada where they now
live six months of the year. The remainder of their time is
spent between Fort Lauderdale and living on their boat
LivinLife. After Sheldon retired Almost two years ago, they
decided to spend more time down south doing what they
love most, boating, tennis and playing golf. They were
introduced to LHPYC through friends and quickly fell in love
with all the club had to offer. So much so, they spent 3.5
months this year in the marina where lifelong friendships
were made and many fun boating adventures were had.
Being involved with the clubs Cruise Group enhanced their
joy of boating and has provided some fantastic opportunities
with the group. Since purchasing their Azimut 50 3 years ago,
they have spent time traveling throughout the Bahamas, the
Keys and many other parts of beautiful south Florida
enjoying the dock life and all the beauty and peace that goes
along with boating. While in Florida, Sandy spends some of
her time volunteering with the new members committee and
the yacht shop selling great club merchandise. Sheldon is the

The Art Gallery Of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club is celebrating

“Flag Day”on June 14th for The Point’s June 2021 issue.

According to historical records, the Continental Congress

approved the design of a national flag on June 14, 1777.

However, it wasn’t until 1916 when President Woodrow Wilson

issued a presidential proclamationthat established a national

Flag Day on June 14. Americans have commemorated the

adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways by displaying

the flag in front of their homes, parades and other patriotic

observances. Prior to 1916, many localities and a few states had

of LHPYC been celebrating the date for years. Congressional legislation
designatedthis date as, the national Flag Day and was signed
into law by President Harry Truman in 1949. The legislation also

Daniel J. O’Keefe • Fine Art called upon the president to issue a Flag Day proclamation
516-383-4000 • danieljokeefe.com every year.

In 1776, history has it that George Washington commissioned

Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross to create a flag for the new nation. Scholars, however, credit the flag’s design to Francis Hopkinson, who

also designed the Great Seal and first coin of the United States. It was not until Ross’s grandson William Canby held an 1870 press

conference to recount the story that the American public learned of her possible role. Even so, Ross most likely met George Washington, had

a hand in making and sewing that flag. Rosssewed and repaired many early American Flags along with assisting in the Revolutionary

War’s effort of repairing tents and uniforms in her family’s Philadelphia Upholstery shop.

On June 14,1777, the Second Continental Congress took a break from writing the Articles of Confederation and passed a resolution stating
that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternating red and white,” and that “the union be 13 white stars in a blue field, representing
a new constellation.” To date there have been twenty seven official versions of the flag, but the arrangement of the stars varied according to
the flag-maker’s preferences until 1912 when President Taft standardized the then new flag’s forty-eight stars into six rows of eight. The
forty-nine star flag (1959-1960), as well as the fifty-star flag, also have standardized star patterns. The current version of the flag dates to July
4, 1960, after Hawaii became the fiftieth state on August 21, 1959.

The American Flag has proudly flown in both peacetime and war-time. We honor our fallen heroes with the Stars and Stripes and also
celebrate holidays, graduations and patriotic events and much more. Our country has seen a new invisible war this past year and a half that
ravaged our citizens. As we have seen in our country and around the world before, we are now witnessing its end.

The Art Gallery at Light House Point is currently featuring a number of Gallery artists. All the art is for sale.
For information about the art please contact Daniel J. O’Keefe at 516-383-4000 or Diane at the front desk.

It has been a pleasure to meet most of you here at the
club. I’m honored to be given the chance to share a little
bit about myself. I was born and raised in Connecticut.
You can tell by the sunburn I have going on most of the
time :)
I absolutely love music. I’ve been playing the
drums since I was 11. I am a proud aunt of 2
amazing boys, Connor and Caleb. You can also
find me outside in my garden playing in the dirt.
My partner and I love to grow and cook fresh
food. As you can tell, I’m extremely passionate
about food and am usually the mad scientist in
the kitchen. I believe that food is good for the soul
and can be incredibly healing. I also feed my soul
by practicing meditation, hot yoga and lots of
exercise. I find that a lot of mindfulness comes to
me in a kitchen. I love to get lost in a dish and am
very interested in the science, nutrition and art of food. I enjoy making
vegan entrees for our members and am usually at farmers market every
weekend. When I’m not eating, thinking or dreaming about food, my
partner and I love to spend time with our two dogs, Cash and Penny and
our cats, Mama and Mila. So if you’re ever looking for me, you can most
likely find me at a farmers market, a yoga studio, behind a drum set, or right
here at the club.

COMMODORE’S CORNER

I would like to present an adventurous couple, cruising up the East coast very soon:
Bruce Phillips and Jonalyn Sullivan - Commodore, Peter Hanssen

YACHT
of the

Wanderlust is a Prestige 550 Flybridge yacht built in France in 2016.
Prestige yachts are the jewel of French marine engineering building
quality and beauty. The 58 ½ foot yacht lives like a 70 footer. It has
3 staterooms, 2 heads, crew quarters and lots of separate living
spaces or places to just hang out (or work in our case).

Bruce purchased the boat in June 2020, after having been cooped
up in a 700 square foot apartment in Atlanta, GA during COVID.
Jonalyn was in Newburyport MA riding out the pandemic. Bruce
had had enough! He got into his car, drove to Ft. Lauderdale and,
after looking at boats he decided it was time to actually step onto
one. A 4-day trip to south Florida turned into 8 weeks. Bruce came
away buying the Prestige and moving to Florida. It took a few
months, but he finally convinced Jonalyn to come down and she
loved it. We began making Wanderlust memories with a marriage
proposal on the flybridge catered by the amazing staff at the
clubhouse.

We are both CPA’s. We both work from the boat, as many of you
have seen us on our laptops day and night. We love what we do,
are forward thinking and lucky to be able to live and work
anywhere. We love to travel - hence “Wanderlust”. 58 Countries
and counting. Looking forward to when the world opens up again.
But this time with a boat.

Our boating experience started in Newburyport about 4 years ago.
While walking downtown we saw a sign for Freedom Boat Club.
Curious, we walked in. Being impulsive, and a few grand later, we
joined and took lessons learning how to operate the boats. These
were only 20-24 footers. Nothing like Wanderlust. But we think we
have done pretty well listening and learning from all of the
wonderful people around the Yacht Club.

We currently live and work on Wanderlust at the Yacht Club but
will still plan to spend our summers in Newburyport. Our current
plan is to keep the boat at the Charlestown Marina, smack in the
middle of Boston Harbor and right next to the USS Constitution,
through Hurricane Season. We will be back around Nov 1. If
anyone makes it to Boston (or Newport, Block Island, Nantucket, or
Maine), please look us up!
